@SinisterCinemaReviews when I was on vacation with my family in Florida about a week or so ago now, I watched this movie for the second time ever because, I honestly had never seen the film until, my cousin Caleb who loves the movie and knows I love horror movies said “Have you ever seen The Silence of the Lambs.” I said I had heard of it mostly because, it’s so ingrained in pop culture to this day. I of course, for the most part really only heard about Anthony Hopkins and his most famous lines such as “I had a therapist try to psychoanalyze me once, I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.” I had never heard about Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill until, I saw the movie for the first time and all I could think of was “Holy Fuck! This guys way scarier than Hannibal Lecter in my opinion.” Especially the whole bit where he puts the nipple rings on and turns into a transgender male, wow that scene creeps me out every time I see it. I don’t know why but, that scene for some reason sends shivers down my back every time I see it. That and the “Put the lotion in the FUCKING BASKET!”” Scene there’s several scenes with other than that with Buffalo Bill that definitely creep me out more than anything with Hannibal Lecter personally.

Not nearly enough horror films or western films are ever nominated for Oscars. Hereditary deserved at the very least a Best Actress for Toni Collette.

Literally was talking about this movie last week. I have always said that though Hannibal was creepy, Buffalo Bill to me was the scarier one. That voice is iconic, and I quote him just as much as I quote Hannibal Lecter......maybe even more. Totally agree both performances were outstanding. Very Cool and thought-provoking review. 😎

This film is a thriller/horror on its surface, but I really see it as a feminist film. Clarice is a huge female hero, very low key, just like Ripley in the Alien films. That's my read, anyway. All the men failed, and only a woman could solve the problem. Hannibal recognizes Clarice's female power, and how she'll be the only one to stop Bill. It separates this film from all the other Hannibal projects

This is a good critique on the film, its a female power movie. I think another reason Levine's portrayal is forgotten is because he portrayed a trans sexual brutal killer. His character gave a girl I dated nightmares. I always thought the real creep was Dr Chilton.

Great discussion, Jason. This is a classic crime drama with some strong horror elements. Terrific performances. Hopkins won the Academy award for this performance, which is super rare due to the type of film this is. The Academy rarely recognizes these types of movies. I would put season 1 of HBO's True Detective on the same level with Silence Of The Lambs. True detective season 1 absolutely blew me away. It was so amazing. BTW, what happened to your mic? Your audio quality has been really good lately but for this video the audio is not good. Love your stuff man! ❤️... Tom

I have very mixed feelings about this one. Its iconic, absolutely no question about it, but Its one of those films though that I don't really enjoy, and its hard to say why - nothing to do with the subject matter, or the performances, I just...I don't know. It feels very operatic, theres a sense of incredible melodrama to it which isnt my thing, maybe? Is it a horror movie? I think it has horror elements, but I would put it in the same category as a film like Psycho, or Don't Go In The House broadly speaking (I know there are huge differences) - its a serial killer movie rather than a straight out horror movie. As for Hopkins's performance? My honest opinion is he got the award for his career rather than for that role specifically, much like Pacino did for Scent of a Woman. It is a good performance, of course, maybe his best, certainly one of them, but...I preferred Brian Cox's take on the character. Now. Cox's portrayal would not have suited this film at all - it was too cold, too low key, it required someone who wasnt afraid to overdo it and Hopkins did that and he did it very fucking well. My favourite portrayal of Lecter is the TV series, hands down. Jody Foster as Clarice? Absolutely - shes always good and in this she was brilliant. As for Ted Levine? I absolutely agree. He should have had a lot more recognition for the film, he was amazing as a serial killer. I think a lot of the problem was the transvestite/transsexual aspect of the role created a bit of a backlash among those communities at that time. Also, of course, which I don't really get, the character was thought to be gay by some people - there was nothing gay about him that I could tell, certainly wanting to be a woman doesnt make a guy gay. It has been noted though that Demme's next film was Philadelphia, which some believe was his response to the criticism he received, in part. As I say, I don't know - there is nothing wrong with the film, at all, and yet for some reason its not one that I enjoy, as I said. Something about the style of it I think, the melodrama, the slightly over the top quality to some of the characters, etc. It sounds fucking dumb, but I think I may have liked it more without the Oscars - Oscars can make a film seem better than it is, or can politicise it in various ways, it just makes a film into something that has nothing to do with the film itself. Having said that, it is one of the most memorable films Ive ever seen, and it is one that I absolutely think is iconic.

