Hey Everyone! It looks as though there was a de-centering issue with my Tamron. Where there was some extra softness away from the center of the image, I discovered that the opposite side of the image was actually sharper. So, there's even less difference in resolution (assuming you have a well adjusted Tamron) than the video indicates. See the 17mm images in the review on my site: www.lightandmatter.org/2020/videos/lens-comparisons/sigma-14-24mm-f-2-8-vs-tamron-17-28mm-f-2-8-for-sony-e-mount-review-comparison/

@MatthewGore

@@cryptostroka Decentering is a fairly common problem with all lenses of every brand, really (some lenses are worse than others, I guess)... but not especially bad with this Tamron or Tamron lenses generally. Some lenses (Leica, for example) that are produced in small numbers don't exhibit these problems initially, but even they may develop over time. That said, it is pretty much a non-issue in real world use. Remember, I'm looking at these images at 100% magnification with a 42 megapixel camera... and the differences were still quite minor, generally. They may not be visible at all on a 24 megapixel camera. Still, if you're concerned about it, there are some tests that you can do to check for decentering... a Google search will turn them up.

@@cryptostroka It appears to be fairly common - leading to higher than usual return rates at Amazon, for example. After you buy a new lens, I would suggest to take it to someone who can examine (or learn how to yourself), so you can ask for exchange...

I shot this video on an A7RIII, and I've owned the Tamron for years, now. It's not as sharp as the Sigma in some places, but it's still very sharp. I did have an issue with decentering when I got it, but after having it adjusted, it's been great.

Thank you for producing and sharing this in-depth comparison between Sigma and Tamron. I actually invested in the Tamron lenses because of the balance of affordability, weight and quality including the same sharing of the same thread size for filters. This increased the convenience for travel photography. With the amazing Moment 10L bag, it completes my dream of having everything I need in one bag as my travel companion to take amazing great images to tell of stories, beauty and culture.

I own the Tamron 17-28. I'd like the 6L bag. It does go to only 17mm but seeing how casually and care free I can use it anywhere without having to worry about the front element is really a boon. plus it takes front filters, really light and compact. Should be great for vlogging.

I already watched all the videos on this topic...(including the German videos :) ) and then you uploaded your video! Thank you so much! I'm going for the Sigma. I also wasn't aware of the Moment Sling bags, finally, a bag to hold my lenses while I switch from the Tamron 28-75 to my future 14-24mm :). I would enjoy the 6L version. I'm looking to buy my first interchangeable lens camera and I'm struggling to pick out lenses to start out with. I'm buying the camera more for video, and a lot of the stuff I plan to work on will be interior stuff so I think the extra 3mm of the Sigma would benefit me greatly. But that Tamron seems like such a great bang for the buck lens with not much quality drop off except for the 3mm wide angle difference. Because of the great value in the Tamron, it makes sense to go with their 28-70 mid zoom lens, but if I go for the 3mm in the Sigma, I'm missing out on the 25-27mm range by going with Tamron instead of again going for the Sigma in this range as well.

Thanks for your review, Matthew, although I am still somewhat undecided between the two Sigma or Tamron wide-angle and standard-zoom lenses. I am an avid hiker and backpacker, so the smaller, lighter Tamrons are appealing; but I also photograph a good amount of architecture and interiors, so the wider-angle Sigma lens is most appealing. Given what I have just told you and myself, then a combination of the Sigma 14-24 mm and Tamron 28-75 mm may be the optimum solution for me. In any case, the 10 liter Moment sling bag would be the most accommodating for both of those lenses if I am one of the lucky ones to win. Thanks again for your good work, Matthew.

