One of the classic TV shows of the 1950s and much beloved by an entire generation of boys who grew up in that decade, SILENT SERVICE ran for 78 episodes between 1957--1958. "Tirante Plays a Hunch" aired in June of 1957 and starred Glen Vernon, Russell Johnson and Charles Gray. The plot revolves around an incident from 1945, in which the commander of the submarine USS Tirante believed that if he did not surface, he would lose his target in the shallow waters of a Japanese-held harbor. (Not to give anything away but Tirante received two battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation for her World War II service.)
Created by California National Productions, this syndicated anthology television series was based on actual events in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy. The show was hosted by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, who began each episode with the refrain: "Tonight, we bring you another thrilling episode of Silent Service stories, of warfare under the sea."
Almost all of the episodes focused on the history of specific submarines, including many war stories. Many actors who appeared on The Silent Service, surfaced in other classic television shows including Russell Johnson, DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy, Jerry Paris and Liam Sullivan, Eric Morris, Joe Conley, Mike Connors, Lawrence Dobkin, Ron Hagerthy, Adam Kennedy, Robert Knapp, Paul Richards, Bing Russell, Craig Stevens, Dennis Weaver and Stuart Whitman.
This was a great show that aired when a lot of military-related series were on TV: "Flight", "West Point", "Annapolis Story" and "Navy Log" to name a few. Unfortunately it never went into re-runs so it's very rarely seen -- something we hope to address via KZbin.

I recall watching those episodes of "Silent Service" (along with "West Point Story," and "Men of Annapolis") when I was in High School.... and "Victory at Sea," as well... they were probably one of the reasons I enlisted in the Navy after I graduated. Just watching them gave me a chill an a thrill... hey, I was an impressionable kid, and even now, after my time in the service was over, I'd jump out of my chair if I heard a "General Quarters" klaxon.

The sub show I recall as a kid back in the 1950;s was sponsored by the SUNOCO gas/oil company. I also thought Llyod Bridges narrated them. I recall Sea Hunt which starred Llyod Bridges which to a kid afraid of going into the sea (and yet later joined the USN) was a terrific show and his show was way before Jacques Cousteau (which I enjoyed his documentaries). Wihout our seas and the great and small animals who live in those seas this world of our is doomed. When the Japanese, Norway, Finland continue to hunt and kill the worlds great whales all in the name of "reseacrh (why do you need to kill 30000 whales a year). Pres Trump demand and enforce regs against any country or person hunting and killing/pocahing the great and animals of the world.
