I remember that moment she announced her retirement, i knew she wasnt going to be picked for the comm games because her performance with pulse was not very good, i am happy i now know the story behind her retirement and mad respect to wai for allowing her to exit the game her way. A great of the sport and was a privilege watching her growing up, an era of nz best netball. More pure as past players will be great. Thanks for the memories Irene and You got your very own magic tshirt autographed and sent it to me, i still have it. Something ill always treasure 😀

As a young boy in NZ at the time who grew up in a rugby/netball crazed family home I found my love for NZ netball and followed the silver ferns through the 90s and 2000s (which I call the golden years) eventually playing myself for a local men's club team. I was inspired by Van Dyk and met her on a number of occasions. An exceptional netball player which goes without saying of course but also an exceptional human being off the court as well! I really enjoyed this interview! The memories of past greats who all contributed to the golden years of silver fern netball putting our small country on the world map and transforming international netball forever! ❤️ so proud to be a kiwi!

I think any normal house hold in nz with mums dad brothers and sisters all grew up loving both sports. nI thought it was just my family. I love rugby but I also like watching the netball and that early 2000 period is what got me interested in netball..probably because I like watching the kiwi girls finally beat up the aussie at netball

Irene Van Dyk in her Netball years in her birth place of South Africa was good it’s not until she moved her and her family to New Zealand is wen she stamped her place in Netball, and became one of the best players not only in New Zealand but around the world and has always stayed humble and true to herself and all around her, which shows the tru essences of a great mana wahine and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to meet her and I thank her for all her contribution to Netball on and off the court and her love for her two motherlands South Africa and Aotearoa is truly priceless something money cannot buy, and her legacy and memories will last a life time. Nga mihi hoki ki a koe te wahine Ataahua Irene Van Dyk ❤️🖤❤️

What a wonderful NZer Irene is. I was on a plane one time, where an elderly woman was struggling during the flight. Irene sat with her, calmed her down and held her hand until the Air NZ people came to help the elderly woman from the plane. Champion on and off the court.

Would have loved to see you back one more time in the black dress 💯🖤🤍 🇳🇿

I love Wai, for her pure honesty and humbleness. But she was not a great head coach for the Ferns. Irene was still good enough to be there for the 2014 Comm Games (and possibly the the 2015 WC. Maybe not starting 7, but definitely on the bench)

We should never had let her go when we did, she had one more world cup left in her! Waimarama shoved her out before her time and nz suffered for it for a few years under wai leadership! almost lost everything under her. Noels had to come clean it up after her and the last coach!

No spot is reserved for any player on any team that wears the black uniform. Every player that puts that black jersey on has worked harder and played better than anyone else in that position, in the entire country. They earned the right to wear it over everyone else. You're not taking someone else's spot; if they were good enough they would be in that spot instead of you.

I don't see this as Irene "Retiring", She was essentially fired. I see this as the Ferns not wanting to look bad for getting rid of the best player in the world. Which is shady af.

Yes...i was one of them that didn't get that opportunity n yet had potential but not the right colour. The same happened to our daughter in a different apartheid era.. she went to a model c school but still they only allowed the white girls to go n play trials n had a lame excuse when I questioned them about it. Nevertheless. We moved to NZ in the late 1990's and I don't regret it..never moving back there.
