Good comparison and thoughts on what is right for what kind of photography you do. I like the 1.2 look as well and pin sharpness isn't always a good look. However at least with the Sigma you can blur in post if it suits. You can't sharpen a blurred image in the 1.2 if you want it to be a little sharpened when cropping in.

@@jenniferclaudio8937 it is a procedure that allows a user to correct for small errors of front- or back-focusing. With lenses having wide apertures less than f2.8 such as f1.2 and f1.4 its very important. Micro focus adjust is a feature on high Canon dslrs such aa the 5dmk4.

Julia, I think a better comparison would be the Canon 85 1.4L with the Sigma, as you are comparing better apples. Here would be my issue with the Sigma. It just appears that the lens barrel from the mount to the base of the focus ring is very long and when you tack on the Canon EF to RF Adapter it makes it even longer it seems. For me I would opt for the Canon 1.4 since it also has IS, where the Sigma does not. Cheers!

Hi Steven, sorry for the late reply as I've been ill. I did not use the lens to test sun flare as I don't typically use flare for my portrait projects. Great video! The only thing I'm a little confused about however is why you didn't use the Sigma mc-11 for use on the Sony? You are using a Sigma lens, so why use the metabones instead of using Sigma's native adapter that is designed to be used with their lenses? Was it because you already owned the metabones already prior to getting the sigma lens? If it works well then it doesn't matter, but I've heard many reports of the metabones working better with native Canon glass but not working as smoothly as the mc-11 when mounting sigma lenses.

Thank you so much for this review Julia! Looking at buying an 85mm myself this was super helpful. I think I'll have to save up and go for the Canon in the end, as the Sigma lenses seem to all have this back-focusing issue on full-length portraits, which is such a shame because otherwise they're such lovely lenses. I have the 24, 35 and 50mm Sigma Art lenses (Canon mount) and I can only put my money on the 35. The other two seem to miss focus every single time I shoot full-length portraits which is so frustrating, especially when you're trying to shoot a wedding. So yes, thanks very much for this!

So glad you found it helpful! I know, I was really bummed about it not focusing on the full body shots. I'm going to make a video about micro adjusting Sigma lenses to see if it actually helps the front/back focusing issues soon :)

Just think that you should have used the canon version of the sigma in this review so in my opinion this was not a fair, reliable comparison. Another option would be to use.the canon 85mm on the Sony with the adaptor. Lets not forget that the Sony focusing system benefits tremendously any lens when it comes to the sharpness bit since the AF is different, no mirror, no separate AF module, everything done in the sensor and you have ore accuracy. It would be nice to see a review of these two now with the canon 85 in the Sony with an adaptor.

Great video Julia! I’m still confused about which one I’d prefer 😄 I rented the Canon 85mm 1.2 once and absolutely loved it. Saving to buy one, the cheaper Sigma is tempting, but I’m after it for up close nature photography and I love the very creamy bokeh from the Canon 85mm @ 1.2 Ahhh, what to do... what to do 😂

Oh, I dropped my Sigma 35mm 1.4 the other day from about 4 feet onto a hard surface, smashing my filter... but thankfully nothing bad happened to the lens... impressed with Sigma!

Buy Canon 1.4 - better AF (especially for video and future bodies), IS, better resolution than 1.2II or wait for R 85/1.2 ;-)

Alex Morgan, I have that lens, it’s great, my KZbin channel has several videos about my pictures with that lens :) I rented the 85mm f/1.2 and used it for some nature photography and portraits and have been in love with it ever since, just trying to scrape the money together to get one 😂 tho the Sigma May win out for price.

Oh damn!! So good that it didn't break, I've never dropped one of my Canon lenses before, so I wonder how it would hold up lol next video - dropping my lenses! But yeah I agree it's a tough decision between the two, they are both beautiful lenses 😫

Have you shot the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM? Curious to hear how you feel it performs in terms of portraits to the 1.2.

I haven't used that lens yet, but I definitely want to try it out this year and I'll make a video about it when I do!

Hi Julia, I. have some question that I am trying to find and answer to but it is very difficult. Hope you can clarify: We all know that the sigma lenses have a bit of bad fame for their focusing system. Some people say that don't experience any problems and others say they do. Now read that live view when used the people that experience the problem they don't see that problem. (assuming for DSLR) 1) Have you tried a sigma lens that had this problem? 2) Have you seen that problem in live view? 3) Have you tried to use that same lens in a mirrorless camera with adaptor? To double check if the problem still there? 4) Do you know why sigma have this problem on DSLR? 5) Do you know if this problem still persists nowadays? 6) Do native sigma lenses for mirrorless camera have this problem? TiA a lot.

I think the answer to this is difficult because not all lenses have this issue, some are perfectly fine straight out of the box, some need to be adjusted with the dock and they're fixed and some need adjusting and it will still back focus as I have experienced with my 24mm :( I haven't tried using these in live view, I find that shooting that way on the 5D4 is very slow and the focus point is too big so it wouldn't be accurate on the model's eye, so unfortunately I don't have any answers there for you! Lenses do not back focus on mirrorless bodies, so you wouldn't have any issues like this on the EOS R or A7III, etc. It's also not just Sigma - any lens has the ability to back focus. And why this happens on DSLRs and not on mirrorless: Mirrorless cameras use phase and contrast AF on the sensor unlike DSLRs which reflect light through the mirror to a separate AF sensor, so back/front focusing issues don't exist in mirrorless. I hope that answers some of your questions!

@@juliatrotti yes indeed. For example, have you tried your 24mm on any mirrorless that you have got and you saw that that problem was not there anymore?
@pyroBlastM4 жыл бұрын
@@juliatrotti Thanks. Got it. Another question please. Did you have any lenses that had to be AFMA to extremes that worked very well on your Sony adapted (obviously not adjusted)? I know that mirrorless don't have the mirror but would like to know from experience and something that you have noticed/expreienced. TiA