@@jdjames997 Hello, Jesse: I got the Sigma 14-24mm and combined it with a Tamron 28-200mm and a Sony A7 RII for a simplified 2-lens landscape and architecture photography kit when when weight and carrying capacity are not an issue. For hiking and backpacking, I bought the Sony 20mm f/1.8 to carry with the Tamron 28-200mm instead of the Sigma 14-24mm. All three lenses combined with the A7 RII's readily croppable 42mp standard image size, that can also be cropped to a still-usable 18mp in APS-C mode with ClearImage Zoom turned on for an effective range of 14mm-600mm-gives me great versatility. (200mm in APS-C equals 300mm. ClearImage Zoom can multiply that focal length by 2 for 600mm.) Also, the hype about the Sony 20mm f/1.8 is real. As another reviewer has said, you get 90% of the 24mm f/1.4 G-Master quality for two-thirds of its price. I am sorry if I busted your budget, but I am very excited about these investments now that I have learned more about the camera's focusing features to get the most out of the lenses and the camera's sensor. I recently learned that the camera's manual focus assist feature zooms 12.5x to a selected area for ultra precise focusing.

I like to see creators like yourself get appropriate compensation for your work and I feel that people may be hesitant to use your affiliate links until you have completed your review, hence, not allowing your video to generate as much affiliate link revenue upon release as it could. Otherwise, this review was extremely helpful, in conjuction with your blog post, in guiding me towards my lens choice. If I was to choose between the 6L and the 10L I'd go with the 10L all the way. Excellent review, I also purchased the tamron, but shortly after found a great deal for a sigma 20mm f1.4 purchased necessary filters for its bulbous front element and haven’t used tamron since cause 20 is wide enough for me. I however see the tamron as something I will use on a gimbal or for when I do not want size and weight of 20. But the 14-24 is intriguing to me plus the filters I use on the 20 will also work on the front of the 14 24. So I see a future sigma purchase. Again great review, great images as well. And 6 tote works for me. I also would add yes I am old as well but I don’t fret the weight of good lenses. For me the Sigma is sexier.

Good review, appreciate your honesty. This is one of those choices where the Sigma is clearly better, but at what cost? Not just money but weight and portability. If I was taking landscape or architecture shots and getting paid to do so, the Sigma would clearly make sense, and you’d just hoof it around and deal with it. I have several Sigma lenses, & love them. But this one is hard to justify for $1,300-1,400. I’m not getting paid to shoot shots that it’s capable of. It may be worth it if you need it all the time, but for me the Tamron is probably good enough most of the time. I could take the $500+ savings and buy more gear, or just save the money. I WANT the Sigma, but I don’t need it. The other issue is resale, I will say the Sigma lenses (especially ART) go for a premium on eBay, even used. So there’s that to consider, but your going to loose on both on crazy ebay fees reselling them. Carrying around a heavy lens for occasional use seems silly, my other Sigma lenses already make by backpack too heavy….
@MatthewGore
@MatthewGore 3 жыл бұрын
That's how I feel about it too, although for me, the flare issue with the Sigma is a serious consideration. The other thing is that for a lot of people who are shooting with 24 megapixel cameras instead of 42, the differences seen in this video (pretty minor) would be negligible. Still, I continue to shoot with the Tamron because I own it and don't feel like selling it, and I never feel as though my images aren't sharp enough or wide enough... but I so sorta wish that I had waited a bit longer and bought the Sigma.

I was only mentioning it as a focal length match; I haven't spent enough time with it to really be able to compare it with the Sigma for image quality. I am looking to get A7iv + Tamron 35-150 (the perfect lens for me for 90% of my wedding days) then add a wide lens and maybe a fast prime. I just can't decide what! As you said in your video 20mm is probably wide enough most of the time so would I be much better off with a really fast Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens at only $899? Are you thinking of review the Tam 35-150?
@MatthewGore
@MatthewGore 2 жыл бұрын
@@Speak_Out_and_Remove_All_Doubt I've actually been working on a review of the Tamron 35-150 for a while now, and optically it is awesome. I haven't published the review because, in the months that I shot with it, I never really managed to take any good pictures... the weather has been awful, and I haven't been able to get out of my own neighborhood a whole lot. But it's coming soon. The wide end... that's really a matter of personal taste. Personally, I'm just not very good at taking photos with ultra wide angle lenses... probably because I never had access to them when I was younger and was learning how to compose pictures... and I'm working on it, but not making much progress :-) So, if you're good with ultra-wides, or want to get good with them, then get what will help you. There are plenty of good photographers out there who never shoot wider than 24mm or even 35mm, so it's all just a matter of what you want to achieve. Good luck!

