Fun fact: Anthony Hopkins really enjoyed going to see this film in theatres. He'd go mostly covered up, so as to not cause a scene, then remove the disguise when the lights went down, and wait for people to realise Hannibal Lecter was sitting behind them. Something I absolutely love about the first meeting between Lecter and Clarice is this: "Did you do those drawings, Doctor? Hannibal Lecter: Ah. That is the Duomo seen from the Belvedere. The only thing I can figure with Hannibal's disguise going unnoticed is that, given the context, with one officer so mutilated, both men being down, and the knowledge that it's Hannibal who has done it...they assumed the officer was horribly slashed and mutilated by him...and since protocol and adrenaline is dominating such a situation...they wouldn't risk fucking with a man's sliced skin when he's in critical condition...so they just cart him away as quickly as possible to save him.

Taking the time and effort to hang and display the other police officer from the cell bars was part of Hannibal's plan to escape. Like a magician, Hannibal was using misdirection to manipulate the police. The police come in and find one officer dead and grotesquely displayed, the other one horribly disfigured laying on the floor, and no sight of Hannibal. Under those circumstances, no one would stop to wonder if the guy on the floor is really Hannibal. They would assume Hannibal must be hiding somewhere, trying to escape. Putting the police officer, now wearing Hannibal's prison clothes, on top of the elevator misdirects the police even further. While they are concentrating on the person on top of the elevator, Hannibal is being carried away in the ambulance. Hannibal even fakes going into shock and having seizures to speed them along in getting him out of the building and on his way.

Fun Fact: Sir Anthony Hopkins won and Academy Award for Best Leading Actor with only 16 minutes of screen time. Also, "The Silence of the Lambs" is the third movie to win all the top categories at the Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay). Also also, it is the first Horror movie to win Best Picture.

Hannibal's eyes in this movie is really a testament to Anthony Hopkins' acting because those eyes are unique to Hannibal. When you see Hopkins in other roles, he doesn't have those eyes. In roles such as "The Elephant Man" and "Hearts in Atlantis," his eyes and demeanor are actually warm and caring.

If anyone wants to see another movie where Hopkins has a totally crazy look for a lot of the movie, Magic (1978) is a fun little horror film where he plays a schizophrenic ventriloquist who finally snaps and starts murdering people. Of his more sympathetic parts, my favorite is probably "Shadowlands." In his latest film, "The Father," he plays an extremely pitiable and sympathetic character who is still sometimes aggressive and intimidating. He finds a good balance.

You mentioned Hannibal’s elegant/savage duality: he’s actually the son of a Lithuanian noble couple as well as an accredited physician and psychologist. He’s also distantly related to the artist Balthus, who’s subject matter was questionable, to say the least. He was actually fairly active in New England’s high society before his... “tendencies” were revealed. But Hannibal and Red Dragon go into that a little more. Hannibal Rising covers his childhood, but that film is considered forgettable by most of the fan base.

@stephenfitzgerald97693 жыл бұрын
@@IanCaine4728 I liked it too. From what I understand, it was based off of Ed Harris’s writing, so I don’t think we can accuse it of lacking understanding of the character. The main complaint I always heard was that people didn’t like seeing Hannibal before the was a monster; that that somehow ruins his character. I was always quick to point out, however, that the central theme of the franchise (and I think they say it in every film) is that no one is born a monster: they are made one through abuse.

That's because he ( "Buffalo Bill" ) WAS a dressmaker. They did NOT explain that too well in the movie. Guess they were afraid it'd slow the pace. In the brilliant NOVEL by Thomas Harris ( not that the movie didn't have its points of brilliance, too ) "Hannibal" asks "Clarice" if she can sew. She later remembers that and references her knowledge of sewing when she sees the dress in "Frederika Bimmel's" closet. She realizes that the marks on the dress are what is called - in sewing terms - "darts" ( see about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dart_(sewing) , ) leading to her, both in the book and the movie, excitedly calling "Crawford" and telling him that "Buffalo Bill" is skilled at sewing, telling him that, "He's a tailor or a dressmaker-".

Lecter is a top notch psychiatrist and used to work for the FBI as a consultant profiler. This case is linked to past cases/previous patients of his. That's why he's so important to them. The mask he made was more of a hood and included the guys hair. You should read the books if you get a chance, they're good. If you want a good telling of the back story, check out the TV show Hannibal. It's excellent and stars Mads Mikkelsen, Lawrence Fishbourne and Gillian Anderson. With regard to you referring to Sir Anthony Hopkins as "this actor", made me chuckle a bit. You're young though so i'll let you off. You might recognise him as Odin in the Marvel Universe or as Dr Ford in the Westworld TV show for recent work. His career has spanned something like 50 years and he's done a lot of good stuff. He can play anything from psychotic killer with scary as f&%k eyes to gentle, with the kindest eyes you'll ever see. I would recommend checking out the following older movies with him in: - The Worlds Fastest Indian (Good, wholesome family movie) - All Creatures Great and Small (Again, a family film) - A Bridge Too Far (One of the best WWII movies in existence) - Bram Stokers Dracula (Not so much one for the kids 🤣)
