Wow that's brought some memories back. My husband worked underground at silverwood till it closed. A sad day indeed

I'm proud to say I worked at Silverwood from 1962 in the Melton Field seam. My dad was a deputy in the Barnsley Seam along with my brother. No man should have to go underground and work in such conditions but I'm glad I had the oppertunity. I remember everyone with fondness, in particular Colin Fairhurst, Wally birch, Bill Foster, george Wassel. All gone now but still remembered.

My brother is on this video. My dad worked at Silverwood all his life along with three of my brothers until it closed. Brought back memories of going with my mum to meet them as they came up in their orange suits and unrecognisable covered in coal dust.

Flood it with men and expensive tackle and it becomes uneconomic, that's what happened with all the mines. Sly tory tactics.
