I've been watching mft lense videos for a couple days now before I make my first "nifty 50" purchase for my pocket 4k. This video has been the best demonstration I've seen comparing lens differences. The majority out there say you can't go wrong with the lumix 25mm and hard to argue that for the price but wow what a difference in the sigma. The lumix blur looks very distracting, I'm glad I checked this out! Most definitely subbed.
@craigjohnchronicles25043 жыл бұрын
Just found this video while searching for the Sigma 16mm f/1.4. Just a comment about the Lumix 25/1.7. The bokeh rendering is a very "old school" lens style rendering - like the old Contax Zeiss 50mm lenses from the mid 70's to mid 80's, and the old Nikon 50mm from 60's through the 80's. Even the old Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lens, had a very similar bokeh rendering. Some call it busy or fussy. I call it "bubbly and painterly". It's certainly a very unique rendering style - which, in certainly applications, is absolutely stunning. However, the Nikon versions of those old 50mm lenses, were very 'glowy' and not overly sharp wide open, and thus fantastically problematic. I didn't find them appealing. On the other hand, the old Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 was razor sharp wide open, with that bubbly painterly bokeh, which makes it a very desirable lens - again, in certain applications. The problem with the Panasonic Lumix 25mm is, much like the old Nikon lenses, it's not sharp wide open. That's unfortunate, as I don't buy fast aperture lenses to stop down to f/2.8, much less f/4 or f/8 - to increase sharpness. I want that dreamy background. I definitely appreciate both rendering styles. But they have to have some level of sharpness to make it work. Great video, and thanks for the comparison. :)

Hey just found your channel. I’m also an MFT user in SA. I have the 25mm Lumix Leica F1.4 but I got it second hand for a good deal. Glad it helped. Not at all, I much prefer it. Never been a MAJOR fan of 50mm (full frame)...I generally gravitate towards more telephone looks. In saying that I'm sure the die hard 50mm guys would possibly take some time getting used to it. But for me, 50mm just had too much distortion.

I love my 56mm. I tried a used copy of the 16mm, but the focus ring was very loose, and there were some other issues, and I returned it and bought the PL 15mm. So now I am thinking about the 30mm, which is how I came across this video. You make a very good case for it. Sometimes, the 56mm is too long. I want something I can isolate a subject with, but also include a lot of context. A 25mm is the obvious answer, but I just want something that will get just a little closer. And it looks like the optics are as good as the 56mm.

Differences are minimal and hardly signifigant. Sigma have improved a lot since I used their 24mm wide angle in the 1970s. This optic had built in filters, which were useful, but the excellent build quality was let down by soft images at wide apertures, although in those pre digital days when the instamatic provided most people with images they thought unbeatable you couldn't really lose with more serious cameras plus basic optics.

"The Lumix is a little too busy, due to the seven blades." The example was shot wide-open at f/1.7, so the aperture blades are completely out of the way, and won't affect the image at all. You have a perfectly circular opening, from the lens elements and the barrel of the lens. The number of blades ONLY affects the bokeh when the lens is stopped down from wide-open.
@RICH_Photography3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, the number of blades definitely affects a lens wide open, if you watch the mechanical parts of a 5 blade, 7 blade or 9 blade, it severely affects the bokeh at wide open.
@StephenStrangways3 жыл бұрын
@@RICH_Photography take a look at this video, starting at 4:20. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYOalJyYeduMr9E Perfectly round aperture when wide open, as the blades are completely clear out of the way. Once the lens is stopped down, the blades form a pentagon, so now the blades will be affecting the bokeh. When the blades are completely hidden away from the optical path they don't affect anything at all. 7 or 9 blades, remove a few and have 3 blades, or 0 blades, or put 40 blades in there but hide them away beyond the lens elements, behind a cover plate, and they don't affect anything at all.

@avarimihailov5504 Жыл бұрын
There is a decent difference in the aperture of the Sigma 30mm F1.4 versus the Lumix 25mmF1.7, plus the difference in focal length. Sigma 30mm is closer to the subject, which means the bokeh will be softer. The closer you get to the subject with the Lumix 25mm f1.7, the softer and more pleasant its bokeh will be, but in terms of aperture it loses to the Sigma 30mm F1.4. Therefore, comparing these lenses is not entirely correct. It is necessary to compare lenses of the same focal length and aperture ratio. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language
@RICH_Photography Жыл бұрын
Well spotted, the reason for the comparison is these are 2 entry level M43 lenses at similar price points and very similar focal ranges. This is why there's a test at the same distance, and same crop. Comparing these lenses for someone deciding between these 2 is very relevant, and the Sigma is definitely far superior to the Lumix. Well done on the English, appreciate the comment, your English is actually very good 🙏

The Sigma trio are odd focal lengths on MFT. On APSC they are more c onventional and are equivalents of 35, 50, and 85mm lengths. However, their unconventional focal lengths on MFT of 32, 60, and 112mm is a real advantage, and I like them. The Lumix 20mm slots in as complementary to these Sigmas, however at the 25mm length the Pana-Leica is not so standout and it becomes a toss-up between the more contrasty Panasonic, or the more creamy Olympus f1.2 Pro and its wonderful manual focus clutch.

@@RICH_Photography yes, but if you start using f numbers to describe DOF you're just going to confuse the crap out of people who don't know any better. That f number is a mathematical expression of the relationship between the focal length and the diameter of the lens. It's a ratio.

Could you expiriment with the Lumix with flaring and fringing? With its fewer blades, it may make some pretty unique "sun stars".

Something is wrong with that lumix 25mm lens copy. Looks like things or not even blurry but duplicated. Weird! Sigma is very sharp and gives a nice bokeh.

Hi, I currently have a pen-f that I love and 2 objectives sigma 30mm 1,4 and the 45mm 1,8 olympus. As a budget I have 1300/1700 Euros and I am looking for one or 2 "definitive" objectives for the meantime (later you will see) that are capable of doing different types of photography ranging from weddings such as portraits even in low light, football matches mainly during the day and occasional landscapes.I am looking for objectives that are unique as compactness, performance and versatility compared to all systems photographic apsc, full, frame etc ... ...if I stay in the micro 4/3 I'm interested and I don't see real alternatives to the Om system / olympus 8-25mm, 12-100mm, 20mm 1,4 and last probably also Om lenses 40-150mm f4 or sigma 56mm 1,4. I am confused because if the 20mm 1,4 can replace my sigma 30mm in all ways, even as a bokeh, I would take it with my eyes closed. 12-100mm and these would also be useful for taking medium and long distance portraits of the spouses.If I really have to keep my pen-f with a single lens I would think of the 20mm or 15mm leica or the announced 9mm leica 1.7 ... or also have a second no micro 4/3 body with other lenses also used? Thanks.

Lumix/Leica 25 / f1.4 will be more interesting to compare IMHO

Whilst both will be 1.4 lenses, the pricing of the Leica 25mm 1.4 is double the Sigma.

Not interesting. Not Lumix 25/1.7, but Leica 25/1.4 !!!

@@RICH_Photography Lol, Well thank you very much. I bought the trio set of 1.4's from sigma and I couldn't be happier. Perfect pairing with the GH6.
