In some ways covers can be even more interesting to me when they come out of a void. I DO listen to music, but I haven't consistently listened to the radio or what's wildly popular since the early 2000s. Nor do I let streaming services serve me up random songs. Nothing against it at all, my brain just prefers to fixate on a few bands and go really deep with them rather than listen to a wide variety of stuff on a surface level. I find the majority of stuff through direct recommendations from friends, or the opening band at concerts, etc. I did find two of my very favorites (Andrew Bird and Cloud Cult) by randomly hearing them on the radio in 2007, though. I always liked The Offspring - not in my top 20 bands, but enough that I bought their albums and saw them live (and nearly died in the mosh pit because I am NOT built for that and it took me by surprise).
