Sign Language Lessons - Valentines Day (ASL Snippets #8)
(Are you a new signer? Start with ASL Snippets #1)
February 14 is Valentine's Day! Let's celebrate with a video especially made for the occasion. Let's learn some common signs that relate to the theme of Valentine's Day and "love." Hope you enjoy this ASL Snippets video. Be sure to click thumbs up, leave a comment, and share with others!
Footnote:
American Sign Language is a very rich, complex, and unique language. To accurately learn ASL takes commitment and motivation. KZbin is FULL of videos by individuals who make "cutesy" little videos that show random signs and claim to be teaching "sign language." Most of them talk, talk talk, sign, talk, talk, talk, sign.... as a result, they are spreading wrong information about what ASL is and how it is used. Some examples - Melissa Schenk, Ryan Moriarty, Kate Maria, etc. Each of their videos have a lot of views, but for each one of them, the information they are spreading is wrong. And because each one of them gets paid for their videos, not only are they "teaching" a language that they know nothing about, they are also making money at the expense of the Deaf. Is it really that big of a deal? What do you think? A minority culture that is often discriminated against and their language treated like some "cutesy quasi-thing" that's not a "real language."
If you have watched and voted thumbs-up on their videos and subscribed to their channels, you're helping to encourage them to continue to take advantage of the Deaf and to wrongly profit off a language that they are teaching wrong. Please, UNsubscribe from them, vote thumbs-down, and leave a comment to encourage others to look for and support accurate sources. Then, take the time to find accurate videos. Ask the video makers where they learned and if they are qualified to teach.
Take a moment to vote thumbs-up and leave a positive comment on videos made by individuals who truly KNOW sign language. Subscribe to their channel and share their videos with others. Please help to actively spread the accurate use of ASL.
On behalf of the Deaf community and those of us who look to have our language, community and culture get the respect they deserve, I thank you.

It's brilliant! Not one word written to tell us what the signs are but I learned, "engaged", "in love", "date", "rose", "heart", etc,......it's true that you can learn sign language without CC. I already knew sign language from a friend I had in my teen years, but she could only teach me for the time we lived across from one another. That was 3 years. So when she moved away, her lessons went with her but I had a good foundation and can communicate effectively with the deaf. But since our time together was hours in a day and not 8 hours every day, I learned what she _could_ teach me but much was left out. I'm grateful for your video uploads.

Kelline Pickett Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. :) And yes, it is possible to teach sign language without needing written words. Instead, focus on concepts. :) Hope you continue to enjoy my videos.

I loved that you didn't use text or a voice over, it actually made it a lot easier to concentrate on and learn the signs :)

I'm sorry if you have it out there and missed it (my mobile app seems to miss a lot of videos) but I would absolutely love to have a lesson from you on numbers. My ASL instructor moved too quickly and I find them, in particular, next to impossible to learn from books. Like any math, once you're behind you're really SOL. :-)

There are three widely used signs - index finger, middle finger, and "V" fingers (although I personally don't like the "V" fingers because that is not ASL).

Question: I learned "Valentine's Day" heart with middle fingers tracing the heart shape on the chest, not index fingers. Are both okay/correct?

Have anyone noticed Rob is left handed??!! When you sign with him it is as if your right hand does not have to make the transition from one side of you body and brain to the other. Just look and think about it when you sign with him. See how much easier it is for you. Sorry a out you left handed guys. She he Signs music it is as if you can hear the music from the Signs.

Nice video but it does not help us learn what he is trying to show us in sign language. he should write "face" up in the screen if he is doing the sign language for face. Is his purpose for this video to help us learn how to identify things in american sign language way, or he is just talking to people who already know their sign language and not to people who are just learning ? He seemed very talented and very precise with what he is demonstrating but he just need to label it in writing (on the screen) so that new learners like us will be able to identify and understand what his topic is.

You have to practice, that's why. The purpose of this video WITHOUT closed captions, which is what you were talking about right? It's supposed to help you learn.
