Finally someone does a reaction to the classic that 'revived' the western in 1985. Kevin Costner's joyous idiot, Jake is my favorite from his acting career. Scott Glenn: The Hunt for Red October, The Right Stuff, The Silence of the Lambs, Courage Under Fire and The Bourne Ultimatum. Seldom a leading man (this here might be the closest) but an excellent supporting actor.

Loved that you viewed this gem, thanks. And a huge thanks to Christi + Patrick for spreading the good word; great taste. Costner's first main gig was in The Big Chill, also by Kasdan. But all of Costner's parts got cut in the editing so Kasdan promised him a bigger role in his next flick. This is it :) And what a (stacked) cast. Along with The Big Chill, the ensemble cast of The Right Stuff has some of the most 'seedlings' of people that would go on to some pretty huge hollywood careers.

I believe that Kasdan saw his friends Lucas and Spielberg have tremendous success with reviving genre filmmaking, with Star Wars and Raiders, so he took the cache he’d earned with The Big Chill and tried to revive the western. I loved it when it came out, but unfortunately it came out the same weekend as Back to the Future, so it was generally considered a bomb, which is a pity, because it’s a fine fine movie… Kostner’s first major role, and he’s a hoot in it. The cast is, unsurprisingly for a Kasdan film, is superb, Kevin Kline and Scott Glenn and Danny Glover are all top notch and great. The supporting players are all great as well. At the time, it was a breath of fresh air for sure.

When they decided to film in New Mexico, there wasn't a town suitable to shoot in so they built one. The town of Silverado was constructed from the ground up just for this movie. All of the buildings were fully completed with camera ready interiors as well. Afterwards, several movies were shot in Silverado over the next several years, the last being Wild Wild West. In shooting that movie, they blew up some of the buildings for an effects shot but an unplanned fire started that burned down the rest of the town.

Yes, they built a new town for this. But, in an homage to the old westerns, they built it using the same layout from the town used in many westerns of the 50s and 60s which no longer exist. Compare it to the town from Rio Bravo, McClintock, Cat Ballou, just to name a few.

I think it was underappreciated when it came out because Western movies were out of style by the 1980s. Silverado found its audience on home video and TV airings.

I love this movie. So much fun, and such a great cast. I always loved John Cleese short role, and his line "today my jurisdiction ends here." When I was 13 we had an horse named Salute. I couldn't ride him when my father wasn't home, so I didn't get to ride him often, but I loved that horse. My favorite gun fight was when Payden bought the crappy gun to get his horse back. That scene set up his character really well.

While this is a cheese fest, I personally love the film. It is basically a western version of the Three Musketeers: Athos = Scott Glenn/Emmett - The wise older brother/father figure Aramis = Kevin Klein/Paden - The 'romeo' of the group Porthos = Danny Glover/Mal - The rugged strong guy d'Artagnan = Kevin Costner/Jake - The impetuous youth

Umm, the books Porthos was partially a comic relief. See his portrayal by Depardeux in The Man in the Iron Mask.

@@zvimur I'm well aware of this portrayal as a comic foil in the books (as well as virtually every film adaptation) that Dumas wrote. but I am also aware that he was the physically strongest of the group and love his food and in particularly his drink, as did and Mal who was show to be both strong and an appreciator of whisky.

Agreed. I saw it at the theater very curious to see a female protagonist in a western and DiCaprio in his next film Was shocked to see an unknown name shown second in the cast scroll. I thought " who the hell is Russell Crowe?" Lol

I was in my freshman year of high school when I first saw this(a couple of years after it came out) and it remains one of my favorite films. I loved the cast, starting with the main leads, Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, as well as Brian Dennehy, Jeff Fahey, Linda Hunt, Rosanna Arquette, John Cleese and Jeff Goldblum. The actor who played Wilson on the TV series Home Improvement also had a small role in the movie. My second favorite thing about this is the score composed by Bruce Broughton(he also composed the score for another one of my favorite movies, 1985's Young Sherlock Holmes). The music in this movie was so amazing; sometimes I watch the movie just to hear the music. There is so much more I could say about the movie, but it would take a whole book. Let's just say that I watch this movie quite often. Oh, one more thing about Bruce Broughton: He also composed the score for Tombstone, with Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer.

As memorable as Linda Hunt was as Stella the bar keep, she was even more impressive three years earlier in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982). She played Billy Kwan, a photographer, guiding radio journalist: Guy Hamilton(Mel Gibson) through his first major assignment in the political tender keg of Indonesia. It earned her a supporting Oscar. The movie is a tour de force work, directed by Peter Weir who made a whole lot of really great films; from Picnic At Hanging Rock(1975) through to Master and Commander(2003). All are recommended; if not must sees.

Lonesome Dove is one of the very VERY few films/series that is as good as the book. Still recommend reading the book tho.

