I cannot imagine how much stress and crunch those poor developers were under. It must have been absolutely brutal working on this game.

Konami really needs better leadership, the current exec’s are running the company and it’s IP’s into the ground. It’s almost like they are squeezing as much money from the company before they bankrupt the company, and they retire. Just horrible, old-school, spiteful old men.

I've been saying it for *years* now but it's really incredible that Climax UK was able to salvage the sordid state of the scraps Climax US cobbled together to make a game that was actually pretty decent, in the span of just about a year no less. That's no easy feat. I never knew of the depth of the ineptitude of Climax US management, so that was cool to discover but unfortunate for the devs who had to suffer under those circumstances. Can't be surprised either that the main reason any of that occurred was due to Konami literally being Konami by sucking ass at being responsible for their studios and devs. One thing a lot of people don't understand/know is that Konami's ineptitude stretches all the way back to the 90s, it wasn't just a recent phenomenon. The fact that a lot of good/great games released in the 90s/2000s under their publishing is more telling of the talent of the devs, not the suits.

It's because we as fans care more about the franchise more than anybody that has ever worked for Konami
@jorgecaimanque69512 жыл бұрын
You bring the depth to the controversial surfaces of the franchise. One thing I've noticed in the fandom overall is they tend to focus on the surface product, but have little to no interest to what's unused in the game, the ideas that were scrapped, the process and development of the games we love, the people that made it work... it's just whatever the final game is like, and the "Team Silent" vs "American devs" entities. Ironic, coming from a franchise that's notorious for its depth into darker themes. I continue to enjoy your videos on these matters, and I hope more fans find you and discover these depths too.

Well, yeah, because You play and you pay for what the product is, not the product it could have been. It is cool to know details about the production and the what happun of a success or the what happun of the failure, but it shouldn't affect your "review" of the game

Silent Hill Origins as a whole is a solid *OK* ...but learning the backstory behind the game's development you suddenly realize what a tremendous accomplishment it truly is. Just imagine how amazing the game would've been had Konami given the second team the time and the resources to fully achieve their own vision for it.

It gets some hate just for being western made. But out of all of those, it feels the most like Silent hill to me. It does have it's problems of course, but I'm pretty happy that I got play something else that's surprisingly close to capturing the feeling the first game had.
@Jo_youwhatmate2 жыл бұрын
Alot of the problems with series really did stem from not having enough time in the "oven" so to speak and... Konami being Konami
@Meitti2 жыл бұрын
You can't really fail with Silent Hill fans once you just follow one important cardinal rule when developing the game: It has to be scary. The reason why Origins is still considered an okay game despite some game design and story issues is simply because it still captures that cold sweat feeling of dread the original 4 had. Which is also why Homecoming and Downpour are considered to be duds and the simple reason is those games aren't all that scary. The "Scary" is all that matters, everything else comes secondary. Silent Hill is not about Pyramid Heads and bloody iron net hallways, its about psychological horror first and foremost. Shattered Memories was considered to be a good game and that P.T demo was superpopular and people were wishing Konami to give a greenlight to make it into a Silent Hill game, despite the game barely having any franchise hallmarks. Most important thing was simply that its scary and its psychological horror. Focusing on keeping the old visuals while failing to keep the scary atmosphere just leads the franchise to a path of Hellraiser where it becomes a cheap IP for lazy directors to exploit, making their own crappy horror films while having 5 min footage of Pinhead to justify calling it a "Hellraiser movie".

In my humble opinion, after the Japanese developers, Climax (UK, the one responsible for Origins and SM, I mean) was the only one on the right track to bring greatness back to the series. But Konami just preferred to kick the franchise around like an old, smelly pair of shoes 🤷🏾♂️

With regards to the God of War series coincidence, I think there were God of War games that were developed for the PSP in a Sony studio in Santa Monica. So maybe that could be connected or related to the coincidence.

