The limbus weren't treated right by the bhutias/namgyals because limbus were not closely attached to Sikkim history and politics. They were more so closer to Limbuwan and the namgyals took over Limbuwan and Gorkharajya Nepal also took over Limbuwan. Limbus were definitely there before Bhutias or Tibatiyaa but they were more so a minority compared to the Lepchas. Lepchas populated Sikkim by a vast demographic difference. Lepchas and Limbus were close because Limbuwan and Lepchaland was closer to each other and shared boundary and Limbus share much with Lepcha given the script is also similar to Lepcha because they both share historical ties in the distant past due to interboundary relation at West Sikkim. Not all Sikkim. Namgyals used Lepcha language more so than Limbu yakthung bhasa because it was fairly common and used. Darjeeling deed of grant wasn't written in limbu.( It was in hindustandi and Lepcha because British India supported hindustani and it's history of British Raj starts with Bengal and Hindu states and also included southeast Asia as Burma and Thailand.) This shows bhutias namgyals used lepchas to make a stand that showed legitimate closeness with aboriginal indigenous Lepchas. This wasn't because limbus didn't agree with Sikkim rule and defied the namgyals and most limbus chose to side with Nepal Gorkharajya this was mostly because Lepchas inhabited Sikkim and were the majority and Bhutias wanted to make Lepchas happy so they could take over the people over their command and make the Dynasty easier to control it's majority Lepcha subjects. You can see even in documentary of Satyajit Ray the Buddha statue is written in Lepcha script below the statue of sakyamuni. Limbu yakthung do have a history of Sikkim but it's more with Sikkim taking over Limbuwan and taking control of the minority population of Limbu who had close ties with Lepchas in West Sikkim. And yes the limbus were there before bhootiyas came from Tibet.

In fact the limbus (then known as tshong people in sikkim) and lepchas are believed to be the original inhabitants of the region ( not later immigrants) . KALIMPONG DISTRICT AND HALF SIKKIM IS LEPCHA KINGDOM. Whole EASTERN NEPAL was under SIKKIM KINGDOM until GORKHA KINGDOM CAPTURED this area. With respect to some gaps in the information given ..some corrections: Also- NOTE- this was originally a reply given to some other person (by me ofcourse 😅). If my words sound a bit harsh - due apologies. Was merely stating the facts as-is. Anyways here it is:- Firstly- Tribals/ethnic lines cannot be difined by borders- There are many Gorkhali Tribes like Magar Rais and Limbus( who along with Lepchas are considered one of the autochthons of Sikkim although not highlighted much due to Political reasons) if you want proof of it please visit western Sikkim and see what tribal language they speak besides Bhutia and Lepcha. On the opposite side there are many Lepchas and Bhutias and Lepchas living in Eastern Nepal in the region Known as Limbuwan and are considered one of the ethnic groups of Nepal. This is just like how you find Khasi Garo Kachari , Mizo, Manipuri, Tripuri some Burmese tribes and many other people form Northeast India inhabit the northeast , east and south-eastern regions of Bangladesh. Naturally the are considered natives of that country too. A better example would be -Punjabis, Gujjars, Sindhis, Jatts etc inhabiting Pakistan-India...but this is better understood, well, because- Partition.🤷🏻‍♂️ Again let me stress- ethnic lines cannot be difined by national borders. That's why y9u have more Azerbaijanis living in Iran than on Azerbaijan itself 🤷🏻‍♂️ Secondly- Along with the above mentioned Gorkhali tribes, there were many others who settled( giving a soldier land in the conquered areas was the norm then-"jagir" understandably) here during the Sikkim- Gorkha wars, were half of Sikkim was taken and ruled by the Gorkha kingdom that is until the British intervened. Thirdly- It is true many were brought by British but a more practical reason was to get them some good doh/moola/taka/Paisa/rupaiyah/ "tax-revenue". The Bhutia- Lepcha ruling class ( The Limbus were slowly ousted from the ruling class- because- Non- acceptance of Buddhism and even those who converted to Buddhism had converted back to their animistic religion- "Yumiasm", This was possible because of a Limbu reformer- preist with the name of "Srizonga/Sirijunga Te-ongsi - Meaning Srizonga the reincarnated" . This got the moks were converting the Limbus so pissed that they complained to the "Choyal" who then ordered his murder. 😅This led (naturally) to a limbu rebellion which was brutally suppressed along with Limbu language and traditions there was second such uprising later on which was again suppressed- brutally) Anyways coming back to the above issue- the Bhutia-Lepcha elite were hesitant but seeing the increase in revenue (with the tilling of the land- increased labour force) they didn't complain much later 🤷🏻‍♂️. Thirdly- There's a fort called "Magarjung" below Sukhia in Darjeeling region which in Tibetan/Bhutia or any Tibetic language translates to Magar(Gorkhali tribe)- Fort. (Go figure- also a lesson - history didn't start in 1600's) If you need help - check Magar- Bhutia wars Lastly- the ethnic groups defined here are atleast to my understanding more for ethnographic purposes as most of the people group described above (excepting some) frequently intermarry. Let me give you and example- i have cousins who are Rai,Newar, Tamang,Lepcha, Bhutia, Gurung, Sunwar, Sherpa, Magar, Chettri etc all across the Nepali (ethnic spectrum) and this is not a new thing- its been happening since "dadaji ka time sae" also - caveat- not form Sikkim- but same ethnic group- so🤷🏻‍♂️ I admire your understanding of the "history of Sikkim/Su-him/Su-khim" but I'd suggest a deeper understanding of history both in terms of Chronology & Complexity". I hope I have been able to help in your understanding of the subject. Do forgive for any mistakes made while writing 🙂

