Silent Check Valves: Do They Stop The Thumping? YES!!! (before and after test)

Update #2: May 2020: Instead of replacing the check valve I took the suggestion of someone that commented and raised the check valve higher up. It works great again! If and when I'm able to upload a new video I will. You may also want to install the check valve further from the pump so the thumping sound doesn't come back.
Update #1: April 2019----- It's been about 3 months and this check valve has stopped working. The thump has returned and I'm going to have to remove this check valve and try a different brand. Frustrating to say the lease that it didn't last.
Silent check valves are a great way to silence that annoying "thump" or "bang" you are hearing every time your sump pump or sewage/ejector pump run.
After installing a new sewage pump I kept hearing a "thumping" or "banging" noise when the pump ejected the water. It was driving me (and my wife) crazy. Anytime we used the bathroom downstairs or washed clothes in the washing machine we had to listen to the annoying thumping noise from the regular check valve.
I found that the only solution was to replace the original check valve with a silent check valve. In the video you can clearly see that it reduced the "thump" to virtually nothing. It worked great and was worth the money I spent on it!

My Install: The only problem I ran into was I needed a coupling to connect one side of the silent check valve to PVC and ant other side to copper pipe. A link to the coupling is also below. .

If the noise start's happening again, move the valve up higher on the pipe about midway. Reduce the weight of water in the pipe, reduce the noise. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJbKmHV4gtp3lac

I raised the check valve about 2 ft and it worked! The thump is gone! Now I don't have to buy another check valve! Thank you sir!

It is great advice to stop the thumping but there is a consequence that may impact some people. The volume of water that returns to the pit/bucket. I had a 7ft lift and mine was hammering like crazy. I ended up installing two seperate valves to solve the problem, one high and one low. That worked and less water falling back into the sump pit.

Thank you for posting this, just had a replacement sump pump and check valve and a few days after the check valve was put on it developed a thumping noise just like yours, very annoying sound, going to order the quite valve from Amazon and thanks for providing the link to order it!! 😊

Maybe try a different check valve. It's been about 3 months and the thump has returned. I'm going to have to try a different check valve and will upload a new video to let you know how well the new check valve works.

My quiet spring loaded check valve only lasted about a year ...spring must have worn out...

Thanks for your video. I have tried two AYM check valves, the first one only last 10 months, the second one 11 months. They are vey quiet before 10.5 months approximately, then become noised check valves. I should try move them further from the pump.

Mine does more of a machine gun sound instead of a thump. The plumber knows about it. He told me about quiet check valves.

The thumping sound is really annoying. I have used a few types of silent check valves and none of them are able to completely get rid of the thump. For me there is always a little thump.

@@chaircoverschicago Yeah, I got the Zoeller quite valve and I went from the THUMPING where it shook everything down the pvc line, to complete silence, I can't believe it, well worth the 48 bucks.

I'm confused by your 2020 update. Are you saying to still install the same type of check valve just higher up, or are you saying just to move something in the current setup higher up?

I moved the check valve in the video up a little and the sound got quieter. Moved it up about 2 ft.

I think the thumping has to do with "free" hanging pipes (copper pipe might make it louder). Both of my sump pumps discharge pipes run a few feet under a concrete floor with the check valves (like the on you started with) less than a foot of of the floor. I have never heard a thump even when they run at the same time. I have a T-Y right after the check valves all out of 1-1/2" PVC.

I think you are right. The free hanging copper pipes move a lot when the pump runs.

I think they have them for 2 inch and 1.5 inch pipe. The one I used is for 2 inch.

I actually replaced the pump with a zoeller about 2 weeks ago but kept the same silent check valve for now. It's really not that bad. I will keep it for a little while longer.

I hope mine is okay, it's only been a week. Sorry to hear yours didn't last. I'll have to do an update if it starts thumping. What did you do? Which one did you replace it with?

Mine only lasted about a year then it started thumping louder than my last one. Tried inspecting it, cleaning it of any debris/calcium/buildup and it made no difference. AY Mcdonald also ghosts you if you try to ask for help or a replacement.

Okay!!!!! I'm confused!!!!! How are you getting water in your sump by running sink water somewhere else in the house??? Water in the sump should be ground water from the drain tiles around the house!!! If you are getting water in the sump from your fresh water plumbing you have bigger problems than the check valve!!!

A sewage basin/pit is similar to a sump basin/pit, except that it's for lifting sewage up from a basement bathroom to the drain system on the ground floor. Different purpose, similar concept.
