Fun thing I had learned back when I was training wing chun, took me a while to get, but my instructor was trying to get me to offbalance the opponent using jut sau. Eventually it clicked in my head that you jut in the direction where their feet aren’t supporting in a downward angle.

That's a SUPER important point, "The techniques don't matter, it's the principle." This is the defeat of so many martial artists who keep insisting that the exact movement from a form is how it should be applied. Tai Chi push hands, Karate's Sanchin kata, Hung Gar's tiger crane form, and many others all have martial applications, but it's more about the principles of balance, structure, momentum, etc. and how they're applied in combat.
@mightymeatmonsta
@mightymeatmonsta 3 жыл бұрын
That doesn't apply to wing chun in any way, shape or form because traditional wing chun is the only system that uses 10 concepts as its guideline or outline to how the system should run properly. It applies to the others, who use TECHNIQUE to dictate response. But wing chun, only traditonal wing chun, uses those ten concepts, which must be used all together at the same time, to allow the system to run optimally. Every other way just weakens the wing chun.

@@mightymeatmonsta Maybe I explained poorly? It sounds we're in agreement, as I'm saying that the principle/concept is what's important NOT the technique, and that this applies to all martial arts. It's not a shortcoming of any martial art but of the person practicing it. I've trained many students who became fixated with using a specific set of movements for a specific kind of attack instead of applying the concepts it is trying to teach, and that is the problem I'm referring to. If I'm misunderstanding your comment, please let me know as I love all martial arts and would be happy to hear more about this from your perspective :)

@@sway71 No, you're confused. I said that the techniques ARE crucial to the effectiveness of the system, and that they must be used properly! Even if you are off by an inch or so, if your opponent is extremely fast (say, for example, you are fighting another wing chun guy), his attack might get through because the techniques were designed to be used with NO force, just deflection, and for this to be achieved, you must have proper technique form and application, and use it in conjunction with the angled footwork and body rotation, and ALL TEN CONCEPTS AT ONCE! Otherwise, the technique will collapse, and his attack will get through! This is the only way that wing chun works optimally!!
@mightymeatmonsta
@mightymeatmonsta 3 жыл бұрын
A perfect example of this is the modified system. It uses a 70/30 stance that sends their energy BACKWARD, instead of FORWARD, as it should. So if someone enters in quickly and attacks, you can effectively JAM his techniques with your forward movement! This will also send him stepping backward, which makes it extremely difficult to put up any type of offense, when you are constantly on defense!! You see what I mean about technique form and application??

@@mightymeatmonsta Thank you for sharing :) In way it seems like my perspective is a bit different. I've been training Chinese and Korean martial arts for about 20 years now and the building blocks of the arts that I've trained (what one might call techniques, since English doesn't have as many words for these things) were drilled into my head a long time ago. By this I mean strikes, blocks, locks, trips, throws, etc. The "techniques" that people get too hung up on are things like applications or "self defense" techniques. If your master/instructor teaches you a series of blocks, grabs, and strikes in response to one attack or another, there will be principles behind it, so just memorizing a set of moves will cause you to miss out on most of what they're trying to teach. Every technique was built from a situation handled using a concept/principle. Interestingly enough, most martial arts end up coming to the same conclusion in my experience, although the solutions may be different in certain ways. It's a lot like math problems, where there may be one answer, but the ways to get there are endless. For example, that "jamming" technique you mentioned is based off a stratagem of Sun Tzu and can be seen applied in Tai Chi using a strong balanced stance and powerful frames with your arms, as well as in Taekwondo where they instead use their lead foot while hopping. This is not to say that you should mix and match, but that you should know what the purpose of the technique is. If you don't have the foundations of your art and the knowledge of what a technique is trying to accomplish, it becomes brittle to the point where small changes such as the opponent's height, stance or footwork can ruin its effectiveness.

Totally agree! The part on circular movement was a hidden gem as well :) In fact, not only is it hard to resist circular pressure (mainly due to the force being perpendicular to your limb coupled with the constantly changing direction), but this is also true of balance! They pull/push the opponent into a rotation in Shuai Jiao and Judo all the time when trying to off balance an opponent.

Hi Adam, I keep hearing there is no wing chun in JKD. Is this true? I didn’t think Bruce “phased it out” entirely, is this misinformation?
@mightymeatmonsta
@mightymeatmonsta 3 жыл бұрын
There is very little MODIFIED wing chun in JKD! It uses only six of ten concepts and boxing derivatives, which are inherently flawed and stiff! So is modified wing chun! Modified wing chun is flawed and stiff as well! So, the more systems you add to your second-rate JKD, the more flaws and stiffness you add, as well having to remember close to 100 techniques, and hope that you pick the right one when the time comes!! TWC has only SIX single-hand techniques that we use four ways (left to right, right to left, in and out), which makes for TWENTY FOUR responses to any upper body attack, way more than any boxing derivative! This is what I mean about flexibility! It's the ability of the system to handle ALL systems effectively, and only traditional wing chun can do that!