Lepchas immigrated to ilam and also coined the place name because they fled to present day nepal because they were persecuted. The history of lepchas in Bhutan is clear. They are indigenous to western bhutan prior to ngalop invasion because the drukpas cant tell when the lepchas inhabited bhutan clearly for this reason solely its not that ambiguos as well as after bhutanese invaded sikkim and took lepcha slaves to western bhutan in samtsi as in this way they were also immigrated. Its semi ambiguos in bhutan.

Western sikkim history is unclear on thapa population and they havent been marked as indigenous. Though thapa magaric peoples have history in sikkim the speculation is strong as the lepchas in bhutan or nepal. Thapa population in sikkim is ambiguos and no origin story that has proper sikkim of thapa magaric origin story. Whereas their homeland in nepal is clearly indicated politically as well as culturally geographically prior to any invasions and upheavals. Needs more study as to magar people homeland and origins.

To group limbu rai thapa tribes as gorkhali is a misnomer. If its not -gorkhali tribes is a political term that has its history in nepali indigenous population who lost their war with gorkha forces and gave in to assimilate and forge a new identity that was created shaped within nepal around the kathmandu valley and the subjugated forces. Gorkha identity is of nepal and not of Sikkim. It has no origin in native homegrown Sikkimese politics or cultural geographical identity. Most gorkha history and culture and identification is found in nepal. While its true that gorkha people from nepal have a history in sikkim and darjeeling. There is no clear consensus on why rai limbu mahar and thapa people be grouped as gorkhali tribes. Thats only well recieved in nepal. Further these tribes have identified more so as Sikkimese and have not identified with Gorkha ethnicity. Darjeeling people just consifered themselves as hill people and the history of gorkha identity is a new concept that evolved during bengali rule in darjeeling in politics. Although 89% percent population is directly descendended from nepal. The diverse markets and british rule in darjeeling have them just be called as darjeeling people and have assimilated well during british rule. Morevor those who had a distaste for gorkha rule in nepal thr indigenous people of nepls as rai kiranti magar thapa limbu population arrived to sikkim and british darjeeling keeping intact their religion culture identity as rai kiranti magar gurung and not as gorkha. They couldnt foget how they lost their homeland in present day nepal and this headstrong population have somewhat preserved their identity by removing any gorkha influence and possibility of eroding their native culture ina distant foreign land safe from gorkha conquests but that too changed but still hold on to their diverse identities

@@akaziaku1762 limbus came under the influences of nepali/gorkhali later on. Ancestral Limbu or yakthung, didn't even know the concept or word called as gorkhali or nepali. They identified themselves as yakthung and spoke in their own language, it is after the arrival of Gorkha or Khas nepalis, the limbus were heavily influenced by the latter arrivals. Today less than half of yakthung(limbu) population can speak in their own language, it is slowly getting extinct and may probably get extinct because it's spoken by not many families. Today they identify as nepali but history is proof of the kingdom of yakthung people called as limbuwan which was attacked by gorkhas and the gorkha king took over them, the war ended after the defeat of limbuwan with the treaty that limbuwan would come under the control of gorkha rajya. Also don't forget after the conquest of limbuwan, the gorkha kingdom came after sikkim. If Britishers hadn't arrived and intervened, bhutia and lepchas would have had the same fate as limbus. And about 80 percentage of territory of limbuwan is in nepal by gorkha limbuwan salt water treaty 1774 A.D .Now limbuwan area is limited up to Arun river to mechi river. The region of limbuwan was divided between two nation .So limbu of sikkim can't be included in Nepali. Correct this.!After 18 century majority nepali communities arrived in sikkim after gorkha invasion . Please rectify that sikkim composed of 4 community:lepcha ,bhutia ,limboo and Nepali. Due to political reason intentionally limbu are placed in nepali category in sikkim ,but history doesn't say so.

