I feel like in a couple generations, our kids/grandkids are going to look back on these images and go "wow I can't believe people went crazy for fish jumping out of computers or penguins crowding around monitors." Kind of like how we can look back on old food ads from the 50's and laugh at all the gelatin they liked to use.

I feel like the reason this aesthetic is so forgotten is how Bland a lot of the Most iconic uses of it were. A lot of them have a stock image quality to them. And while I do like the aesthetic a ton I can understand why not a lot of people gravitate for it. I definitely think you’re right about it feeling like aliens trying to create something resembling humanity. The overwhelming corporatization of it definitely turns people away. It’s the same reason people don’t gravitate towards the new corporate aesthetic of just bland colors and basic shapes either. It has nothing for you. Nothing that feels real at least. Great video welcome back. Had a lot of thoughts about this one as I love 2000s aesthetics and I always did find this specific one very interesting. And I’d love to see a resurgence of it.

You can thank an old Linux icon pack creator called Everaldo Coelho for a lot of what Frutiger aero became. He had a distinctive glossy art style back in the early 2000s that was quite iconic and his icon pack called Crystal SVG rapidly became one of the most common icon sets for Linux users, until it became the default icon set for the KDE 3 desktop environment. I still consider the newer iterations of Crystal that were made in the mid to late 2000s like Crystal Project to be some of the most beautiful icon and UI design ever, I even used it for a while on my computer. Coelhos influence goes further as he went on to contribute to the UI and icon design of both Windows XP (maybe other windows versions too?) and Mac OS X. His icon design is one of the reasons the TDE desktop environment is a thing, as that still uses the original Crystal icon pack over 20 years later, alongside the other more classic design elements KDE 3 once had (if you dont know what a desktop environment is, its basically the GUI you navigate your computer with, or the visual parts of the operating system). Nowadays it seems his work has been almost forgotten, despite how significant it was back then. KDE 3s UI design was a massive thing even among non Linux tech circles, and attracted quite a lot of people to Linux.

What I like to point out is how by promising this future and failing to deliver, these companies ended up making the modern youth want to push for it themselves. Frutiger Aero is something that sticks in my head.

Great video! I think what you've laid out here perfectly describes why Frutiger Aero appeals to me (and so many others). It brings us back to our childhoods where there was a perfect harmony of hope for the future, yet technology had not completely taken over yet. I hope this aesthetic comes back, but with the inclusion of a hopeful message.

Now this was one fruity video 😋😋😋 It always fascinates me how people like you can write video essays on interesting topics, which are so well crafted with no jarring issues, and speak it's script out so confidently using a microphone. Really enjoyed watching this through it's entirety! The "Dropping The Act" chapter was easily my favourite part of the video. It really does emphasise that this aesthetic was made solely to be a product, but for corporations to keep up in the present day they left their products aesthetic behind and replaced them with the current simplistic trend. No matter how the product looks or pleases people throughout the 90's, 2000's, 2010's or 2020's, it will always be treated as a product, and a tactic for the consumers to consume the product.

Honestly this video must be your favorite so far. The icebergs were really good too, obviously, but I love how meaningful this one was. I could tell you are not just very passionate about this topic, but also did your research as to why it works. Definitely feels like an evolution of Y2K like you said, and the final message at the end is just very beautiful, about how you can find beauty in something that really didn't seem to be intended for it. I do wonder if people who grew up in our age will find a connection to the current simplified corporate style too Also I'm sorry but when you were talking about the artificiality of the "nature" images I could only think about The Lorax asubdiasudnjs

Adrian Frutiger was from Switzerland and named the Font after himself. So, I guess, the right way to pronounce it, would be to pronounce the G hard like the G in "Games", "Gift", "Gold", "Gay", "Greed" etc.

I am mixed on the aesthetic. Some stuff looks awesome. (And some of the flowers pictured in this aesthetic have an ikebana vibe to it looking extremely traditional. ) On the other hand, it often looks EXTREMELY Corporate and fake. Basically "Greenwashing as an aesthetic."

Something interesting is that the same criticisms right before the conclusion could be applied to Frutiger Aero itself, I remember that sentiment. Too artificial, plastic, stripped down to it's essentials, devoid of personality, as friendly and sanitized as possible, corporate... at least... in comparison to what came before it in the eyes of some (teens and young adults mostly). I imagine the same thing will happen in a few years, I wonder what people will be nostalgic about today, and I kind of worry, what new corporate trend will come. Could you imagine being nostalgic for youtubers saying stuff like "Make sure to like and subscribe", something so mundane and present, but what if we are stripped even further of individuality and freedom where a phrase like that brings back memories of a better, simpler time? Damn. Anyway, sorry about the essay, love the video! I'm glad this look and era are being embraced, honestly it feels like it's been elevated to something greater than what it was, thanks to the collective dreams of a whole generation. This look used to be off putting to me at it's time, it seemed sanitized to an uncomfortable, artificial degree. But with perspectives like these, my perception has shifted, I can see how fresh it feels, shiny and new, exciting. It truly feels like a promise of a carefree, green future awaiting.

I genuinely miss this era. Everything is far too bland and minimalist now. Its boring and feels too technical, just for function and depressing. Why can't we have things looks functional, but also attractive to the eyes? 😢 Bring me back to the 2000's. I hate it here in the 2020's. Everyone is socially awkward and cant talk in person or over the phone anymore. Terminally online and everything looks incredibly basic and who knew that looking like a homeless person would be a genuine clothing style now?... The 2000's had the perfect mix of a real social life and technological mix. Clothing styles were more interesting and cool and technology wasn't too invasive into everyday life, people were more social and friendly. Products didn't look or feel like it was only for function and soulless, but also had more of a solar punk vibe, shiny and optimistic coexistence with nature. Great video btw!

Happier times, my best friend who I had yet to meet until many years later was still alive and In great health, I had hopes and ambitions, I was enjoying the simplicity of novice/amatuar made gams on a mud engine, I was laughing at the crude Immature joeks of flash movies on Newgrounds, most people just got along as we still hang out In the real world. Everything was black and white and made sense. These are really fond memories growing up even though I was the poorest kid In school. Unlike today, my best friend passed and I was never able to get closure, I am broken with nothing at the end for me, that engine Is now mostly used for one game, those jokes today can lead to campaigns against you, and everyone Is at eacho thers throat. People who just want everyone to get along have become endangered thanks to politics, social media, and fear. If I could ever restart at any point In my life just once, going back to these great days are VERY tempting to go for Instead of the start of 2022 where I would have several months more time with my friend, and one shot to prevent that Incident. :(

Simplification is a common complaint for Cartoons and TV shows now Cartoons have the same copy and paste look And Some TV shows too (in my opinion) I like to think back in the 90s and 2000s how cartoons and TV shows had so much passion and distinctive looks they used to have.

Tbh I understand that with all the shit that the Switch menu gets, I do still feel the quick loading screens were part of the right call. Nintendo was suffering in reputation for about a decade for looking far too kiddy to the hardcore market (even moreso during the Wii U era) that I feel the choice for the Switch's menu made sense. The lack of customization after that new menu got adopted though was a real shitshow

Something I often say about the Nintendo Switch and why I hate it so much is that it may be a good console, with good games and good compatibility (because you can take it anywhere) but its just not a Nintendo console in my eyes, every other Nintendo console feels like it was personally made for you but the switch doesn't even come close to making you feel the same, they don't even have an eshop theme! This supposedly happened because the switch had no power so I really hope the next Nintendo console actually feels like a Nintendo console
