Fantastic! I've been practicing martial arts for more than 20 years now and I have to say that these are some of the best moves I've ever seen! The simplicity and rawness of Silat is what makes it the most efficient self defense system ever. Thank you for uploading!

The more I watch Maul a SSBD, the more I'm convinced that it's the best shit I've ever seen. The moves look very fluent and beautiful, but also very effective and deadly. It something I watch and imagine how it would go down in a street fight, and I can actually see it being very effective. No martial arts, or training is going to make you invincible, but I could imagine this would be about as good as you could hope for.

I learned a little Kali/Silat from a poor peasant when I was in the Philippines. Before there were Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, there was Srivijaya Empire and then Madjapahit Empire. The warriors of these empire practiced basically the same fighting art which is blade oriented. Just observe this fighting art from Brunei and compare it to Pekiti-Tirsia Kali from the Philippines and you will notice the great similarities of movements and techniques...

Guru Maul is truly one of the most highly skilled players that I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. I have trained in the arts for 40 years and have seen many types of instructors he simply moves with an educated motion and is very refined. to comment on a comment prior to mine I must say "must one put there hand in the fire to see if it will burn?" Take time to think before you speak(with all do respect).

This teacher has beautiful fluidity and grace. You can see he enjoys training and helping people of much, much lesser skill levels than he. I wish he had a school in Florida. The one thing I nver was able to understand, is where do Silat people get their power in a regular punch or open hand strike from? And how do they prefer to train to increase their hitting power? Also, great camera work, Marco. Very interesting video. High quality!

Thank you sakti21. What a wonderful answer because I am thinking right at this very moment of accepting an invitation to learn Pencak Silat from a teacher here in Miami, Florida. And since I always seemed to have much more power in my open hand/palm than with a boxers type punch with a closed fist, I am very happy to hear that "striking angles" will play a part in getting me to be a good striker. My hope is to learn an art that will let me use an open palm as I get much more power that way.

well, so many silat schools here and each of us have different method of training, but yes that training is widely used here. but instead of sitting down, you "sit" on an invicible chair. age does not rise any problems in learning some art. in fact, many people here join silat at age of 30 to 50s. of course most join not for the martial art but for the cardiovascular exercise, but some still kicks harder than youngsters. thank you for the compliment, sir, i do hope i can help

People think that silat is nothing because it is something new. That is what makes it dangerous, Silat was there for more than 1000 years which only stayed in Malaysia and Indonesia. It was used to fight of the Chinese and Engish, the way they use their techniques in Silat is unknown and the attack can come from anywhere.

Best way to find out if this or any martial art works for real is to go dojo-crashing. That's the old-school way of finding a teacher. Act like an interested student, then bum rush the head instructor. If you get your ass kicked, then he can teach you something.

Right on every point. If I'm not mistaken, the Dog Brothers practice this art, and they are the most hardcore reality fighters out there. So there's got to be some value to it, at least on the weapons side. A lot of this is kind of impractical, but still very cool. Dan Inosanto said, "10% of what I do is for self-defense, 90% is for self-perfection"

it's no surprise to the similarities in south east Asian martial arts. Brunei , Malaysian , Indonesian and Javanese Silat are probably very close cousins or the fighting ancestor to the many styles of Arnis , Escrima and Kali of the Philippines ; mainly due to the migrating tribes of the Majapahit empire no doubt . Great arts to mix n match with .

In southern Philippines, there are groups of people for whom fighting is a way of life. Not only do they kill soldiers, but they dismember their victims. They exist even today. In fact, they cut the head off a Malaysian soldier in March 2013. The silat you see here is influenced by that culture. Yes, people still use these techniques in fights. And the winners don't make a habit of uploading details of their fights. Maybe because your culture is tame, you can't imagine real fights to the death

Maybe it's a cultural difference. Even Malaysian Chinese are not aware that when their Malay friends use silat on them, it is the play version. We use the flat of our feet and not the edge, block with our fleshy forearms and not strike with bone, our locks stop when we get a firm grip instead of going all the way and tearing muscle. See v=ryN2ypREsIs How easy it is to just rip out that arm from its socket. v=vNnDuiG0Y7I Which of those moves you think is OK to fool around with? I'd like to know

those replies might give you some image on how you deal with weapons -- silat style. true, my silat school also teach us to get on safe side first before engaging to next tech. but the essential part is there: SAFETY FIRST. so, you don't necessarily disarm or restrain the weapon, you could just use that against the attacker himself, or lock him, or better: finish him immediately before the knife reaches your skin without locks or disarm techs. doable if you have knowledge and sufficient training

You should take a look at WEKAF competitions that employ a variety of FMA systems. Since you seem so concerned whether or not esoteric and art-oriented martial arts systems hold up in a non-staged environment. Practitioners of Silat have their own competitions as well, where non-staged, non cooperative, but regulated tournaments occur.

Fight is not only about legal or illegal techniques. Is is about ability to create oportunities and adapt to changing situation. It is about being calm in fight. This cannot be developed by drills and training with compliant partners. It can be developed only by sparring or fighting - BY THE EXPERIENCE. So I have doubts if he can hadle himself well (especially against no bum opponent).
@jjs3890
@jjs3890 6 жыл бұрын
@@cynik75 Disagree. There is no way you're going to spare eye, throat, groin attacks with breaks and dislocations. There are methods for safe sparing but not the same. The techniques and strategies of folate have been battle proven for centuries in actual combat. In my opinion, knowing both cambt and sport methods provides the best well rounded self defense. Ability to fight or destroy the attacker given the proper use of force.
@cynik75
@cynik75 6 жыл бұрын
But we stiil do not have answer if he (or his students) can fight. Theres is no trace of non complaint training methods in Mauls vids. No trace of any king of sparring. No trace of proof that he or one of his students have ever tried one of his techniques on seriously resisting trained opponent. And fact that hundreds years ago somebody has killed somebody on battlefield is meaningless in this case. And the case is: CAN HE OR HIS STUDENTS FIGHT?
@jjs3890
@jjs3890 6 жыл бұрын
@@cynik75 well if some one or people try to kill him then we can find out. As a former police officer and US Marine, I would easily put my money on people training this discipline in a life and death situation than any sport fighting at which apparently provides "proof". Combat and sport are nothing close to the same thing.

These fighting styles are good for maintaining a certain fitness level. In real world street fights the attack isn't slow and choreographed. The attack is often quick and unpredictable. And a lot of times you are in a confined space or have limited movement because of innocent bystanders. Plus you're not trying to mess up your clothes by rolling around on the ground. But good training video though.
