In July 2023, the Leela team introduced a feature called WDL (Win/Draw/Loss) Contempt. Behind this austere technical name, there's something amazingly cool! You tell Leela “Look I’m playing White against an opponent rated 400 ELO lower than me. Can you suggest some ideas in the opening to maximise my winning chances against such an opponent?” During analysis, Leela will look to sharpen the play to a degree appropriate to the ELO difference! AND, EVEN better... well, you'll have to watch the video to learn that secret! ;) Note that the analyses of these games in these videos reflect the thoughts I had during the game! I thought this made sense as we are using Leela to prepare against a human opponent so it seems right to describe how it feels! For the objective truth, take a look at the analysis of my games against Leela by Stockfish and Dragon which is available from the usual place: cloudserver.che...

The thing about this line is that it's also tough to play as white, even if you're prepared. It's going to take a lot of energy from you to play it. The attack is fantastic though. This line reminds me of the first game Kasparov and Deep Junior played in their match.
@SiliconRoadChess
@SiliconRoadChess 8 ай бұрын
yes it requires a fair amount of energy to play as White it's true! But with 5 Leela games as model games (and the pgn of Dragon / Stockfish analysis) it's definitely easier to do it!

Thanks for taking those losses against Leela for our benefit :) Contempt works great even in engine matches. Funny story, I once pitted leela with almost max contempt and a beefy net vs Rybka 4 in a 100 game 5+3 blitz match with the perfect opening book (for a cheap laugh of course). And leela won all 50 games with white and over 35 games with black losing none. It's ludicrous the difference is playing strength between cutting edge neural net engines vs classic HCE engines which, to their credit, were already miles stronger than humans.

@@NaphthalinDD I did and without contempt, NN engines draws a lot with black as the objective is to equalize. You can also try with unbalanced books like Stefan's excellent UHO book (CCC use this) but there will be lot of draws with black.

@nRoadChessWould you be willing to risk losing to a one node (no search) Leela? Rumor is that recent BT4 nets are GM level with pure policy, but nobody can convince a GM to test that claim. I'd also love to hear your experience playing the LeelaKnightOdds bot on Lichess!
@BetterChessFaster
@BetterChessFaster 7 ай бұрын
Another fantastic video! On Lichess in blitz I've faced 12 different moves after 4..e6, but not 5.g4! That may change now of course. It does, however, feature with one lightly annotated game in the Crazy Leela Grob Semi Slav Accepted in Ipatov's Volume 2 Unconventional Approaches to Modern Chess book (p332-334). Accepting is seen as "the principled response, of course" with unfortunately no space found for analysis of ways of declining. It has to be said he's a bit lukewarm on the concept. But watching the two videos it looks practically difficult to play against for a human, even against another human. Most importantly, Ipatov doesn't offer an alternative name for the opening!
@SiliconRoadChess
@SiliconRoadChess 7 ай бұрын
Aaaah thanks! I should have remembered that - I liked Ipatov’s books a lot! Yes of course, he had that little section at the end! Thank goodness I can keep my name for it 😂😂 Yeah it’s a pretty cool idea… considering how many pawn sacrifices there are in the Slav/Semi-Slav it doesn’t feel so crazy to do this here!

There was an interview with one of the Stockfish developers on the Levitov Chess channel, and he talked the Contempt feature that earlier versions of Stockfish had. As far as I remember, and it was long ago, it was not so much about the openings, mostly it meant to avoid trades. It helped Stockfish to win some games against weaker engines, that otherwise could have been draws. Eventually Stockfish became strong enough to beat weaker engines even without the Contempt feature, so it was discontinued.
@SiliconRoadChess

Yes I seem to remember that too. I get the feeling that this Leela contempt is somewhat more advanced than what Stockfish implemented: it has a profund impact on all aspects of Leela's game.

I loved your excitement, I had the exact same joy! Been using the contempt feature for a more chaotic/playable OTB repertoire which fits my style more. I typically set the contempt elo around 120 - 250, even at a lower contempt (i.e 200's) u get those g4 sacs in a bunch of lines. I find sometimes the super high contempt (>250) sacrifice a little too much eval for my taste. Can't wait to see the new videos which target the human element of these positions. I am curious how well say 200 contempt does in rather drawish openings, haven't looked into it myself. These are usually the settings I use: "WDLCalibrationElo": 2800, "WDLEvalObjectivity": 1, "MovesLeftThreshold": 0.95, "Contempt": "180"

