Silent Hill 2 - 10 Star Rank - Rebirth Ending - No Bullet Adjust - All Items - 0 Saves

No Green Hyper Spray, no bug room grind, no Pyramid Head despawn during Hospital chase, no splicing, no savestates, PS2 boat stage, 3D controls. This run is true to the core.
My best 10 Star Silent Hill video. I didn't think I was ever going to get this, and if I was then I thought it was a long way away. But, right after I finished my previous challenge ( • Silent Hill 2 - 10 Sta... ) I sat down to see how far I could get. And, somehow, I kept going. I don't think any 10 star challenge I've attempted or will attempt before or after this will even touch this one's difficulty.
What makes this challenge so hard? I could go into detail explaining multiple different nuances, but I'll keep it simple: Maria. People forget how difficult Maria is because no one plays SH2 on hard mode, and because the game litters you with enough health and ammo to brute force her. But, hard mode Maria is probably the hardest boss in the entire series. She is a total endurance battle who does a ton of damage and has as much health as the dual Pyramid Heads before her combined. She is easy to choke since she comes at the very end, and knowing you'll have to go back 3 hours and play as meticulously as you were to get back to her is incredibly stress inducing. There is no real way to know if you even have the 10 star rank (or even all the items) until after you defeat her, so at that point it's really all or nothing and it all comes down to Maria and Maria alone. Everything before her matters greatly, and nothing before her matters once you actually reach her. No saves, all or nothing. She is the exclamation point to the run.

Run starts at 1:08. I know why I got 271 items now, 1 more than the total item count. It's because when I took the music box off the music player, that actually counted as an item pickup. It's funny, the only reason why I kept in picking up the upside down blue gem was because I thought that was maybe the extra item I picked up. Also, I know shooting Maria kills her; I thought the Lying Figure bumping into her is what did it.

Thank you. I noticed you asked some questions in chat; those couldn't be answered live since I recorded this a week ago. I can answer now, though. Attacking Pyramid Head with the chainsaw makes it so he won't attack Maria at all. Since Maria slowly regains health over time, if you halt Pyramid Head long enough then it will be as if Maria never even got hit by his spear (if she did happen to get hit.) I attacked him for a decent amount of time to be as safe as possible. Just running from Pyramid Head will get Maria killed on hard unless you get amazing RNG.

Omg, I remember having to fight Maria on hard mode the second playthrough I ever did, & I easily had to restart that sh*t at least 15 different times because she’s a bullet sponge. I tried running & I couldn’t shoot, but when I finally stopped to shoot her, I’d take damage & die after 10 minutes into the boss fight… it was so frustrating, but I’m so glad you madlad achieved this 😎 thanks to you I could eventually reach the 10 star rank & green hyper spray Maria to death 😂 revenge is sweet after having died to that bitch so many times lol

Just finished a 10 Star run myself on Enhanced Edition done with 164 saves, 2D Controls, KB/M boat stage, x3 Bullet Adjust + Dog Ending, I chose Dog because EE makes things a lot more difficult compared to PS2, namely different enemy behavior aswell as way too much speed. For example, Eddie instantly goes for his pistol in phase 1, while in Phase 2 he's less susceptible to stun locks like in your run. The same issues go for Mary/Maria and the 2 Pyramid Heads (Especially the 2 PHs where you can't even get a rifle shot in before both of them reach you and spear you to death, super different compared to PS2). Still proud of the run, tho. I obviously decided to unwind by watching someone do what is quite possibly the best 10 Star Rank playthrough out there, and this is it: not just a 10 Star Rank playthrough, but the ULTIMATE SH2 playthrough: true to the core, 100% completionist mindset with collecting all items + even maps which from what I recall don't add to the item count. Only thing that's missing, I guess, is No Damage, but for that you'd probably need ten solar systems' worth of planets to line up before all of this can be done No Damage in 1 segment. ...Uh, before I finish off the comment, I hope I'm not stirring up a hornest's nest or breaking any hearts, but you missed the Visitor's map of the Hotel, which I do think is understandable considering the emotions during the PS2 Boat Stage. My only hopes is that the Employee's map of the hotel replaces it/makes it despawn.

I can think of plenty of ways to improve this without 0 damage. No mini map, no widescreen patch, no chainsaw, no notes, all memos, all maps... the only problem is trying to fit all these arbitrary requirements in the title of this hypothetical video haha. Pyramid Head works the same in the PC version, if they approach you too quickly then it's because you're not doing the strat correctly. It's pretty precise.

Amazing run, watched the whole video. This will help me for the 10 star run if I ever try it, but Im sure I will use bullet adjust lol... Two questions: Why do you heal so many times if your health status is green (max health) ? Would it be posssible to do this without the chainsaw?

First question: James seems to take more damage the longer he goes without healing, so I heal before moments where damage is hard to avoid or plentiful (like the empty pool with 3 lying figures). Second question: Absolutely. Chainsaw can be replaced with the pipe in most scenarios, the chainsaw is just faster and safer.

I never played this game (or this series) before, but just watching you go through the last boss and your reaction after defeating her made me super anxious as well lol. If I ever get my hands on this game (be it through a PC, or ideally PS Premium/ Ps3 to get the Platinum) I'd like to go for a 10 star rank, and this is probably going to prove most useful, especially since I'd really want to do a "complete" run instead of getting that Dog ending. I cannot even fathom the amount of patience this must have taken to achieve. You've basically reached perfection if you know this game so well, so major congrats! Anyway, I have a simple question: how do you keep track of the amount of Melee/ Shoot kills you got?

I hope one day I can hit Rebirth 10 Star with 100% items (or 101% haha) Question: I’m trying to route all the items but the outdoor segment is difficult and time consuming. Are there any items that are exclusive to the daytime that I can’t pick up at night? I know there’s at least one Health Drink in the alley right after leaving the Apartment Keys alley since it gets blocked off at night.

Nice job! All the items you don't collect the first time respawn during the second visit, except: 1. The one you mentioned in the alley that gets blocked off 2. The two health drinks by the save point before you get the wooden plank

So I’m going to be trying this this weekend…. And I have 1 question because the rest of the internet seems to not know for sure… can you use the chainsaw and still get a 10 star run? @@quartermoongaming I apologize for my sternest. Anyway the answer is no, the chainsaw (and hyperspray as well) doesn't reduce the rank in Silent Hill 2. People only think this because extra weapons reduce the rank in Silent Hill 1 and 3 (not SH4 though).

It's mnemonics. I memorize most of the locations through brute force but I have a slip of paper next to me with custom hints for some tricky spots. Hopefully one day I can accomplish this task without the hints (and without the chainsaw).

the ufo ending requires to makes brief stops to use the blue gem in order to get it. The dog ending is you pick up a key. and enter a door which is more faster

Are you playing on the right difficulty? It only does that on hard mode, on the other difficulties it controls normally.

@@RuminInLove yes I was on hard I finally got the trophy but need more practice for some reason the only way I can do it is by fast turning using the left stick counter clockwise and the right stick counter clockwise simultaneously for a fast turn which is harder idk why the singular left stick turn won't work for me it did once it's weird but I'll have to use this other technique. I use multiple health drinks sometimes since I have a feeling that James takes more damage the longer he goes without healing, so I heal before moments where damage might be taken. (This is unconfirmed)

Uh... Damage points go up? Idk what you're asking. If you're talking about the Damage result on the results screen, the only thing that makes that number go up is damage taken by enemies and there is no way to reduce that number once it goes up.
