Wow! How much more of this kind of stuff is out there somewhere? For those of us who loved everything Bark thru Long John Silver and all the spinoff recordings in between, every time something new pops up from recording archives it is thrilling to hear. I love this version. And weird as it may sound to say, having always loved Grace’s contribution to a song with her on piano, I hear something here that makes me think of Phillip Glass. Now that’s pretty weird eh? Many thanks for digging this up and posting it!!

You're very welcome! It is a great version isn't it? I found it 20-30 years ago buried on a bootleg CD full of live stuff (most of which is out officially now) and it really surprised me too. Goodness knows why this one is still in the vaults when most of the other stuff is out now or why Grace's demo for this song leaked when none of her others have (as far as I know!) That truly was a golden run of records (I'm super fond of Bark and Long John too). And I see what you mean about the Phillip Glass links with that sort of wavey floaty feeling, good shout. I keep dreaming that they'll put a disc full of Grace's piano demos out - until then I'm only too pleased to get to share it with other people who get how great it is!

@@AlansArchives It will be. Grace always seemed a part of a band never apart from. Unlike Janis, she didn’t go out on her own ( corporate management separated Joplin from her best band and friends unfortunately). Grace today is overlooked as a songwriter and unique voice. The beginning here on “Silver Spoon” illustrates that. Never an “oh my baby left me,” Grace turned to literature, current topics, and mind-tripping, contortions of lyrics and vocals. I hope there are other buried treasures like this and, for example, “Frozen Noses.”

@@Yayahey Sigh, I agree with you about Janis - she'd still be around now if she'd stayed with Big Brother.

So inventive, creating her own style, particulary here with her magic freedom.

Excellent! I prefer this to the album version, and especially like the clarity and articulation of the vocals.

So glad you liked it! I agree, I love the 'rawness' of this version. Which is quite apt really given the subject matter!

What a great performance! I just keep waiting for Joey Covington's drums to kick in. And Papa John, too.