Origins was the first Silent Hill game I ever played back then when I didn't even know what Silent Hill was Origins made me fall in love with the series and became my overall favorite Silent Hill game, it's also a pretty underrated Silent Hill game in the franchise for being this good of a game (in my opinion) everyone mostly likes silent hill 1, 2 & 3 these days but Origins to me is a gem, thank you for making this video some of the things included in this video were things I didn't know about and I'm glad I do now!

At least it played like a Silent Hill game But man oh man are you right about SH4: was reluctant to play it, and then to beat it; but when I did, I loved the game 4 is up there
@Louis-wp3fq2 жыл бұрын
I prefer 4 to 3, conceptually. Not everything it did worked, but it tried new things whereas 3 went back to the original story, something I hoped would never happen. (The team behind 3 knocked it out of the park, though.) Every game after 4 is TRYING to be a real Silent Hill game instead of doing what the original team would have done: asking themselves, "What COULD a Silent Hill game be?" And that's one of the many reasons the Western games are all underwhelming. (I will give props to Shattered Memories for actual creativity. But it's a shame the game just isn't scary.)

I remember how hyped i was with the first trailer that used the SH3 song and still how time made me forget all about this game. It took them forever but while the game felt quiet simplistic in some areas (like the traveling between dark and foggy Silent Hill) this game wasnt too bad. Actually i think it was the best western SH game and thet one that matched the first games better. I never played the PS2 port toigh but in the PSP it was really impresive and bringed a lot of happynes to finally have a portable SH game.

I really don't think Konami ever really cared about Silent Hill. They wanted the money the series generated without putting effort into it. I think you can see that from the very beginning, when Team Silent was made and left to their own devices. Great for the first few games since they didn't seem to have corporate oversight, but a nail in the coffin after the subsequent games performed poorer.

I got myself a taste until I was 20 to the game because I was so scared to play Sterling Hill until I was 20.

You can tell the team really tried in Origins. I waited for the PS2 release, because I had no interest in the PSP. The mirror hopping was a little hokey, but they made the best of a bad situation. It does have one of my favorite enemies in Silent Hill...The Floating Halo man. You can see the metal halo contraption floating in space, and you can see only the shadow of the man wearing it. I didn't get past the asylum part, but I could tell that there was a level of care put into the game.

0:24 - It was my introduction to the series, though I'm not one of those fanboys that cant see the continuity errors here, I personally imagine it as an alternate universe canon instead of the official canon, it allows me to enjoy it as its own thing, separate from the real Silent Hill story line, cause even with all its story flaws and stupid quick time event mashups "btw, a modder could outright disable those if they tried", I personally enjoy this game even to this day. :3

To me Origins is a fantastic game mostly due to how it emulates the gameplay of the first Silent Hill. It doesn’t really tell anything new, it has rather bland characters and voice acting and it doesn’t expand the Silent Hill lore, at least not significantly. But none of this ruins the overall experience. The core gameplay mechanics and atmosphere of Silent Hill are all here and they work perfectly. I see this game as an extention of Silent Hill 1, but without the plot and characters. It’s a very competent game.

The sad thing is, I liked the early concepts. What they eventually showed, however, also included a hard crunch into what Konami wanted with every game from sh2 getting harder pushes toward action by konami execs. A need to focus heavily on the combat as it was the big demand Konami had. But all that development time and only that to show (as they didnt have the engine until super late) boded pretty poorly. I wonder what a story that happened around the same point in time, but didnt focus on shoehorning ties to the first game and let them happen more naturally...what would it have been? The woman in the mirror; Alessa's personality never really fit in Origins; too much movie Alessa, not enough PS1 Alessa.

Origins had potential, for a PSP game it looks pretty good and the overall experience is semidecent especially compared to every post team silent games. Main problem is the plot is just god damn awful, it's portrait of SH1 characters is very bad and the B plot about Travis parents/past baggage sounds interesting in paper but is not very well flesh out and it's an obvious (and bad) copy of SH2 story.

i think origins gets a bad rep. i think it's the most soild "post tetralogy" game in the series. the only real issues i have with it are the combat, some mild otherworld preferences that i wish were fleshed out a bit more, an annoyance that the butcher was underutilized and the limitless inventory.
