It was definitely retconned for the movie for reasons unknown. In Season 2's "The Happy Wanderer" after the first executive game under Tony is over he begins to reminesce with Silvio how when they were kids they used to peak through the door to watch the game being run and then getting chased out by Feech.

Tony and Sil argued about Columbus Day because it was supposed to be Tony and Paulie. Tony Sirico, who played Paulie, was injured and couldn’t film that episode as written, so the characters were changed. Silvio’s anger about Columbus Day makes more sense when you know that part was written for Paulie.

I think that it was wise and acceptable for Silvio - the epitome of cool, calm, and reason - to have one or two minor personality quirks - namely about Columbus Day and cardplaying (he would get really worked up).

Remember, this was Chrissy's version of events relayed from beyond the grave. Who could be a more "unreliable narrator?" There were a lot more profound differences than Sil's age. In the series, Johnny Boy never went to prison following his arrest at the carnival. In the film he went away two years or so. The Sopranos family had their own house in the movie and Johnny Boy already owned or at least controlled Satriales while in the series they apparently lived in an upper floor apartment and Johnny wouldn't take over Satriales until two or three years later. Rocky never appears in the film though he may have been alluded to as the reason Johnny went to prison for assault. But worst of all were some of the hackneyed movie tropes scattered throughout the film like the protagonist falling for his father's wife, then her sleeping with his worst enemy and the unrealistic manner in which Dickie dispatched her when he found out. And parts played out.more like an action film, like the shootout between Dickie and Harold.. It was almost like a screenplay written by Christopher Moltisanti.

I've always assumed Syl was about 5-8 years older than Tony. The reason Syl stuck close to Tony is because Johnny Boy asked him to, after seeing his reaction to the severed finger incident at the pork store and realized that his son might have what it takes to be a varsity mobster. Sylvio had to mentor Tony, somebody had to after Dickie's death, so Johnny Boy likely impressed upon Sylvio to do just that, which could explain why he might be with a younger crew.

@jesus85ize
@jesus85ize 11 ай бұрын
@@saljpal3 the movie was a monstrosity like I said, above! Fucking horrible! No, it was never joked about nor was it ever proven that Silvio had a hairpiece. Also, when he was in his coma, after being shot, he still has his hairpiece on perfectly? Because it wasn’t his hairpiece it was his actual hair. What they just ruffle up his hair when he was in a coma? The dude had a full head of hair. I don’t know who thought he had a hairpiece! I think one of the riders did poor ass editing, never rewatch the sopranos, and just assumed that Silvio Dante had a hairpiece, because the actors actually bald. However, the hairpiece within the sopranos show was supposed to be real. This guy wasn’t balding to begin with, and that over the top Puss on his face was fucking horrible acting. The show Steven Van Zandt was able to pull it off perfectly, but this actor and the many Saints of Newark did a horrible job betraying that character. Honestly, the editors, producers and directors should be ashamed of themselves. Thank God this movie kind of traveled under the radar! Hopefully it gets thrown out into non-existence and they start over with a new prequel directed by somebody with sense. When making the prequel, you don’t have to cover everything and everybody all at once, and just naming it after one of their last names. focus on a plot. I have all the characters who have something to do in that plot in the movie leave out anyone who is on necessary do not go out of your way to show an Easter egg stop overdoing it with Easter eggs, even like “sisters, Cunt“ of which Junior said three times in the fucking movie when he only said it during one scene of the entire series of the sopranos. After he said it slipping in the shower, he never said it again, but in the movie it’s like his “go to word“. That just tells me somebody looked at a skit of Junior soprano scenes did not do their research rushed everything and put it in the movie. SMH the same shit they did with that 2018 GOTTI movie with John Travolta. This had the same type of formula which ruined the movie. Movie lacked style, had no feel hadn’t nothing. You look like you were just seeing a bunch of lowlife stinky old men yelling at each other, sitting down all day, and the occasional murder with another city. One dude kills everybody and then he gets killed by another black guy but we don’t even know who that character is. I guess he’s some big capo within the family but he’s never introduced. The only time he’s introduced is when he collects money and then he gets shot outside of a bar room SMH, movie made no fucking sense at all and it kind of irritated me because of the lack of skills people have in Hollywood these days. Tells me that most of these positions were filled due to the color of peoples skin or the sex between their legs. SMH sucks. Not a good way. Tell you that.

I always imagined Silvio being Tony's "boss" in the little mini-crew, right up until Tony busted up the card game, like he would give Tony and Ralphie and Jackie tips or pointers, and in return, they kicked up to him a healthy cut. Then Tony's dad Johnny and his Uncle Junior have to step in and smooth things over and make sure Tony doesn't get killed after what goes down at the card game. Part of that effort to make amends is Tony performing his first hit alongside Paulie and Big Pussy taking him out to celebrate. Then he goes down to Florida after the hit to wait until things calm down. A little bit after that he's not a Made Guy but he's a soldier or an associate or whatever, until he's formally inducted into the crew, and becomes an officially made guy. For all its faults I really want a second movie but I worry that the chances of that happening are slim to none. It's a shame because there are still quite a few more stories to tell. Tony dropping out of college, the robbery of the card game, Tony's first hit, his trip to Florida to lie low, marrying Carmella when he finds out she's having Meadow, and Tony getting Made.

