SILVER RECOVERY FROM CONTACTS - no acid !

On the junkyard I bought several pieces of brass with big silver contacts. After testing I found that the contacts were 925 clean and so I solved them just melting them and selling them. In addition to the proper melting step, it is possible to remove extra tin and dirt and leave only 925 silver for sale.

the copper i the alloy tends to blum to the outside of the melt so the remeals probably raised the silver content quite noticeably.

Just remember that some silver contacts are alloyed with cadmium. Even desoldering them releases gasses that cause cancer. Be safe. Work in well ventilated area and wear disposable clothes and gloves.

Exactly. Why refine it to pure if you're only selling to a refiner? The added expense of time and acids eats into your profit.

Cadmium should be in flux as impurity as it melts and oxidizes at about 350C.

Why do you add the flux at the end of each melt? What does that do?

Removes the oxides purifying it's a short way of cleaning the outside layers of silver instead of using a cupola process

I think silver contacts can vary from 80% to over 95% pure. Probably want to refine them to guarantee purity or at least let the buyer know how you made the silver button, so they can judge the purity. Also if ya got really good contacts you could be burning yourself selling as .925 when it could be higher.

Hi Eric, A simple test using the reagent, Schwerter's solution, will reveal a dark red for sterling quality vs a blood red for pure. As the silver in the alloy decreases, the reaction colors indicate content percentages.

For what I know contact silver can be contaminated with some unhealthy nasty stuff like cadmium. I rather spend 15 USA dollars and get me a pure 999 silver coin.
