Canon 85F1.2L is a special lens in the entire EF lens history, along with 200f1.8L and EF 50F1L. Hall of fame if you like to call it. Other lenses are great but not legendary like them.

Good comparison and thoughts on what is right for what kind of photography you do. I like the 1.2 look as well and pin sharpness isn't always a good look. However at least with the Sigma you can blur in post if it suits. You can't sharpen a blurred image in the 1.2 if you want it to be a little sharpened when cropping in.

Myself I sold my Canon 85mm 1.2 because it's so slow to focus, yes beautiful, but it's so slow. I was going to run with Canon's 85mm 1.4 but my camera shop showed me that the Sigma 85mm 1.4 is sharper and just as fast. Landed on the Sigma 85mm 1.4, very happy.

May I ask what us a focus micro adjustment?
@milestrevelyan
@milestrevelyan 6 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferclaudio8937 it is a procedure that allows a user to correct for small errors of front- or back-focusing. With lenses having wide apertures less than f2.8 such as f1.2 and f1.4 its very important. Micro focus adjust is a feature on high Canon dslrs such aa the 5dmk4.

Julia, I think a better comparison would be the Canon 85 1.4L with the Sigma, as you are comparing better apples. Here would be my issue with the Sigma. It just appears that the lens barrel from the mount to the base of the focus ring is very long and when you tack on the Canon EF to RF Adapter it makes it even longer it seems. For me I would opt for the Canon 1.4 since it also has IS, where the Sigma does not. Cheers!

Hi Julia, thanks so much for the excellent review of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art lens. Another lens you might want to compare and review is the new Canon 85mm f/1.4 IS lens. @josephpeppard561 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, sorry for the late reply as I've been ill. I did not use the lens to test sun flare as I don't typically use flare for my portrait projects. However I can say the lens excels in resolution, color rendition and bokeh quality. The lens is on the heavy side but not really a problem for a portrait shoot. I feel the Canon lens will typically hold it's value as compared to the Sigma 85mm f/1.4.

It would have been interesting to know what aperture you were using. I have just bought the Sigma for my Canon 5div and the autofocus is quite off. Focusing on the closest eye in all cases it was out of focus and the further eye was in focus. I guess that is where calibration come in, but I was told that straight out the box it should be calibrated and would have to be calibrated in a few months. So, quite disappointing.

That’s interesting how you mentioned the canon 85 having a more vintage look cause you also mentioned the same thing about the 35mm 1.4 Mark I lens compared to the Mark II. I guess you’ll find out for sure when you use the new 85 1.4! Do you think the canon 5d2 has also has a more vintage look compared to the 5d4 since it’s an older camera? Time to whip that baby out again! I have the 35 and 50 lens and am very happy with them but now I’m tempted to get the 85! I just hate how you have to stand so far away even just to get a 3/4 shot!

Great video! The only thing I'm a little confused about however is why you didn't use the Sigma mc-11 for use on the Sony? You are using a Sigma lens, so why use the metabones instead of using Sigma's native adapter that is designed to be used with their lenses? Was it because you already owned the metabones already prior to getting the sigma lens? If it works well then it doesn't matter, but I've heard many reports of the metabones working better with native Canon glass but not working as smoothly as the mc-11 when mounting sigma lenses.

Thank you so much for this review Julia! Looking at buying an 85mm myself this was super helpful. I think I'll have to save up and go for the Canon in the end, as the Sigma lenses seem to all have this back-focusing issue on full-length portraits, which is such a shame because otherwise they're such lovely lenses. I have the 24, 35 and 50mm Sigma Art lenses (Canon mount) and I can only put my money on the 35. The other two seem to miss focus every single time I shoot full-length portraits which is so frustrating, especially when you're trying to shoot a wedding. So yes, thanks very much for this!
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 6 жыл бұрын
So glad you found it helpful! I know, I was really bummed about it not focusing on the full body shots. I use the 85mm usually for fuller length portraits at weddings and for e-commerce, so focusing at full body is a must for me. It's such a shame because closeup its TACK sharp! I'm going to make a video about micro adjusting Sigma lenses to see if it actually helps the front/back focusing issues soon :)

about going closer, I think both cameras you used were full frames but the difference is that with the sigma you used a converter which cropped some of the frames of your camera. having said that if you were to use the same converter on a canon you would have got the same results. there is a camera difference too which I think is good to have such matter in a comparison. you see Sony is a mirror-less camera plus new edition. to my opinion if you could compare EOS-R to Sony alpha A7iii that comparison would have made more sense, however I loved the video and please make more..

