The premise sounds almost slapstick-“cat person sneaks enormous dog into New York apartment that doesn’t allow them”-unless you know that for the narrator, the dog is a tragic inheritance: the devoted pet of a dear friend who has just taken his own life. In the throes of grief, under threat of eviction, and from the wise and wonderful pen of Sigrid Nunez, unfurls The Friend, winner of the 2018 National Book Award for fiction. Admired for her quiet wit, poignant prose, and sharp powers of observation, Nunez will be in conversation with Nena Torres, Director of the Latin American and Latino Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
This program was recorded on April 27, 2019.
