I came here because for years I have accepted that Bond can silently kill people in an empty hotel/business room, but John Wick Chapter 2 took it waaay too far when he had that shoot out in a public area and no one heard it. Now I know how it actually sounds.
@Dirtyblue9296 жыл бұрын
Eeeh... I haven't seen JW2 but it is _sort of_ plausible that a shootout with well-suppressed weapons would go unnoticed in a public area, at least for a bit. Silencers are just as much meant to _disguise_ the sound of gunfire as they are to suppress it; if the area has enough noise pollution, like say a busy NYC street, it's... _possible,_ I guess.

That's pretty accurate from what I've heard in movies. Doesn't even sound like a gunshot, which is the main point of them.
@JakeA69565 жыл бұрын
The lowest dB that a .45 can reach using just a suppressor is maybe 120dB For reference 120dB is the same volume as a thunderclap. That is louder than emergency vehicle sirens, louder than a motorcycle, louder than a jack hammer. To compare an air raid siren is about 135dB. Normal gunshots are anywhere from 140dB to 170dB. The suppressor does not let you silently kill anyone, and at most it prevents someone from one end of a large building listening to a loud speaker from hearing the shot, but anyone within a 1/2 mile radius would have no trouble hearing the shot. The suppressor is not made to be silent, it is made for ear protection.
@aperson49335 жыл бұрын
No you'd be surprised. Yes, suppressed handguns (9mm, 40, 45) with subsonic ammo are around 130 dB and could get lower into the mid to high 120's. However, you can't use the dB level as a basis for your claim. Suppressed subsonic handguns have a distinct soft compressed air tone. They sound very quiet to the ear and no hearing protection is needed. Air raid sirens and their likeness are deafening to the ear even though they are similar in loudness dB to suppressed handguns. Mainly this is because of the tone. You are comparing a soft tone to a painful tone. I've heard suppressed guns before on many different occasions. Up close, its obviously noticeable. I once backed up 100 feet away and had the guy on the range shoot some of his suppressed guns. The .45 was really quiet; I heard dull thuds, nothing like the sound of gunfire. People would easily mistake it for some other background noise. I would probably recognize it if I heard it out in public. .223 suppressed sounded like an unsuppressed .22lr but with a compressed air tone, and a deeper, louder, and sharper supersonic crack. Hearing safe but barely tolerable and sounds like gunfire. My point is that everybody should visit a gun range, even if you don't have a gun, to listen to the gunfire. Wear ear protection up close and if you are at an outdoor range, back up about 50 ft+ and take off your ear pro to hear it as well. Know what gunfire sounds like, both suppressed and unsuppressed, so you can identify it if you hear it in public.
@bizmonkey0072 жыл бұрын
The suppression is actually far greater than I thought it’d be. It’s still not the whisper-quiet “phut” you get in Hollywood movies obviously, but it’s significant.
@dhymers Жыл бұрын
You can achieve the "phut" but it involves ammunition that has a higher bullet weight and reduced powder load; the energy and range are greatly diminished but the sound is "phut" - that's why they are often very close range weapons.

@Cragified6 жыл бұрын
They weren't exactly honest in this video. At no point do they mention they are shooting subsonic ammunition. Which is what you need to make a surpressed weapon this 'quiet'. If you use normal super sonic ammunition you are going to have the super sonic crack regardless of how much the expanding gas gets knocked down in volume.
@brightpri66923 жыл бұрын
@@Cragified does the military use subsonic at all?
@Cragified3 жыл бұрын
@@brightpri6692 For special operations yes. There are also several firearms designed specially around utilizing heavy subsonic ammunition to be effective at range. Possibly the most famous one being the VSS Vintorez and the British Welrod. The Welrod being interesting in the ammunition itself wasn't designed to be subsonic but the barrel was ported to release gas from a standard cartridge into the supresser at a rate to keep the bullet from becoming supersonic. However it is done if a bullet is going supersonic it will make a sonic crack. Which is why if you are being shot at, but it misses, you'll hear a crack as it goes past. Subsonic unless it hits something or is tumbling you would only hear in a very quiet place. Neither subsonic or supersonic projectiles have an impact however on the mechanical noise of the firearm which is another element.
@brightpri66923 жыл бұрын
@@Cragified so basically just for close range as velocity isn't that big of a deal? I'm familiar with the welrod, and it's a bolt action pistol, so I would assume subsonic would only be for close range special ops. It seems very impractical at range.
@Cragified3 жыл бұрын
@@brightpri6692 It is definitely not ideal for longer ranges. the VSS Vintorez is an attempt to make it servicable at that range by making the bullet very heavy since F=m*v^2.
