Silat is from South East Asia, it practice in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, south Thailand, Brunei and Filipina. Becouse Indonesia is the largest nation with huge diversity, Silat has so many style and school here. The martial arts is fluid and influence each other back then. Including South Style kungfu called kuntao, later called silat kuntao. Although Indonesia is the biggest breeding ground (include many hidden style never been exposed), It cannot unilaterally claimed from Indonesia or Malay. We share our heritage together. Its been practised long before modern country exist.

Man how do you practise this enough to get good at it without getting serious injuries? I study anatomy and just looking at these moves is crazy they are designed to incapacitate and kill your opponent within seconds. I would really like to study this though for self defense purposes.

John Tembo Most of silat style(there more than 200 style) are created by old kingdom war commanders (panglima perang) of every sultanate so, it's actually are designed for war..some for the style are for ceremony(look like dance but can be used in fight, not very practical)..

Some of the move are good for movie or demonstration, but majority of silat I learn they always told to spar light sparring everyday to improve the basic punch and kick hard sparring once a month this in the village but on the city they work toward more Kata than sparring

Paul Hannes : They just show you how to apply the technique. All martial arts will do the same things when they practice or perform. I often watch karate, taekwondo, judo, and even boxing. In the actual, Silat movement is like a wave. There is no ending, the reason why The Opponent looks static is to show the whole movement of Pencak Silat. Please watch Merantau or The Raid 1 & 2 and you will get more image of Silat movement.

And I became much faster and much more fluent by training Silat, even in my Muay Thay/Boran techniques. But there are over 1400 styles of Silat and some are mostly for show. But u have never known if u didnt research that there are practioners silat ever joined in the UFC, for example Cheick Kongo. Even there's someone who used silat at the early competion of UFC. It happened at UFC 2. He is the world champion of silat at the 90's. He come from Spain. He won at the first time. But the second fight, he was disqualified because he used deathly technique of silat which is forbidden in UFC. So, according to him, the association of world silat, especially in europe, suggested to the silat practitioner should not join UFC anymore.
