So, what exactly is a Rasi? A Rasi refers to one twelfth of the ecliptic circle, but it goes beyond that. The term "Rasi" actually means a heap or clump, representing a pile of degrees. Imagine dividing the zodiac's 360 degrees into twelve piles of thirty degrees each - that's how Rasis are formed. This mathematical concept was used not only in ancient Hindu mathematics but also in Greek mathematics.
In astrology, however, a Rasi becomes more than just thirty degrees; it transforms into a collection of Varga charts. Each Rasi is further divided into smaller portions like Hora, Drekkana, Chaturthamsa, and more. From an astronomical and astrological perspective, a Rasi represents these little bits of space forming a significant part of our understanding.
