I worked a 1972 Arrow mine train coaster with 5 blocks. Everything was manual. All brakes. All lift chains. You had to physically climb the lifts to turn them on. The stopping mechanisms in the blocks were either skid brakes, lift chains or rotating rubber tires. The brake run had trim, ready, dispatch, safety. All were completely manual. If you held the buttons down on the panel you could shoot the coaster through. Adding trains had to be manually moved on the transfer track and hand pushed into the track. All brakes were skid brakes. So you had to know the ride very well and have great timing. Block checks were only done in the morning by the morning crew so consequently if there were ever a shut down in the evening - nobody knew what to do including the supervisors. If you didn't turn the right key or press the right button it was totally screwed. I also opened the ride and did the block check.

I know this is a pun, but on a side note I went to the same ride but different park which had a block brake in the middle and it ruined the ride. It would be a full stop making you slam forward, wait a minute, then continue.

Beautiful explanation Silv! Blocking is kind of high-level thinking for most RCT style players, but it's crucial if you want your parks to run well and your queues to empty.

Decent video, as always! :p As CoolioJoe100 already explained, trim brakes are usually not design flaws, and 90% of the time manufacturers plan them in the design - even when they are not installed eventually. Because as for all the other kind of brakes, IRL you still need a straight line in your layout in order to place a brake. So for instance, in the Mako simulation, on the Fury 325 one, you can spot the places where trim brakes will potentially be installed in the future, because there are small straigh lines on the hills. Actually, whenever you need a straight line or not depend on the design : If the fins underneath the train are vertical (Intamin, Premier, etc.), you can do vertical curves, but no curves or rotations. If the fins are horizontal (B&M), you can't at all. Now for the block brakes, that was a great explaination, I just feel like you missed one important notice about a mistake people often do: you'd be careful to have your MCBR high enough so the train is sure to clear the layout in case of a stop, even if in normal operations the train keep its speed from the previous block. Also, when you put the final brake run, it would have been nice to end the brake run with a block section. THERE. It's off my chest, I can sleep now. ^^

Thank you! Block brakes make a lot more sense now. I'm not sure if you've mentioned it in another video, but for brakes there's also a second tab (which took me a while to find!) where you can control things like the Brake Target Speed and Deceleration Rate (and for block breaks, Release Speed and Release Acceleration too). You can also control how fast lifts go and how much acceleration you get from launched sections. There's an icon above the Angle Snap, Auto Tunnel, etc. that looks like a clipboard, and next to that is one that looks like a list and says "Utility Settings" when you hover over it. Really useful stuff, but a bit hidden away if you ask me! Hope that's useful for someone. :)

One of the things this game does need to add is a friction setting. It seems like brake sections aren't as useful as they should be because coasters seem to lose speed a lot quicker than they do in real life.

Exactly. the friction is so overbearing that you hardly ever need to trim and it leaves MCBRs more of a blocking necessity than a brake. It just shouldn't slow down as much as it does.

I made a coaster that was so aesthetically beautiful when I started, but over time, I started chipping away at the scenery to make way for expansion later. At the end it just looked like total shit. I called the coaster No Man's Sky

Perhaps a more straightforward way to explain block brakes is that they divide the coaster into, well, blocks. Only 1 train can occupy a block at a time. You did explain this in the video, but not in so many words. I also feel that the coaster example you used for block brakes was rather poor, I would have tried to make a less compact layout so we could more easily see the many blocks the ride was divided into. You still explained it appropriately, I just feel like the block sections part in particular could have been more well put-together. Thanks again!

Our trim would stop the train cold. Was so much fun to run because it was totally up to you! It didn't automatically stop.

The one thing that constantly screws up block timing are the guests. Loading a train full often takes longer than the running time of the coaster but having it run half empty isn't really economical. So that is a factor one has to consider.

It's nice to know something about the history and actual use of characteristics of coaster types in addition to all the tips on how to make them. I also find these tutorials present info on several skill levels so that I can do the beginner parts then come back for the more advanced lessons. Great job. I hope someday you do a video on that so-called "famiiy" coaster with the cars that spin horizontally. That one is totally baffling me.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone is a section of ride that only one train may occupy. At the end of a block zone is a method to stop the train in case the block zone ahead is still occupied. This is the safety system that prevents roller coaster trains from colliding with one another.

