Sikorsky s58 start up.

Start up from the Sikorsky S58 on Lelystad museum Aviodrome in Holland. Including flight and return. Start up and flight from a rare helicopter. Only 2 left in the world in flying condition.
Listen to the sound of te piston engine.
I didn't cut any of the material, because its a very rare happening to hear and see this type of helicopter.

The Radial, carbureted piston engines in those things do pack a whollop! Rivals any turbo-shaft engine!

there is some still left flying mainly in the US in piston engine form as the S-58C or the H-34 UH-34 as some that are flying have been converted to turbine power. but still used in the US for cherry tree drying, airshows and various lifting and utility tasks. but they are still around.

There's like 5 piston S-58s used in brewster washington for cherry drying, along with YL-37, and a few others, there are a lot of S-58T (turbine versions) that are used for heavy lifting, the most popular one being "screamin mimi", the helicopter used in the tv show Riptide.

Het heeft even tijd nodig om op te warmen, maar wat loopt zo'n radiale motor toch prachtig rond! Hoor trouwens op 2:40 hoe de rotor wordt geschakeld van de koppeling naar directe aandrijving. Klinkt net als naar z'n twee schakelen!

Visited Wiesbaden in 1972 - Americans were amazed that our S58 (Wessex) had jet engines.

Westland had a license agreement with Sikorski aircraft to produce their designs but also to modify them if needed. They built the S-58 Choctaw as the Wessex but fitted Turbine engines which were lighter and more fuel efficient.
