I always saw all the endings as interluded, during the whole game the town has used water as a way to remind James of what he himself wanted, drowning in the lake with Mary and dying. The town itself has an agenda, it wants james to commit suicide but does not have the power to influence James himself. In water becomes canon if you as James accepts that all the water has been a reminder of commiting suicide, if you support the leave ending you realize James has the willpower to overcome the town’s wants and power, the town even makes a grave for James, trying to persuade him suicide is the answer. Which ending is canon is always up to you, my head canon is that Leave, In water, Maria and Rebirth are all the canon endings. I think James killed himself immediately when he came to the town, trying to lie to himself about his sin became impossible and he killed himself. While in his dying moments drowning, the town itself infiltrates James mind and shows him the scenarios of Maria, Leave, in water and Rebirth ending. Although it is too late for James to change his fate after having seen the visions.

There's no evidence that supports your theory. But if you play Silent Hill 4, there is evidence that the most likely real ending is In Water ending. There's a slight possibility for Rebirth. In Silent Hill 4 you meet James' father. And it is mentioned by the protagonist that James and his wife disappeared, never to be seen again. Which means that James didn't leave Silent Hill with either Laura or Maria.

Leave ending happened in the fog, same situation on Homecoming, you don't know if only Laura and Elle just get out, and James and Alex can't. The movie was more explicit about this, Rose never gets out of the fog. According with SH4, and Downpour, both James and Alex are gone. In Sh4 the father of James said he is missing, on Downpour there is a file about a young patient that resemble Alex, and he lost his life.

Take in James' life as you like, and pick what ending would fit your understanding of James. On one hand he shows disregard for himself and self hatred a lot, and there's some water themes as well. On the other hand, so much of the game is about him refusing to give up. Fighting the pyramid heads and his twisted version of Maria and saying he wouldn't kill himself to Angela makes no sense if he just goes to kill himself after all of his battles

We encounter this character who we assume is a random person dead in a chair in front of a TV, and when James encounters the footage and watches it to reveal that he was the one killing Mary, he just breaks down in the chair almost if not exactly in the same position as that dead body. I think it's like a metaphor saying that James' life ended there when he found out about the truth. Maybe it's also a good reason to start believing that the water ending is more fitting, even though it's not exactly a happy ending.

That ending letter is pinnacle of saddest game/movie moments. I'm not a story gamer, I'm much more of a gameplay guy like Castlevania, Metroid and Mega Man. This game is an exception. I never skip scenes.

@@Ontiming2023 this is because if you pay attention in the game laura reveals that she is 8 years old and in the letter that mary writes to her, she tells her happy 8th birthday. at the start of the game james just recently killed james and brought her to silent hill to i guess commit sewerslide with her or maybe even to resurrect her, who knows that part but what ultimately ends up happening is the town starts fucking with him because of its supernatural background. The letter he received from mary was never real, neither is maria, and neither are any of the monsters because laura never sees any of them.

SH2 continue with the topic of Lisa in SH1, yeah, she is there, but why?, and the most important part she said "I'm one of them". This phrase is use a lot on SH2 by Angela, and also Eddie. We are the same, they said, that's pretty much sum what is going on, they are already gone, another character in this situation is Walter Sullivan. All these characters are already in the afterlife, but stuck in SH maybe forever, in a loop. In the case of SH2, the best closure to fit into this is "In water" bc he will drown in the lake with his wife, then return back again, discovered the truth, and then in water again. The eternal loop. Now, what happen to Maria?, that's an interesting point, bc another character in this situation is Alex Shepherd, he wasn't a soldier, but returned as a soldier by the town. So we don't know, if Maria and Alex can have a second chance to live, or they are just there like citizens of SH, unable to get out.