Lonesome Dove is amazing, some rank it as the best western ever made. I've seen it four times and I still break out in tears at certain points (no spoilers). Fabulous cast in it: Robert Duvall, Danny Glover, Tommy Lee Jones, Frederick Forrest, Chris Cooper (he is amazing in it), Steve Buscemi and the great Angelica Huston to name just a few ! Written by the late great American writer Larry McMurtry (he died last year) it is a 6 hour movie for the ages. It should be enshrined. I fracking love it.

Over the years I've met several of the cast members. Kevin Costner, Brian dennehy, jeff fahey and Linda hunt. They were all really nice and considerate, but Linda hunt was on a different level. She was so stunning and brilliant and classy. She was literally larger than life.

Such an amazing ensemble cast. Larry Kasdan as writer and director - fresh off The Big Chill. John Bailey as the DP with so many great films under his belt. This was the first western I saw that had real, serious production value. There are great westerns but until Silverado they didn’t “look” like this. And I think it’s much to the credit of the DP. Such a gorgeous film. The scene where Cobb (Brian Dennehey) walks away from the house burning down - wow!

John Cleese learned how to ride a horse in this movie. All of his previous horse riding appearances in Monty Python were of him sitting on a stool, shot in close-up; while the long shots of someone on a horse was done by a stuntman.

,, James Gammon who plays Dawson, was also the manager in baseball classic Major League (1989) & it's sequel,, Danny Glover is ofc Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon (1987) franchise ,, The Quick and the Dead (1995) is another contemporary made western with an all-star cast, and I would also recommend, Of Mice and Men (1939) starring Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney jr as George Milton and Lennie Small 🤠

Lawrence Kasdan did NOT directed The Empire Strike Back. He WROTE the screenplay and tthe screenplay of Return of the Jedi. Irvin Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back.

I like how Danny Glover walks into town with the rifle, THEN decides to chamber a round. It's kind of like movies where people are always racking the slide on a shotgun for no reason...you'd think they'd have a round already in the chamber ready to shoot ahead of time.

Historic note: attending public hangings wasn't for "entertainment". It was sometimes mandatory and it was about making the community feel responsible for getting the right person, and so people saw the consequences for the crimes. So it was about being a deterrent for committing crimes and a deterrent for being too lax in finding the guilty.

The company line can be toed all day long, but it'd be foolish to ignore that it was largely entertainment for people of the day. Particularly if it was a Native, Latino or Black person being hanged.

Gotta say Paden (Kevin Kline), being a gambler almost everything that came out of his mouth had to do with luck or gambling. Liked his relationship with Stella (Linda Hunt) because he knew she was really the "Midnight Star" and he would not let her down. First time I remember seeing Kevin was probably in "The Big Chill" with Kevin Costner (scenes cut except for his wrists in the beginning and written and directed by Kasdan. It had a all star cast also and is really a good story. Probably my favorite of his is "Dave", a rom-com with Sigourney Weaver, funny movie. Linda Hunt won best supporting actress playing a male in The Year of Living Dangerously with Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver.

This has been one of my favorite movies for a while. I'm 16 but I had the pleasure of my dad loving this movie. So i was introduced to a lot of westerns and older movies. I mean my KZbin name is a reference to a movie from 79 😂

The Warriors !! Yes, it is actually based on a book by the ancient Greek writer Xenophon called "Anabasis" .. I have that book, it is fantastic and the Warriors movie is great too. Ajax was my favorite in it as well. Cheers man 🍺

Since you appear to like Kevin Costner westerns and I am assuming you've already seen "Dances With Wolves" and "Open Range" (if not definitely see both and soon) my recommendation is that you check out the movie "Wyatt Earp". It came out the same year as "Tombstone" which stole all the thunder due to everyone's fascination with Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday. But it too is a decent western with an all-star cast and the same big budget production values as "Tombstone". And it is a very underrated portrayal of the same source material. In watching them both you will also be able to sort out better fact from Hollywoodized fiction by noting the scenes that make it into both movies. So that is kind of fun. But "Wyatt Earp" also provides the origin story that "Tombstone" skipped over and it's rendition of the Wyatt Earp vendetta ride is, I think, much closer to reality. Your Patrons will likely never vote for it due to most of them probably never even hearing of it and the majority of those that have being so infatuated with "Tombstone" they can't stomach any other version. But you should watch it anyway and if not here then on your own.

It is a western that basically hits every western trope you can think of. Did poorly at the box office but it is just FUN. Add to that the best western score since The Magnificent Seven.

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, technically a soundtrack, but works as a score. It's thoroughly interwoven with, and integral to, the film, and in my opinion, is vastly superior. Though, I'd agree, for anyone who's seen the Seven Samurai, the best part of the Magnificent Seven is the score.

In the movie, Urban Cowboy starring John Travolta and Debra Winger, Scott Glenn played the antagonist against John Travolta's character. Glenn was considered once like Clint Eastwood because of his face. By the way, Glenn had a great part in Absolute Power also directed and starred Eastwood.
