It’s interesting to note that initially Ridley Scott wanted a male lead to play Ripley. But once he saw Sigourney he changed his mind and made cinema history.
@nutyyyy
@nutyyyy 5 ай бұрын
That's not true. In the original script the characters were meant to be male and then they were changed to be unisex - I.e they could be cast as men or women depending on the wishes of the studio. The decision to make Ripley a woman was the idea of Fox studios. Veronica Cartwright was going to play Ripley before Sigourney was cast. But Ridley Scott did pick her basically straight away from when she walked in the door.

That was maybe my biggest frustration with the new Star Wars movies. Not only were they objectively bad, people who hated it were put away as "Oh you just hate women and can't stand a female lead in a sci-fi movie" completely blowing past the fact that most sci-fi fans absolutely adore the Alien franchise, where the lead actually goes through a believable arc - experiences fear, growth, has to overcome adversity to become the bad-ass "Stay away from her, you BITCH!" we all know and love.

Sigourney was my first hero. I came from a VERY sheltered household, for example, my mother covered my eyes anytime there was violence or sex on TV. When I was 13 I got a friend and she and her family loved sci-fi and horror, preferably both, and she grew up with the Alien franchise. For me, seeing Alien and Aliens, was SHOCKING. I remember taking the bus home after seeing Alien at her house, and I have never felt so excited and traumatized at the same time, my brain was just fried and I get how weird this sounds to people who had a normal childhood, but for me these movies were insane and otherworldly in a whole different way. I remember first seeing this at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. I had absolutely no idea what the film was about, the best way to see a movie in my opinion. The addition of an unknown actress playing the lead was even more of a bonus. Sigourney was so incredibly "right" for the role, and her casting was truly inspired. This film was so frightening that it scared the hell out of everybody. But when that creature came shooting out of his John Hurt's chest, you should have heard the SCREAMING!!! This is the kind of thing that you can only experience in an actual theater, and part of the enduring charm of "going out to the movies." After having viewed this Ridley Scott masterpiece at least thirty times, it's still one of my all-time favorites.

Alien is a masterpiece, and Sigourney did a superb work in it. It's impossible not to remember her as Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott (Alien) and James Cameron (Aliens) films. This nowadays 'big fish' buying all companies and trying to impose youngsters and ideologies everywhere should do us a favour and let them free again. Creativity should not be restricted by stupidity. Old school films surpass nowadays trash by far, and that is the main reason.

Yes!! Thank you! Sigourney Weaver gets it! She set the standard for a female action hero. She's not playing a man or what she views as an unlikable stereotype of a male action hero. She plays a strong feminine woman who is afraid, who makes mistakes, who despite being physically weaker than the rest of the crew and most certainly the alien, overcame with bravery and quick thinking. She didn't have to be perfect. I think that's relatable to everyone and it all makes her very much likable. Hollywood today is incompetent in comparison.

Most of all she played her role as that of a professional in a team with distributed fields of work. As it was a civilian ship, her job would under normal circumstances not be a prominent one, more like the type of protocol routine thing in the background, the administrative red tape lady. So the first conflict is a clash of professional interests, where the rest of the crew see the individual, personal, human side of things, whereas she has the systemic, distanced, regulative pov and position to uphold. It is an imminent, sudden, lonely and hard decision under pressure that suddenly exposes her to center stage within the team and to the audience. Way to introduce a character!

What a coincidence, @2:45, Sigourney talks about how the set pieces helped the actors with their jobs because of how real they were. And in the Alien: Romulus BTS interview with Cailee Spaeny, she said almost the exact same thing. 2 different actors playing the lead role in an Alien movie saying almost the exact same thing 45 years apart. Really speaks volumes about the sets of the movies and why its so iconic. Also @3:44, she never took out a "heroine playbook" and she's "never played a heroine role before" is why future films cannot replicate Alien - because Ripley is not a hero from the get-go. She was not promoted as one, or even hinted in the early part of the film; in fact, she came off as a Karen but turned out to be a hero. Apart from AvP, other films put the heroes front and center and we already expect Ripley to be the hero, so there is no unexpected-ness of the supposed side character being the hero in the end.

Sigourney Weaver is like my first early female hero that I love a lot. First screen for me I was a kid was terrifying couldn't sleep, I only think of Ripley to go to sleep LOL. Then she I rewatched it and then found myself a fan of Alien franchise, I love the xenomorphs too. When second movie came out my begged my parents to go see it, but they wouldn't let me, then my uncle cheeky understanding guy lend me a VHS that I can secretly watch. I get scared, tension and love all the characters, but the best parts are the Sigourney and the xenomorph.

I ruined the day. It burns my eyes. I read that it is a characteristic of some eyes that they suddenly light up. Ever since I admired Sigourney. And didn't I notice the narrowing of her eyes until now? Shines as they say: the sun shines through the clouds. I have loved the sun ever since. Made peace with the day. This was also given by Sigourney's mysterious power. Eternal May and June. Sigourney is blooming spring and summer.

I think it speaks to Sigourney's talent that the role of Ripley was originally created for a man. Also, I loved that Gal Gadot and Brie Larson paid homage to Sigourney at this year's Oscar ceremony, for she unquestionably opened the genre to woman in a manner that had never been done before.

@@thebigl156 The earliest draft of the script I've read -- one from when the title was still "STARBEAST" and all the characters were different -- states at the start that the cast of characters could be any gender. Said script was written well before Weaver was brought on for a screentest, so Ripley's gender wasn't decided upon because of Weaver - Ripley wasn't even a character in the early scripts.

She is indeed quite tall for an American woman, but she never was over six foot tall. In an 1989 interview in The Dallas Morning News, she said: "I am 5 foot 11 inches tall", which is around 180 cm. She is currently 5ft 10 1/4 tall (=178.4 cm).
