I have mild rosacea, and according to what I've read about the condition over the years, a chronically compromised moisture barrier is a part of it. I basically have to use barrier repairing products forever and I don't think completely fixing it is a possibility 😒. I still love watching videos like this and have gained a lot of insight on how to best care for my moisture barrier. I wish the focus on hydration and nurturing our skin were emphasized in the US, rather than punishing it with harsh products when it doesn't behave the way we want it to. We forget that it's an organ!

@@KellyDriscoll hello Kelly,love your channel!!Your such a wonderful wealth of information and your so easy to watch.I did a really stupid thing,I am a 40 year old female with rosacea,dermatitis,rashes and hives on my face and neck....I'm seeing an immunologist next year but it's a long wait and I was hoping you may be able to give me some advice in the meantime...I ordered a tca peel online and ever since I used it (burned my face off) my skin has been very irritated and inflamed,I constantly flush and it burns and feels so hot,i have always had mild flushing episodes for most of my life but it has never been this bad before...I have combination skin that started producing excessive amounts of oil and I have blackheads on my nose....I have stopped using perscription tretonoin for the last 5 days and I don't exfoliate anyway now as it hurts too much ,even the gentlest ones....Over the last 5 days of following your instructions my skin has not improved at all,is this common ? I know it may take 2 weeks to 6 weeks but i thought after 5 days I would start to notice even a minor change in irritation and redness levels ?I find that a lot of mornings I will wake up and my skin looks quiet calm,then as soon as i rub a product into it,or even just touch it with my hands it starts to go really red...this is not from product irritation or anything like that, its just the friction,even rubbing my skin lightly or splashing water over it and wiping it clean with a cotton round makes my skin turn red...Im thinking it may be a mast cell reaction as I also have these types of reactions to food....so I'm really confused as to whether it is a barrier problem or allergic reactions or maybe both. ...What was your experience like if you can remember,how long did it take to see even a minor reduction in irritation and redness ? I'm also scared to stop using my tretonoin for a long period of time incase I start to lose firmness I find it gives my skin....

How I wish I'd had this video in Sept 2018 when I damaged my moisture barrier by leaving a glycolic exfoliator on too long. My skin was so sensitive that the moving air from the air conditioner bothered it. It took me months to recover. I did all the right things to heal my skin, (eventually) but maybe I could have sped things along a little by recognising the signs and following the advise here. Thank you for the education. Key of course is setting a timer when I use glycolic. 😁

For me the biggest sign of dehydration is tightness/dullness. I'm both dry and dehydrated so I'm very careful to use hydrating products in conjunction with emollients/occlusives. If I'm very dry I get flakes (thank you eczema), but my skin feels two sizes too small when it's very dehydrated. Weather, lifestyle, general health can all play a role in changing my skin, so I change my products/layers accordingly. Best wishes.

I was using Thayers witch hazel for a couple years with a bit of argan oil or sweet almond oil and my skin didnt seem to have an issue. it started getting really sensitive and dry so i switched over to honey and jojoba oil. I got pregnant and my skin went so wonky! Ive always had great skin even in my past pregnancies so I wa sso cinfused but hey hormones. I started using essential oils, prob not diluted enough and ,aybe 9 months later my skin was just angry at me. I tried cerave and la rosay pose and my skin got madder and madder. I then had a food allergy that messed my skin up for a couple weeks and slowly recovered. at that point i knew I had done something to my skin. it was just so red, angry. flarred up. almost started to think i may have rosacea...but i just wasnt so quick to think that was the case. I came scross your video and a couple others that made me realize I may have in fact been slowly destroying my barrier. so i stopped everything...started oil cleansing and just sing some aloe and glycerine. unfortunatley the good skin only lasted a month and now im back to angry skin again. Im feeling a bit helpless and hate the idea of spending more money on skincare that may not work for me yet again. but im very tempted to buy some korean skincare, maybe the ones you recommended. I just dont know what to do and since ive never had skin issues, im feeling a bit vulnerable and disheartend. I though I could heal my skin naturally with some oil but Im not sure i can...

Currently in the very weak, starting to get to damaged stage. I should have listened to my skin earlier, it would feel very tight and dehydrated but have what seemed like pools of oil. Stopped moisturising as much, had a face wash that was too harsh, and then added a chemical exfoliate on top of all that to try to help breakouts and pores. Not to mention I wouldn't consistently wear SPF until I introduced chemical exfoliation. Skin is so dehydrated, I can do my routine (sans any actives) and end with a very well formulated moisturizer and be feeling tight and dry after a couple hours tops :( knowledge is power, wish I had known better earlier! Going to basics for now. A gentle cleanser, steps focusing on hydration, really listening to my skin, and liquid gold. Thankfully I didn't quite reach the sensitivity stage, so I'm hopeful to repair this with knowledge from you and others like James Welsh. Thank you for all the videos on the moisture barrier!