Just think that you should have used the canon version of the sigma in this review so in my opinion this was not a fair, reliable comparison. Another option would be to use.the canon 85mm on the Sony with the adaptor. Lets not forget that the Sony focusing system benefits tremendously any lens when it comes to the sharpness bit since the AF is different, no mirror, no separate AF module, everything done in the sensor and you have ore accuracy. It would be nice to see a review of these two now with the canon 85 in the Sony with an adaptor.

Hi Julia, thanks for the review and I really love your channel. You mention the lens was out of focus slightly for the full body shots. I own the sigma 35mm sigma 1.4 art lens and out of the box I found I had the same problem. I over came this by calibration with the sigma dock which really worked and the lens is now amazing. It’s a shame but I think all the sigma art lens need that little tweak to uncover there full potential.

Yeah I agree, I have the Sigma 24mm and I have lots of problems with back focusing. I was pleasantly surprised that the Sigma 85 managed to get tack sharp photos the majority of the time though with the exception of the full body shots! I have micro adjusted my 24 but honestly haven't shot with it since then as I find it's unreliable so I just don't reach for it. I'll have to take it out for a spin soon to see if the micro adjusting worked!

The Sigma is clinically good but lacks character and tonal value in its photos , I've got one myself . As for Autofocus, when focusing further then 5 meters away the hit rate drastically drops unless you focus centre frame. This is for me the biggest flaw. Shot in Nikon d810

pieter van der walt would love to hear your reply. I have just upgraded from the d600 to the D800E. I have the sigma 35 art and like you said up close it is nice but the 35 is made to shot close. Further I miss focus more than I would like. Right now I own the 85 1.4d but feel I am lacking with the more MPs. Would you recommend the sigma 85? I know you say it misses a lot from further back. I don’t want to drop the cash and have this be an issue because I usually buy second hand.

@@jamesjackson4264 if you fine tune the lens with the tap in console then its " ok " . If your doing head and shoulder shots then your hit rate will be high . But full body shots at f2.8 and wider you will have a 50 - 70 % hit rate, and that's by using the centre AF point . Far outer focus points your looking at a 2 out 10 hit rate at f1.4 for full body shots .

Great video Julia! I’m still confused about which one I’d prefer 😄 I rented the Canon 85mm 1.2 once and absolutely loved it. Saving to buy one, the cheaper Sigma is tempting, but I’m after it for up close nature photography and I love the very creamy bokeh from the Canon 85mm @ 1.2 Ahhh, what to do... what to do 😂

Hi Julia, I. have some question that I am trying to find and answer to but it is very difficult. Hope you can clarify: We all know that the sigma lenses have a bit of bad fame for their focusing system. Some people say that don't experience any problems and others say they do. Now read that live view when used the people that experience the problem they don't see that problem. (assuming for DSLR) 1) Have you tried a sigma lens that had this problem? 2) Have you seen that problem in live view? 3) Have you tried to use that same lens in a mirrorless camera with adaptor? To double check if the problem still there? 4) Do you know why sigma have this problem on DSLR? 5) Do you know if this problem still persists nowadays? 6) Do native sigma lenses for mirrorless camera have this problem? TiA a lot.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 4 жыл бұрын
I think the answer to this is difficult because not all lenses have this issue, some are perfectly fine straight out of the box, some need to be adjusted with the dock and they're fixed and some need adjusting and it will still back focus as I have experienced with my 24mm :( I haven't tried using these in live view, I find that shooting that way on the 5D4 is very slow and the focus point is too big so it wouldn't be accurate on the model's eye, so unfortunately I don't have any answers there for you! Lenses do not back focus on mirrorless bodies, so you wouldn't have any issues like this on the EOS R or A7III, etc. It's also not just Sigma - any lens has the ability to back focus. And why this happens on DSLRs and not on mirrorless: Mirrorless cameras use phase and contrast AF on the sensor unlike DSLRs which reflect light through the mirror to a separate AF sensor, so back/front focusing issues don't exist in mirrorless. I hope that answers some of your questions!
@pyroBlastM
@pyroBlastM 4 жыл бұрын
@@juliatrotti yes indeed. For example, have you tried your 24mm on any mirrorless that you have got and you saw that that problem was not there anymore?
@pyroBlastM

@@juliatrotti Thanks. Got it. Another question please. Did you have any lenses that had to be AFMA to extremes that worked very well on your Sony adapted (obviously not adjusted)? I know that mirrorless don't have the mirror but would like to know from experience and something that you have noticed/expreienced. TiA
