As happened with Sigil 1, playing Doom Sigil 2 with your beautiful soundtrack, I felt the same emotions as the first Doom, 30 years ago. Thank you

Original soundfont is bad

@themisterdellou Жыл бұрын
@@MtPain27 the original soundfont always sounded terrible. I always turn off the soundtrack in doom 1&2 to play the same soundtrack in the background, but with normal quality. compare at least e1m8 in the game with regular e1m8. The soundtrack of Sigil 2 with a different soundfont is much better, I just don't understand why James uploads his tracks in compressed midi quality
@JamesPaddockMusic Жыл бұрын
@@themisterdellou These MIDI tracks (like all of my tracks written for Doom maps) were made with the default General MIDI Wavetable Synth in mind - this sound is still the standard in all PCs. That's generally the only way you CAN write midi compositions and guarantee a consistent sound across platforms. I tried writing with specific soundfonts in mind and found it pretty miserable. Applying a soundfont en masse to a carefully-written midi track basically destroys the intended mix and timbre of the original composition. I realised this myself a few years back and that's why I haven't gone through the (arguably very long-winded and laborious) process of finding soundfonts that **don't** make the original midis sound like a hive of angry bees in an echo chamber (or worse) before prepping them for upload to KZbin. Even finding soundfonts that are supposed to emulate the GM Wavetable Synth 1:1 is difficult, because they tend not to emulate it all that precisely. Now that I've hit upon a soundfont that works well to emulate the GM sound (thanks Doomkid!) I can finally present the tracks the way that I've always heard them, and that they are intended to **be** heard. Going forward, that's how I'm gonna be uploading all my MIDI works to this channel.
@Kolibri92 Жыл бұрын
Not a single other soundfont out there plays MIDI as clear as this, one of the reasons to love it. But your opinion and taste in other soundfonts is respected.
@GHHF66611 ай бұрын
@@JamesPaddockMusic I know exavtly what you are saying. A few years ago, I spent a lot of time trying to create a personal sf2 out of dozens of free and one payware soundfont (which I regretted buying as it sounded awful despite having great samples here and there). My main reference was the original Doom soundtrack and my old SC-55 card (replaced by a SC-88 module with the UM-One cable later). The same song can sound vastly different if samples or volumes between them are way off. And even if a sample sounded objectively better, it sometimes still failed to work for Doom or in combination with other samples... I do not know how many attempts I needed, but ended up with two sf2 in the end. One pretty close to original SC-55, and one still close in general, but with better quality samples and volumes, which are far less "aggressive" sounding. There are still some samples which I never got to fit exactly right with every song, but I still prefer it even over my SC-88 now, as it sounds a bit more alive and clearer. Your soundtrack is one of the best midi arrangements I have come across in quite some time, and I am happy you are writing them with the Roland samples in mind. Maybe its nostalgia, but the old Sound Canvas cards and modules will always have a special place in my heart and loading up my sf2 with your songs tells me that the time spent working on it was well worth it.