Hey, thanks for the tutorial! I have a suggestion though. Can you make a video about coaster reliability? Everytime I build a coaster I get low reliability. I always keep an eye on the speed and G forces to make sure they're not too harsh, I smooth the track until I can't smooth no more and I do use trim brakes when necessary even though it makes the ride a lot less exciting. Sometimes I have to redesign the whole thing and if I'm lucky enough I can make the reliability average. But the rides still break down quite often. Well, it's not clear how it works and it's sooo annoying when profitable coasters break down every 5 minutes or so. Thank you :)

Personally i put the expection time at 20minutes. Normally that makes quite a difference already. Maybe once every year do a refurbish helps as well

Something worth mentioning in relation to block sections, is the time it takes to fully load a train - thus, even if you have longer sections where trains are waiting when you test, it might not be a problem ones you open the coaster.

Fun fact the trim brakes on nitro at great Adventure in New Jersey are turned off and were never used again and are just there for show basically because the park thought the trim brakes took away from the speed and force you feel on the hammerhead element also because they though the ride might lose too much speed and would have a problem with valleying

California Screamin' at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim uses a trim break before the loop. The coaster runs a little faster when it comes into the approach so it can be trimmed for very accurate entry speeds. I don't know if it was a fix or built into design, the track layout seems to point towards the latter. It's not very offensive and it doesn't really affect the pace to me.

Also whilst I'm here, great videos btw Silvarret, is it possible to specify how long the train can be held on the block, I.e. You never want to hold a train at the top of the lift. Therefore can you add a new block section at the base of the lift and tell it to only move onto the lift once the next block is clear?

Can you disable the lift hill as a block? My 2nd train always have to wait at the top of the hill and I don't want to add an extra block brake in the middle of my track. Is there a solution?

Just to add, if you don't care about realism, the gameplay reason to use regular brakes (instead of trim brakes for everything) is that regular brakes cost less and can be set to have a higher deceleration rate.

I know this video is out for a couple of years, but what you haven't talked about is the "power" of the breakes. Well I assume you just have to figure it out how to set them up but sometimes I wonder if it makes any sense if for example you put 5 block segments together you put higher brake speeds on top or at the end of this. (20, 18, 15 etc.) It would be nice if anyone can tell ;)

In PC, Trim Brakes are also MUCH more expensive than Friction/Magnetic Brakes, and they murder your Reliability score if you use them too much. I think a single tiny flat section of Trims is like $500. You really only want to use them when they're needed.

Block brakes enkel op het einde is vaak een probleem, maar dit is alleen bij lange banen zoals B&M hypercoasters die meestal in het midden een block brake section hebben. Hybrid achtbanen hebben eigenlijk nooit block brakes in het midden en zijn vaak kort genoeg om ze niet nodig te hebben. Regel is in het algemeen dat zolang de treintjes niet bovenaan de lifthill hoeven te wachten (of heel erg lang in het station) dat je geen block brakes halverwege de baan nodig hebt.

Just to add, I've found a section where the option for Trim breaks isn't greyed out but every time I click to add trim-breaks it doesn't do anything... (As in it automatically removes the trim breaks as soon as I add them.

I would like to see a tutorial about how to make paths that function well and blend seamlessly with scenery (like in Suzaku). Paths that create a central plaza/ courtyard too. Also, maybe custom light posts and fences?

This would have been so much easier explained and illustrated if you had just used the word "section" instead of "block" when referring to a portion of track, and had just made a simple oval coaster with a hill or two. It would also help people to understand that the whole reason for blocks is to prevent an even worse catastrophe by preventing the rear trains into smashing into the train in front of them should train in front have a failure. Basically, trains don't get the go-ahead to start onto the next section of track before it's been cleared by the train in front of it.

I hate block brakes. I used to operate a rollercoaster and you had to constantly ensure that cars were moving through the station. If we had a person taking there time getting out of the back car and I had already sent the front car out I had to ensure that the back car got out of that position otherwise the whole coaster would shut down and then take ages to get it running again.

I really wanted a new computer for Christmas to get Planet Coaster- until the requirements needed 8GB of RAM!! I'm really sad that I'm not getting Planet Coaster, because if I DID get it, I'm basically paying about $700.00 for the game. I wish the game didn't need so many gigabytes. :(

Having any type of trim brake on a curve is not realistic since the brake fin or brake shoes on the vehicle chassis are straight. None of those brakes can be used on curved track.

Intimidator 305 is the best example for trimbrakes. It caused many blackout at the beginning. so they installt brakes. Later they made the first curve wider, so it wouldn't cause blackout anymore
