Thanks again. Remembering my first view of the fortress at Mesocco and the Via Mala. I've been back and forth over that pass a few times. One of my favorites. And I learned today that the cantonal border between Ticino and Graubunden is not at the pass. I always assumed that it was as the south side is totally Italian.

The large structures near the summit I took to be water reservoirs however on looking at a map they are directly over the road tunnel so I am assuming these are ventilator shafts for the road tunnel?

Now I see why the RhB never joint up its railways. Railways tend not to use hairpins but like loops and spirals so the railway route would be far greater distance, round, over and through the mountains and valleys. There are so many levels with farmlands. The road followed was original for horse or horse drawn vehicles and the gradients are shallow to suit. Even the 'new' road can be seen twisting and turning round the valley. With snow on the mountains just above 2000m is this September/October?
