I think the black stuff that comes off of the wiper blades is actually the graphite that the blades are initially coated with to keep them from skipping and squeaking. A better solution MIGHT be to clean the blades and then run a 9b graphite pencil along the edge of the blades. Wd40 would work temporarily but as someone else said, it will degrade the rubber and it won't last.

@broncobob36
@broncobob36 2 жыл бұрын
This is bad advice and will only work well temporarily. WD40 is mostly made of petroleum distillates and oil. These 2 ingredients will accelerate the breakdown of any rubber product. Sure, applying it to wiper blades will remove caked up debris and lubricate them to slide easily over the glass windshield (even with no water present), but the rubber compound of the blade will degrade and crack quicker. You will be disappointed at the short lifespan of your wipers, especially if you paid $30+ for the pair. The best way to maintain your wiper blades is to apply soapy water with a scrounge pad to remove caked up debris then wipe a silicone lubricant on the blade with a cotton rag. Ironically, WD40 also makes a silicone lubricant in a spray can. Silicone won’t breakdown rubber like petroleum distillates and oil will.

Thanks for the tip -- I'll try it. Great video! You could go even one step further by applying a coat of Rain-X, after the invisible glass dries. I've been using Rain-X for over 40 years, and it really improves visibility in rain. After about 40 mph, I don't even need the wipers anymore, unless I'm getting a lot of spray from other vehicles. Snow and ice come off much more easily in the winter, too.

Most people don’t know that the “WD” in WD-40 stands for ‘water displacement’. It was developed for minimizing ice buildup on liquid fuel rockets external tanks. It just happens to have lubricant properties as well as being hydrophobic. This is a great use for it since that is what it’s designed for as long as you rub it in well so as not to leave streaks of it on your windshield.

WD-40 has over 2,000 uses including cleaning even though it was originally designed to prevent rust and corrosion on the Atlas rocket in 1953. It's a petroleum based lubricant that displaces water which prevents rust and corrosion. Being that it's a petroleum based product it can be applied to rubber of any type unless it's silicone because rubber is made from petroleum which will recondition it by making it more pliable. It also seals the moisture away preventing dry rot and cracking. WD-40 makes a product called "Specialist" High Performance Silicone Lubricant that does a better job than regular WD-40.

I put WD-40 on a clean cloth and do the mirrors, glass doors and shower doors. It works wonders. In the bathroom, water marks on the mirror wipe off easily, leaving no streaks. It has cut my housecleaning time in half. I also have used it in the sink disposal for years. Once per week. The disposal is 14 years old and runs like new. I use it on the garage door hinges, the tracks and spring, and on the attic pull down ladder cables. Keeps everything working smoothly.

RainX depends alot on the angle of the glass and the amount of rain. On cars with a really low angle and a light rain, the water is repelled into fine droplets which do not weigh enough to roll off the glass. The result is blinding glare with street lights or traffic lights at night. Far worse than any potential visibility problem from general rain. Because of that I think of it as a product for my side windows and mirrors only.

Otherwise they can snap off in subzero temps, I knew someone who BOTH doorhandles snapped off! So yes WD40 might have solvent properties but mostly keeps water off things that are coated with it. Just bend your wipers back into alignment so they are perpendicular to the windscreen. All these screen coating and new wipers don’t work if the underlying issue isn’t fixed. Adjustable wrench, twist the blade arm either left or right depending on when the wipers chatter. If they chatter when they go up then twist the blade arm anti-clockwise

WD40 is a degreaser and do not apply on hinges because the door might do like mine when someone applied it on a door that was making noise, he put just a bit before i say no not this product! on mine wd40 clean the hinge at the point it was hard to open then i use a silicone grease and it was perfect!