Nepalis flooded Sikkim due to the policy of the British to subjugate the king of Sikkim. The Nepalis were considered more loyal to the British. This is how Sikkim ended up with majority Nepali population. When the king of Sikkim wanted to address this issue in 1975, the large Nepali population of Sikkim engineered a coup with the help of Indian army which led to the illegal merger of Sikkim with India without the consent of the king and the real natives of Sikkim.

With respect to your writing ..some corrections: Firstly- Tribals/ethnic lines cannot be difined by borders- There are many Gorkhali Tribes like Magar Rais and Limbus( who along with Lepchas are considered one of the autochthons of Sikkim although not highlighted much due to Political reasons) if you want proof of it please visit western Sikkim and see what tribal language they speak besides Bhutia and Lepcha. Naturally the are considered natives of that country too A better example would be -Punjabis, Gujjars, Sindhis, Jatts etc inhabiting Pakistan-India...but this is better understood, well, because- Partition.🤷🏻‍♂️ Again let me stress- ethnic lines cannot be difined by national borders. This led (naturally) to a limbu rebellion which was brutally suppressed along with Limbu language and traditions there was second such uprising later on which was again suppressed- brutally) Anyways coming back to the above issue- the Bhutia-Lepcha elite were hesitant but seeing the increase in revenue (with the tilling of the land- increased labour force) they didn't compain much later 🤷🏻‍♂️. Let me give you and example- i have cousins who are Rai,Newar, Tamang,Lepcha, Bhutia, Sherpa, Magar, Chettri etc all across the Nepali (ethnic spectrum) and this is not a new thing- its been happening since "dadaji ka time sae" also - caveat- not form Sikkim- but same ethnic group- so🤷🏻‍♂️ I admire your understanding of the "history of Sikkim/Su-him/Su-khim" but I'd suggest a deeper understanding of history both in terms of Chronology & Complexity". I hope I have been able to help in your understanding of the subject. Do forgive for any mistakes made while writing 🙂

Nepali tribes were in Sikkim from start of human settlement in east himalaya ( today's east nepal, Sikkim, darjeeling). Called kirat. Nepali is recent term. Non kirati Nepali ( indo aryan, tibbetan) migrated later. But after living in himalaya for centuries as himalayan.. N Nepali had no role in annexation. It's self made history.

@@rajivsarmah8413 Where are the mythological "kirats" today?? The Bhutias and Lepchas, the natives of Sikkim, Bhutan and Darjeeling have nothing in common with the Nepalis. The Nepalis did invade and occupy parts of Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal for few years before the locals took the help of the British to kick out the Nepalis. Later on the British actively encouraged Nepali migration to Sikkim against the wishes of the King of Sikkim leading to Nepalis outstripping the indigenous Sikkimese. Nepalis tried same tactics in Bhutan for which Bhutan kicked out all Nepalis majority of whom settled in North Bengal. And from your surname it's clear you are not a Gorkha but a Madhesi whose land was gifted to Nepal by the British for Nepal's help in putting down the sepoy mutiny by sepoys from UP Bihar.

@@agonnoga6100 bhutia r not ab origin of sikkim. Sikkim share same terrain with hills of east nepal not tibbet. it was same limbuwan with today's far east nepal till tibbetan divide limbuwan. They migrated from tibbet in 13 th century n more after formation of sikkim in 1642. The treaty is called lepcha, bhutia( tibbetan), n limboo treaty ( a kirati tribe) . Real native of sikkim r lepcha, limboo n eastern mangar( mangar have three sub tribes). It recorded in even earlier history of Sikkim. N lepcha r more closer to kirat in terms of language, race, custom( except imported buddhism from bhutia).. Even lepcha, limboo script is almost same. N Sikkim itself is a limboo word derived from. Limboo words su khyim. Lepcha used to call the region mayal lyang, limboos called it chungjung. Lepcha called kanchanjangha( modified by bhutia) as kanchenjungha n kirat called it seseylungma historically.. N limboo, khambu( rai title given by gorkha rajpoot king), sunuwar r as much similar as sonowal kachari, bodo, dimasa to each other. So come with who r kirat n debate about this part of himalaya. N lepcha n limboo had co existed from thousand yrs in today's far east nepal, Sikkim, darjeeling.
