After Sigma Sound Studios closed in 2003 thousands of tapes of all kinds to the Drexel University Audio Archive department. There, around 2005, Toby Seay noticed that on one box was the hand written name, David Bowie.
Later in 2009 two more of these Sigma reel-to-reel tapes appeared on eBay which drew the attention of several parties including David Bowie himself. David's manager called Toby Seay at Drexel and said 'wtf? I thought you had these tapes?'. Toby reassures Bowie's people that these eBay tapes were never part of the collection he received.
After some intrigue and investigation the seller's identity was discovered and he was convinced to turn over all of the tapes, transfers and any copies in his possession.
On reel #2 from day two are three of the earliest recordings of the song Young Americans. None of which appear in any form on the album or any official recording anywhere.