@@MatthewGore I know what you mean about wide lenses, I rarely use my 24-70 at 24mm which is why the 35-150 looks to be such a good lens for me, can't wait for your review. Don't sell yourself short either, some of those wide shots in the above video were really good, as you say getting close whilst keeping a lot in the frame is cool like your market stall image, then on the corner of a building seeing down both streets is clever and the long exposure shots of the all the roads were really good. My wide angle shots are more of a necessity of wedding photography, when you don't have much room or you want to get the dress to fill most of the image or on the dance floor etc. Keep up the great work.

@MatthewGore
@MatthewGore 2 жыл бұрын
They're both great lenses. I don't shoot astro much, so I can't give you a definitive answer (you probably saw that my brief attempts were thwarted by the moon during this review). Since they're both going to let in the same amount of light, and they're both nice and sharp, and coma is only an issue in the extreme corners for both, I'd recommend going with the zoom range that you prefer... if you want something as wide as 14mm, then the choice is obvious. If you don't care about it being that wide, then the 17-28 is much cheaper and lighter. If you'd be satisfied with a 20mm field of view, then also consider the new Sigma 20mm f/2, which will double the amount of light you can gather and has excellent image quality. bhpho.to/3JHwh92

I really think I might end up getting the 17-28 and the 35mm f.18. I think that having a fast 35 will be far more useful for what I shoot in terms of video and the 17-28 will open/challenge me to be more creative in my walk around street photography.

It's weird to see how Seattle looks in TLOU 2; when you're heading to the aquarium, in the game you have to navigate the Alaskan Way Viaduct, an elevated highway along the waterfront. In real life, though, that was torn down several years ago... and of course, this part of the park that fell into the Sound is now gone... so the game is like visiting Seattle's past, in the future. It makes sense in the game's timeline, though.

Awesome review. The Sigma looks very professional as all their Art Lenses do. The sharpness and resolution of both lenses seem to be about equal unless your pixel peeping. The price and weight of the tamron makes it more attractive for budget conscious photographers and vloggers alike. 10L bag please.

Your Sigma Tamron tri-factor review was compressive. I shoot a Sony A7III and is looking to get a 24-70mm, think I may go with the Sigma. The images captured for the trio review were fantastic, I particularly relished those from the Black Lives matter.

I've been a photographer for 25 years, but I don't really do video... so I wouldn't really know what I'm talking about any more than any other random guy on the street. That's probably something best left for other channels to deal with.

Much like you, I prefer to travel as light as possible, so the Tamron 17-28mm is a no brainer for me. Likewise, the 6L would be the move for me, as well!

A few comments: I'm astounded by the crowd at Bernie's rally in Tacoma. Puts Biden's rallies to shame. Once again the establishment robbed Bernie of his nomination! I've shot the grain bins (at 13:07). It may have been decades ago, but would need to dig out my transparencies to be sure. If the shots were digital (and therefore more recent), then I've since lost them in a crash (because I know I don't have any existing digital shots of them). At 14:50, the best explanation I've ever seen of why lenses of this type are subject to lens flare!

I actually watched this full screen on a 5k monitor :-) I like the colors from the Tamron. They seem "cooler" than the Sigma's.
@MatthewGore
@MatthewGore 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Tamron is definitely much cooler. These were processed with the color temp. set to "Daylight" for both lenses in ACR with no lens-specific profiles, but of course, if you leave it to auto white balance (in camera or in post), they come out with the colors looking pretty much identical.

I originally bought the Tamron for my a7r3 ... 2 days later, I returned it for the sigma. Sigma is superior by far if you are using a resolution camera. I'm sure the Tamron would be good enough for a a73 but not an a7r3.

The filters killed it for me on the Sigma. I could justify the extra price if it wasn't for that, and it "seems" like it would be the easiest flaw to change if we somehow could magically change flaws about lenses.
@MatthewGore
@MatthewGore 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If you use a lot of filters, that would be a significant drawback for the Sigma. There are filter holders that can attach to the front of the lens, but they'll be square/rectangular, and no VNDs.