Maybe it's a hair though or some dirt/dust from the air or fibres from your clothes, especially on a right-after-skincare-face those stick really well. Make sure you apply your products lightly and in patting motion.Wait until the products to dry on your skin before applying the next product. Try to avoid cleanser that makes your skin feel squeaky clean because that will trigger the oil glands. So even if you put enough products, your sebum still gonna come out.

Hi Kelly! This video is very informative. I have Combination skin with an Oily forehead and a dry U Zone, but I actually have flaky skin on the bridge of my nose and between my eyebrows. I'm currently using a low ph cleanser Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser and moisturize with Etude House 2x Barrier Cream. In addition, I also sleep with a humidifier because I live in Nevada where it's bone dry. What would you suggest to get rid of the flakiness? I've tried the 5.5 Relief toner but after 2 days my skin was kind of itchy same with the Laneige. Should I add a serum to my routine?
@lorainemcgillivray775 жыл бұрын
Hi obviously not Kelly, but I have eczema so deal with a lot of flakes. Gentle use of a washcloth can help get rid of surface flakes DON'T SCRUB! Also I use a gentle lactic acid toner a couple of times a week (DHC Soothing Lotion) to dissolve the glue holding the flaky skin onto my face (patch test any new product as I notice you mentioned itching). You need to use an emollient on dry/flaky skin either the barrier repair products mentioned like liquid gold etc or a more affordable option with minimal ingredients is squalane oil on the flaky patches under your moisturiser. Hope that helps.

@Nina-cd6uw4 жыл бұрын
It's not really "repairing" already, you need to wash it off, but it's at least not further damaging the barrier (if you use a gentle, hydrating cleanser for a second cleanse and definitely better than less gentle cleanding with more skin rubbing and tugging or harsher astringent ingredients). It's the right step into the right direction, but repair products need to come afterwards.

Can your skin oil production be normal while still having an impaired skin barrier? I don’t feel or look particularly oily or dry but I have breakouts that are lingering for weeks at a time while also noticing a very focused [non blemish] spot of irritation/inflammation. My esthetician says she can’t imagine I’d be dealing with an impaired skin barrier bc Ive been using the Osmosis Rescue serum for months but she also hasn’t seen my skin first hand since the end of Feb. I just don’t understand how/why my skin will show signs of improvement (mostly in my acne journey) only to seem to take 3 steps back overnight. I have been very mindful to not over do active products (i.e. Vit A, exfoliants, masks, etc.) or treatments (I.e. HF wand, LED, icing) on a given day/night and have mostly stuck to enzyme exfoliants as needed (I did however recently use the Good Molecules pineapple powder [acid] exfoliant once which seemed gentle though) so the only thing I figure that could be impeding progress or explain my most recent setback is impaired barrier function. I don’t feel like I am experiencing most of the common signs though so I’m just feeling super confused.

My barrier is so damaged; I have such dryness and redness, irritation, and pain any time I apply the most gentle thing. I’m worried my skin has no hope of healing and I’m only 22. I wish to be able to repair my barrier 🤞🏼

Don't wash your face not even with any natural based cleaners. To clean your face just soak for 15 mins with any DIYs and rinse it with just water. thank me later.

Sathish Kumar I just apply squalane oil and then rinse with bottled water for cleansing.

@@saraann3468 perfect. Hope it works for you. In my case, oil won't do the cleaning effect for me. So, I do use powder based like backhoil and others. I did this once before a month, my face improved a lot, later when I went back to usual cleaning n my face completely got out of improvement to worst. Still I'm on the process of healing. Stay updated. Let's fight this.

@@saraann3468 did you find improvement? And finding the cause wat made this is very important. In my case I left a face pack on face for around 2 hours regularly way back 6 months before, when I came home only I realized that how bad my face went. So please figure out what's the cause.

Sathish Kumar That’s interesting, I will not go back to any cleansers for a long time, I do not want to strip any moisture. I recently started a ceramide cream: illiyoon ato ceramide concentrate. I found out about it from Kelly Driscoll and I like it a lot so far! I use vitamin E as an emollient. Best of luck to you! Agreed, we have to stay positive and diligent with skin care and I pray we can get strong, healthy skin again 🤞🏼

Kelly, do you like the unscented Klairs Supple Preaparation toner for hydrating?
@KellyDriscoll5 жыл бұрын
I do like it, I consider it a "thicker" toner (like the pky mentioned in the vid) and found it worked best for me paired with a more watery toner.

I am curious about using the ceramide, fatty acid and cholesterol product first, so your barrier would absorb it without other previous layers of toners etc. in the way. Wouldn't that be better for direct contact?
@KellyDriscoll5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily going to "block" the absorption but you do want to make sure your products are layered properly (thinnest to thickest) most ceramide/cholesterol/fatty acid products are formulated as creams.
