My mother was born in 1927, and was named after this singer. My grandfather was enthralled with her voice.

This is, hands down, my favorite recording of this piece!

I've never found Onegin dramtically interesting, but her prodigious technique and sumptuous voice were exceptional. The warm,velvet blanket analogy is quite accurate.

paulostroff99-As the only starless commenter-I should very much like to commend myself as well. Sigrid Onegin is a very great singer. Brava!

Beautiful voice and music somewhat tarnished by the romantic practices of the era

Everything should be appreciated within its context. How certain are you that the current practices are authentic and not influenced by the electronic era?
@oswaldwellman18356 жыл бұрын
Much dedicated research has been lavished on "authentic"performance, and portamento especially, is almost universally frowned on, even in romantic music. But there is room for opinion ,and my response was largely personal. Reproduction, whether acoustic, or electronic has no relevance.

I've been at the centre of such musical research and can assure you that more recently the same scholars are questioning their own previous statements. I'm not saying that Sigrid is authentic but don't be too sure the latest countertenor recording Orfeo is either! Characteristically I remember discussing recordings of vocal music by Mahler and Debussy where we have the singers who performed their works in the presence of the composers, occasionally with the composer accompanying them. Unashamed but tasteful use of portamento was the order of the day. Fast forward a few decades and it's indeed frowned on by the recording artists of the 70s, 80s etc (compare for example Mary Garden and Elly Ameling, both wonderful but so different. Ameling clearly refuses to use "vulgar" portamento. But Garden does and has the composer next to her so who's authentic? Our ears enjoy Ameling more but that's because we're used to her clean, flowing sound). Same happens with singers of Verdi's time. And as an early music specialist once told me, when the HIP movement started they were too afraid to deviate from what was in the manuscripts so everything had to be "clean" on the recording but this doesn't mean it was in Gluck's time!

We are all free to express an opinion. I have no time to waste on argument . Thank you.