@@axelstone3131 Everything I learned is taught by Grandmasters, such as William Chung and Cho Shu Tin, and other masters who know the complete traditional system. I even use some of Wong Shun Leung's system, that lacks the proper footwork, because he learned how to use sensitivity more and become more in tune with his opponent.
@axelstone3131
@axelstone3131 3 жыл бұрын
@@mightymeatmonsta I get that but what are your credentials as in, how long have you been doing wing chun for? Have you ever had to use it in a real situation? Bruce lee may not have known the whole system, but the guy is widely regarded as exceptional by people like Adam, and many other people who knew him and saw him fight. You don’t have a legacy like him by not being something special. I really don’t think Bruce not knowing the whole system really matters since whatever he came up with worked very well for him. Also he did train with fook yeung for years, which I didn’t know and I don’t think many people did until Adam mentioned this in one of his videos a few years back. Bruce more than likely did know the full system before he died but it’s also well known nobody knew exactly what he knew only he did. I also don’t believe JKD was/is inferior at all. 99% of people can’t even do what he could do and Dan Inosanto said that in a video on KZbin from a few years back.
@mightymeatmonsta
@mightymeatmonsta 3 жыл бұрын
@@axelstone3131 It DOES matter! Bruce could NEVER EVER beat ANY wing chun master of the time, including then-master William Cheung, Cho Shu Tin (both traditional), and Wong Shun Leung (modified)! The only reason why his system worked for him, for the most part, despite the MAJOR FLAWS and stiffness in BOTH modified wing chun and the second-rate, JKD, is because he had almost superhuman speed and POWER, which he learned from modified wing chun! No, he only knew 2/3rds of the crappy, incomplete, stiff and rigid modified system. He did not know the proper footwork, proper stance (using and maintaining the triangle, and used only six of ten concepts, which added said flaws and stiffness. For the system to work most effectively and efficiently, you must know the ENTIRE traditional system, which is complete! As for JKD, it is a crappy, second-rate system that only Bruce Lee could use effectively because of his said physical prowess and power! Because it uses only very little MODIFIED, incomplete wing chun, and extremely flawed, stiff and rigid boxing derivatives, which add flaws and stiffness to the system. And the more systems you add, the more flaws and stiffness you add, and the more techniques you must learn and master! This could be up to one hundred techniques!! This leaves you with many techniques to choose from, and you have to hope that you chose the right one!! This is why traditional is best, the most complete out of any sports-oriented system, including boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, karate, tkd, jiu jitsu, and even JKD!! It has real scenario training along with real wing chun grappling (which uses all ten concepts just as the standup does!), locks and throws, sweeps, arm bars, palm strikes, four very effective punches, knees, weapons training and defense, and multiple opponent training, which NONE of those crappy, sports-oriented martial arts do NOT train!!

In my humble opinion wing Chun is a weapon system. Similar to escrima etc. I've always viewed it as that so the things he's sharing I understood. I've always been partial to weapons based systems that translate to and from empty hands. I see the Butterfly blades and short staff in wing Chun and I was only instructed in slt because my original instructor in the fma said it was the best for me since I'm ambidextrous. I love this guy's take on Wing Chun. Awesome

Sure you will! If you use the techniques properly along with the angled step and body rotation towards the attack (which not only allows you to see the attack but pulls you away as well), you will out of reach of his counter, and far enough away to avoid any entanglement (grappling or the clinch), so you can enter in quickly and safely, and finish the fight quickly. You also have control of one of the arms and one leg (if possible), which makes you able to determine his next move through sensitivity, and control or break his structure. Wing chun has way faster hands than any other system! What other system can through 4 to 8 punches per second??? No other system but wing chun!!

Technique doesn't matter? So a sloppy technique, that FAILS, doesn't matter? Sorry, I disagree! All techniques matter and must be done PROPERLY, otherwise the technique will fail, and the opponent's attack WILL GET THROUGH! Wing chun is one system that proper technique and application are CRUCIAL to the success of the system!

Agreed if a technique is done correctly and with intent then there's no reason it should not work
@mightymeatmonsta
@mightymeatmonsta 3 жыл бұрын
@@siwal69 Yes, this is even more important in traditional wing chun, a system that runs solely on ten concepts, which not only dictate proper response to any attack, but take out all initial flaws found in ALL boxing derivatives, such as boxing, kickboxing, karate, tkd, muay thai, jiu jitsu, and even in the hybrid system, JKD! Without this, the system becomes flawed and stiff, just as in modified wing chun, which uses only about six of ten concepts. This is why it is flawed and stiff, as Bruce Lee mentioned. But what also makes the system work extremely well is the angled footwork, coupled with the body rotation towards the attack, which allows you to stay far enough away, out of reach of his counter. This also stops you getting tangled up inside (grappling or clinching), and allows for a quick and SAFE entrance in, allowing for a quick finish of the fight. You see why I question his responses? He KNOWS the system, no doubt, but his INTERPRETATION of certain parts of it are inaccurate!