There's a scene in the Sopranos, and I don't recall the episode, but in the scene, Tony has a moment of recollection, and reminds Silvio how they, when kids, would sneak around the back and watch Johnny Boy through the slits as he conducted business and how Johnny Boy would often chase them away. Chase, like their both kids! Then I watch The Many Saints, and not only is Silvio not a kid, but he's clearly made his bones! This was not a man who was being chased by Johnny Boy....Or, hanging out with Tony! Sorry, it's hard to watch The Many Saints without getting pissed off over these horrible continuity errors. For me, the Many Saints was a missed opportunity. And, the fact that we didn't get Feech's card game is just astounding. David Chase needed to step back and let someone else skipper this thing.

The only worthwhile take aways from the Many Saints IMO were that Chris's father was actually murdered by Jr, that snake, and getting one last glimpse of Gandolfini's charm through his son. The movie had many flaws which contradict the show. The one being Dickie, aside from Tony we never heard much about him in the series. Here, Silvio, Paulie and Pussy are part of his crew and not once in their heart to hearts with Chris do they mention they even knew him, let alone were mentored by him. When uncle Junior has a problem with Chris and Brendon and discussed it with Livia, they both act as if he’s just a new kid on the block instead of being the son of somebody they knew let alone how fond livia was of Dickie. Tony says he’s taking out a girl named Carmela to Dickie, yet in the series we know she’s related to him.

MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK IS NOT A SOPRANOS MOVIE. It is a separate story about DICKIE MOLTISANTI that takes place in what the SOPRANOS HBO Show referred to as a bygone era - nothing in Sopranos was “as it used to be” in Many Saints of Newark. Anyone complaining about this does not understand the dynamic of the two pieces and why they exist separately. Almost all of THE SOPRANOS is about how things “aren’t the same as they used to be,” referring to their lives in the Mafia in the 60s-80s compared to the 90s and 2000s. Obviously this would be reflected in the tone, humor, aesthetic, language - everything WOULD feel different, which is why the older characters in the Sopranos are so out of touch with reality. Come on, y’all. If you were looking for SOPRANOS PART ZERO, you were in for disappointment before the opening credits rolled.

@@Zay_WVTTZ I wouldn't call it a "whole lot of nothing" if it warranted a pretty decent two paragraph response from you. I agree with most of what you said, and it doesn't change my original statement. People were expecting a Sopranos prequel because of the Marketing behind the movie, but that's clearly not what David Chase set out to do. Not every episode focused on a Soprano or DiMeo crime family member. What made Sopranos so rich was the world of which it was built. Why make a new random mobster to tell this story you want to tell if you already have characters within that world at your disposal?

Fair enough. I actually enjoyed the later seasons of GOT, and I personally thought D&D got a lot of unjust heat for show creators. I do genuinely believe Martin is the one who bottled it in the sense D&D ran out of source material and were put into a very difficult situation.

Many Saints showed us a 16 year old Tony who was not in the game yet at all and a Silvio who recognized his potential from the get go. The Series also made it clear Silvio was older and more experienced than Tony as well. For all we know… their bond developed between the movie and when Johnny Boy Soprano died. It also needs to be mention that if Silvio was a made guy, he would have to kick up so of Tony and Jacke were making a good living as associates… He isn’t above getting in on their action. What we saw makes sense when we really consider all things.

In my opinion Silvio took Tony under his wing after Dickie got popped. Silvio was the only person to speak up for Tony in Many Saints and when Tony started hitting licks he kicked up to Silvio because Sil had an arm around him. I heard Silvio tell Tony once "I've known you since you were a kid" , I took that as Sil being older.

Not everything was consistent in the series. Vito and Phil weren't cousins until season 6. In season 5, it's clear they are not related. Phil shows up at the job site with his brother Billy and asks Vito if he knows his brother Billy. Doesn't make sense if they were cousins.

I had the same thoughts about Sil & Tony's bond he had to be maybe 3_4 years older, but no more to make the back story of robbing the card game work. Paulie was 59 or 60 in season 1 Tony 40, so given how invested i was, i assumed Silvio was about 44-45 in season 1.

At first glance of the series , it seems like Tony was the same age as Sylvio but a few scenes in the show makes it seem like Sylvio is closer to Paulie's age. Like when Sylvio says I've known you since you were a kid....but if they came up....he would say I've known you since WE were kids. Or when Paulie says he goes back to johnny before YOU even. Like he was only about five years ahead. But Sylvio still goes back quite a ways. It kinda makes sense everyone in Tony's crew is probably ten years older. Other than bobby and Jackie.