Great content! I'd just recommend upgrading your microphone, and you'd quadruple your video quality. And forget about the stupid Blue mics. Go for the ATR-2100. You can get it on sale on Amazon for like $60. It's a duel USB/XLR mic, so you can plug it right into your laptop or upgrade to a higher end system. It's so cheap, and sounds 80% as good as a $300 mic. Ppl who watch a 30 minute video would much rather have high quality audio with shitty video, as apposed to the reverse. Your content is great, but just a bump in your audio quality could take it to the next level

Also, to add to my previous comment, I don't excuse it in older films; as much as I enjoy Dario Argento's Deep Red, the leading female character in that film is absolutely ridiculous and over-the-top, the scene that sticks out on my mind is when this tiny 90 pound woman beats the 160 pound man in an arm wrestling match.

just put on the Hannibal show. it’s gonna take me a bit to get use to this guy playing Will. have you read the books? they are great and add more detail. i’ll never understand people saying that shit about women in film. most have strong female leads.

The Hannibal series kindof sucks, the main investigator does some random slowmotion timelapse shit, so you lose the detective elements you have in the red dragon and silence of the lambs. Hannibal character has unlimited plot armor (i mean the show is called Hannibal). When the policewoman is in Hannibals basement with a gun. Somehow Hannibal manages to offscreen overpower her, and the scene just does not work because you know Hannibal has plot armor and the police woman is a throwaway character. I think if they left more mystery around the Hannibal character in that series and instead of doing random slowmotion timelapses, actually have the detectives do detective work, the show could have been a masterpiece. Also the murder of the week formula does not suit the show.

I have nothing against strong female characters, but heres the thing. Modern films have very little tact with any of this "strong female character" shit. For example, while this film has Clarice underestimated and objectified even, she doesn't let any of that bullshit faze her, and she keeps on keepin on, because she has a drive to do this, and she most certainly is a strong character, but you put this in a modern setting, and after every time Clarice feels disrespected or someone underestimates her she'd say "God, I hate men", or "Men are such pigs", or that so classic cringe line "Men", or she'd have some cringy "woman power" line in there. There's a big difference between Sydney Prescott, and Ellan Ripley, and Clarice Starling and the modern feminist agenda films. In those characters, their strength was natural, and it was absolutely earned, we bought in to these characters be strong badasses that you don't want to fuck with. Nowadays, it doesn't feel earned, it just feels like they throw women into movies and they want to make them badasses just for the sake of strong females in movies, and they really do shove it down your throat that these women are strong. There's always "I am woman here me roar" bullshit (I do want to be clear here, I don't mean every single movie with a strong female lead in the modern day, but you just seem to not understand why people think like this about any movie, so I'm just clarifying why some movies are quite feministy, and why people don't like them), there's always some "men suck" lines thrown in there, the patriarchy is also something that can be referenced in these films, and that always makes me cringe so hard a part of my brain dies every time I hear it, and here's an example that I don't think I've ever actually heard in a film (but I'm sure it's in some film out there) the wage gap myth being brought up. All of that cringe in one place is a lot to handle, but if you handle your female characters right, and you don't show them as these man hating, often strangely immune to damage cringe machines that say a ton of nonsense, and you make them true blue badass chicks, then that's awesome, and I'm here for it! So, I guess I'll just sum it up by a quote from my favorite Wes Craven movie of all time, "It's called tact, fuckrag". 😂 So, anyway we obviously disagree on that, but if there's one thing we definitely agree upon it's that not only is this film incredible, but that Ted Lavine isn't given near enough credit. In my opinion, Ted Lavine as Buffalo Bill is actually the standout in this film, not that everyone else isn't fantastic, but Lavine just brings a whole new level of creepy.

Seven was a fine movie in 1995. Comparable to Kevin Walker’s later film 8mm. But the veneration of this film over the last 25 yrs is ridiculous. If you take it as a good exploitation thriller, with A list actors, fine. But this masterpiece label everyone throws at this is garbage. Because, when you start thinking about all the plot elements, it falls completely apart. The man shaved off his skin, so he doesn’t have fingerprints, but, uses the public library to take out a book as “John Doe”. Really!? Little things like throughout the movie, don’t think about it, and enjoy it, fine. Otherwise, no.
