I was also wondering what the residues in the filters were. It looked like possibly silver chloride in the second filter (from the mixed PGMs), but I have no idea what else was in there, or what was in the first filter (from the Pd precipitate).
@AndyGraceMedia
@AndyGraceMedia 2 жыл бұрын
The undissolved black particles in the filter post AR probably are traces of the other PGMs .. most likely a small amount of rhodium and maybe tiny traces of iridium and osmium. Rhodium isn't overly soluble in AR because it creates a passivation layer. Jewellery has been rhodium plated for many decades to make it more brilliantly coloured, extra tough and scratch resistant. Less so now because the price has exploded to tens of thousands of dollars per ounce, but some of the older jewellery sreetips has recycled will have been rhodium plated, so it will accumulate in all the anode baskets and filters.

Awesome stuff!! I'm wondering about the filters. if the AR breaks down the filters with the precipitates, then how can one be sure the filters will be effective with the rinse? is the AR too dilute after the refining the "eat" the filter or is it a matter of how much time/heat on the filter? thank you for the content, always good to watch with a cigar in the garage 😊

Is the copper really responsible for the golden color of your silver shot? Alloys containing much greater proportions of copper (even as much as 50%) tend to retain a silvery color-at least in my experience. I'd have thought the toning would be due to silver oxide forming on the surface of the molten shot as it was poured through the air without any flux. Great series!

If you reheat the solutions they should go back into a "super-saturated" solute. according to Science. Luckily you use waste containers so you probably haven't lost any gold due to this. It can also become super-saturated by kinetic means, such as using a stir bar... Though you may already know all this, I only share with others to expand knowledge..

It's mostly just HNO3 and HCl do you think sreetips charges himself $500/hr? Of course Mr Google will help out a teensy bit too. Some of that insoluble metal collected in the filter from the PGM aqua regia could be iridium which never dissolves in AR or even better rhodium which passivates quickly in AR so never completely dissolves. You might get a third of it to go into solution but hardly ever more. Just takes a gram of Rh and you're looking about $500. The only way to get iridium to dissolve is in molten cyanide salts. A whole new level of extreme danger.

The intensifying blue colour in your silver refining electrolyte is a little concerning to me. At some point the increasing copper concentration in this blue solution will begin coplating copper and silver onto the cathode, contaminating your refined silver.
@ritabennett
@ritabennett 2 жыл бұрын
He's aware of that, I binged his silver cell videos and he's shown that he 1) only uses each batch of electrolyte for two runs, 2) regularly adds fresh silver nitrate to increase the silver concentration, 3) makes sure to stir the electrolyte occasionally so it wouldn't get depleted near the sides and cause the copper to start plating out. I'm pretty sure he also mentioned that he's considering coming up with some mechanical solution for the latter - like a stir bar - though I wonder if that might interfere with the crystal formation? Purity should be unaffected, but it'd probably break off the crystals early or make it plate out as outright powder, so the aesthetic value would be affected.
@roberthayward9299
@roberthayward9299 2 жыл бұрын
@@ritabennett Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I've watched many of these silver refining videos too and I agree that Sreetips adding silver nitrate solution will favour the deposition of silver. In fact silver is already favoured because it's a less active metal than copper. However there seemed to be additional copper in the latest operation as can be seen by the discolouration of the silver shot as well as the more intense blue colour. One way to do a qualitative test for silver purity would be to dissolve a excess of the product in dilute nitric and check the colour. Blue would indicate copper contamination. To make the test more sensitive, enough ammonia could be added to make the solution alkaline. This would produce a more intense blue colour if any copper was contaminating the sample.

That was funny! Honestly contact Jim Jefferies on KZbin. I bet he likes to make a podcast about You're channel. I am 51 years old and I wish I could just go to pawnshops, garage sales. I am German and it is not easy here to get cheep metallic resources. I am a US citizen too but moved back to Germany. I am a honest person. I stole a chowing gumm when I was six years old and I still feel bad about it. In 2010 I trolled RT, in 2014 I did it again ( Russia today) I warned the BND and the CIA about puttlers interests. I had to change my name Manny times, on KZbin. Got poisoned and multiple death Threads, smart phone and all PCs were hacked too. I was a Nostradamus and puttler did not like it.

@@WyoWellTester unless they're on his roof 24/7 sniffing the fumes or the entire neighborhood consists of metal refiners, no one's getting hurt - the concentration should drop down to negligible levels as the fumes mix with fresh air. He's not running an industrial scale operation.

Where does the palladium come from?
@sreetips
@sreetips Жыл бұрын
Palladium follows silver because it’s soluble in nitric acid. The only one of the six sister metals in the platinum group that is.