Like you said In the show it was said that silvio was considered to be the boss before tony and Jackie was the boss before tony . In other words I don’t think age would have mattered position wise so it not crazy to assume the timeline is somewhat accurate. Also I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel like it was an interesting way of conveying the fact that memories change over periods of time all we really know about his past before watching this film is from what he’s telling Melphi in therapy . Also do you think jr told tony about dickies death ?

If your a hard core fan it makes sense. Silvio was older then Tony in those days though Silvio was still a young guy coming up at the time. Wich is why in the very first episode Silvio didn't even know who Artie Bucco was. Tony grew up in a younger generation then Silvio and knew artie bucco from high school. It was revealed in the series that Silvio was actually suppose to be the Boss but it got passed down to Tony.

I honestly didn't think it was that weird. I always assumed they were tight not only cause they knew eachother since forever but because Sil was just old enough for T to respect him as a knowledgeable guy but also not so old that he feels he's too old and outta touch. I always figured they were 5-10 years apart, or close to halfway between T and Pauly. In the streets it's not at all crazy to see a wild range of ages together. It would probably have been a year to a couple years after the movie in Tony's late teens or early 20s that he really hopped off the porch and Sil easily coulda been one of the main figures helping him with it making Ralph's story fit fine. They don't give us an age in MSON so he could have been anywhere within that range and could have just come up since forever with Dickie and Johnny. Without actually knowing his age we can't say anything got messes up lol

But, Sil being the smart man he was decided to befriend those younger guys knowing they would be the next up and comers on the mafia scene. Also, he probably figured it would look good to take them under his wing so to speak in the eyes of Johnny and Junior

I think people are missing a key point in this. Sil tells , Tony.” I’ve known you since you were a kid”. I could see how that would indicate to some people that Tony and Sil grew up together. I always thought cell was a few years older than Tony, I think, with the mini Saints did, was shows, still watching Tony, grow up and Sil being made a few years earlier, Tony is automatically going to have respect for him. That is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

How about this: Once Dickie was murdered, Tony decided to be like him. He, Jackie and Ralph and possibly Tony B, were their own crew. Silvio was Tony and crew's window into the family, as i'm sure Johnny would not approve. When Ralph includes Silvio in his convo with Jr and friends he could mean that Silvio was in their crew in the sense that he provided them with the scores. He always saw something in Tony, and became Tony's new Dickie. Silvio was at the card games Feech ran, and probably tipped Tony off on all the games. They talk about when they were kids, but i call people in their 20s and even 30s kids depending on my mood. Richie Aprile said Chris was a good kid. Anyway, if you look at it from that perspective it does make possible time line holes less deep. That said, Paulie looks like he should have been ten years older than Silvio. That aspect of Many Saints was a bit off kilter. Great video!

I've always seen Sil as the Queen of the board, so to speak. Insanely strong and capable, even taking down Jimmy Altieri when they confirmed he flipped, among other arrangements of course. His down fall after that shoot out was a dead sign Tony was about to get whacked. In the movie I thought Sil is on his way to see Tony as Mafia material. Even arguing with his uncle about the matter. IMO, Tony's uncle death solidifies that view, thus making Sil become a mentor figure to Tony, who has none. Johnny boy wouldn't accept his son as a mobster, neither will come to see him as one, just like Tony will do with AJ. I think this movie will need a sequence to tie up things better. The movie's inclination was to tell the story about how Tony fell into the Mafia despite his relatives shunning him off as a kid. Uncle Jun, Richie, Feech, and the other old timers.

I also very much enjoyed the movie I have no problem pointing out its issues either. It should have been a series or it should have been understood that they were doing a series that will follow the movie. There isn't enough time to flesh out what I feel is the weakest part of the film is the Dickie-Harold rivalry. There's too much other stuff to focus on and not enough time to flesh it out properly. We should get a following series and let's see how it goes. Silvio's age is still kind of true to the series like telling Tony he's known him since he was a kid but when Ralph mentions him being a part of their own little crew it's odd to think that Sil would go from a loyal soldier to someone like Dickie to go back down and be an elder to a crew of up and comers. It does cause issues that I wish it didn't. Sil is 1 of my favorite characters ever. On a positive note I'd like to express how well young Silvio was done. I understand why many don't appreciate an acting performance of an established character being a complete impersonation but Sil was always a very overstated character so to speak. The Pacino impersonations and more I think the only way to play the role is to ape Steven . Shame about the Timeline but we did get a worthy young Silvio at least. The cheese seen and his defence of Michael Myers from the original Halloween being likened to Freddy and Jason always kills me thank you👌😅 Sil should have had more input on Cleaver.