OK! Ah really interesting! You've obviously done a lot more tweaking than me. I was wondering whether 400 was a bit too much :) and I was going to play around with the settings. Great video, thank you GM Sadler! It must take a lot of humility for such a strong player to broadcast their games against an engine, and even more so to play in the same way that you would against a human opponent. Besides leading to very fun games it looks like this kind of engine training could potentially be very useful to improve your play by first playing the variations out yourself and then checking what strong engines would have done instead. Then maybe have another go at the position after stealing some ideas from Stockfish, lol. It could also be fun to try switching sides once the position is losing and see if Leela finds some crazy way to defend it against a human.
@SiliconRoadChess
@SiliconRoadChess 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes I think that's one good thing that I have for this sort of practice - I don't worry at all about losing to engines! I still come back every time filled with optimism that this is the game I play out of my skin and beat it ☺☺ Switching sides is a very nice idea! You know that's how one of my very first coaches - a lovely chap by the name of John Smith, rated about 2100 - used to do things. We'd play out a game, and then when he got on top, he switched the board around. Worked really well!

Today I used the Gambit again and could win this game as well. If you are interested in the annotations of those two attempts of mine please let me know. I hope you have a little fun with my Patzer attempts😁 In the second game I actually fell into the little self set trap, by taking on g7 with the rook and missing the fork by the knight with Nh5 on Rook and Bishop on f4, just as you mentioned in your Video. But the Fish shows that it is not a total desaster at all, but instead "just" loosing the advantage I already had. But my opponent missed the opportunity I gave him and went on downhill. Very cool, though maybe not quite as exciting as I initially hoped (looking for wacky novelties like the video). For example, as black in the Taimanov, with contempt around 200-400, it still basically recommends Taimanov mainlines, so I guess that opening is already tactical enough. Against Bf5 in the Slow Slav, nothing too spicy either unfortunately. A direct Nh4 was the most interesting I could get. That being said, it has a ton of interesting ideas in the fianchetto benoni, including the wacky: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g3 c5 4. d5 exd5 5. g4!?

Ooooh that's nice! Yes it's quite mixed what Leela comes up with. I'm doing some stuff at the moment where the line it chooses is not so unusual (though not main) but the play after most definitely is... I think you really need to play out the opening in a game to get the full experience! Because it really seems that Leela thinks completely differently about positions in general with this setting!

I think what you're saying about the Sicilian is pretty exactly what is happening. I have tried to find Contempt+Elo settings for the most common gambits, and while it is easy to convince Leela that way to play KGA/KGD, Evans, Grob and even stuff like the Latvian Countergambit and reverse grob, I had no luck whatsoever with the Smith-Morra, as Leela was basically saying "if white is stronger by any amount, playing the Sicilian normally is already so bad for black that white doesn't need questionable moves to complicate it even more".

It isn’t strictly the same, but it very much reminds me of Mamedyarov’s 3.g4 in a would be nimzo Indian.

Indeed! Funnily enough that's exactly the opening that the Leela devs looked at with this feature when they presented it: github.com/LeelaChessZero/lc0/pull/1791#issuecomment-1486746586

I am about 700-900 points weaker than you. I found helpful the part where you described the mindset necessary to play against an engine. I request a video, which needn’t be streamed live, of yourself playing a game against Leela-Zero set on one node, in which you discuss your thought process move by move. I think a lot of people would enjoy and benefit from that video.

Yeah I will definitely do that at some stage! For "The Silicon Road to Chess Improvement" I ran a 101-game match vs Leela at 1-node and people have been asking for a live streamed version of that ☺

Will we ever have AI playing like specific players? Or the sample size of say 4-5k games is just too small

I think that's one of the holy grails for this type of AI: to be able to deduce more from limited sets of data. For the moment though, I don't think it's possible. Would be so cool - could be applied to all sorts of fields actually (though we might like that less) like art or literature!

I noticed that on 2700 Black against 2000 White settings, Leela plays the same opening as Magnus Carlsen in online blitz starting 1...f6, coincidence?

Don't know! Probably just great (twisted! 😉☺) minds thinking alike! 😂

Covering dubious openings which give good practical chances, it's almost like you're a Chess KZbinr. In all seriousness, if you played against non-contempt Leela at the same strength in a more normal opening, like with you being black, do you get dismantled just as fast or is this showing some real strength of this particular contemptful opening?

100K nodes is probably around 3200-3300 strength so I will always lose to Leela. But in normal games I just get squeezed by accuracy. This was something else - I truly had no idea where the next hit was coming from ☺ and you'll see that in an even more remarkable way in the next video coming out on Wednesday. This is truly something different and fresh! For me at least, a completely new way of working with engines!
