It was when browsing through KZbin one day that I came across and ad for this game. Intrigued by the unique, ethereal music, I installed what would become a work of art that I became deeply inspired by. The first few minutes of playing were spent getting oriented with the in-game environment. Most aspects of the game page were introduced at once, like a monocolor whirlwind - I must clarify, however, that the initial experience is not overwhelming and frankly quite fascinating. The main mechanics of the game are straightforward and very similar to other clicker games. The gray-scale art style, however, unveiled a special part of my heart: the untapered strokes seem to subtly foreshadow certain themes of the game, and the delicate use of darkness and monocolor shading sets a fitting tone for the story. What truly makes Alter Ego an unforgettable experience is what we can learn from the story’s progressions. At first, I wasn’t very flattered by the personality assessments given in the first few chapters, which resembled the countless simple tests I’ve seen on random websites. However, the story quickly evolves to an introspective exploration of the dynamics between oneself, the world, and varying life paths. The questions propounded as well as the statements delivered quickly propelled me to join Es in this captivating journey towards discovering one’s self, examining one’s interpretations of the world, and finding a precious balance between treacherous extremities. I would have never anticipated that a game would unveil inspirations and guidance that are otherwise difficult to come by in life. Perhaps it’s because I initially thought of these tests nonchalantly, but opening up to them and giving the choices my honest thought actually helped produce some valuable interpretations and lessons that would forever alter my perspectives - for the better, I’m sure. Allow me to hereby present my sincere appreciation for the developers and designers behind Alter Ego. With only a small team of less than a dozen people, they are able to deliver such a well-conceived, intricate piece of art that would go on to impact many more people internationally, helping them find their own directions in this fast-moving world.
