Awesome, just awesome. I own SC3 and had it on my laptop that I put in the closet a decade or so ago. I attempted to put on my pc now with windows10 but that didn't work out. I buy the new (to me) SimCity5 basic with one extension. At 60 yrs old I was absolutely lost in the game. I would always start out like a champ but then self destruct. Your tutorial has done everything for me in seeing how this version of the game is played. Much much different than the older ones with the same general concepts. I like the new version so far. (since I found you guys anyways.) I just bought this game a week ago.

The regional concept in SimCity is a new one to me. How did you decide "Oil is next?" Oh and I have ordered a copy of this game and should get it in around a week or so. Thanks for the inspiration to get back into this franchise.
@The8asement3 жыл бұрын
Enjoy the game! SimCity has several regions with varying amounts of cities. 16 is the max. Some regions have as little as 2 or 3 cities. The cities in the region can work together. If one city has too few factories and some sims that live there can't find work, they can drive to the next city if it has available jobs. So you can create some inter-dependent systems, which is fun. You can also send goods and utilities to other cities, and work together to send resources to "great works" sites where you can build big projects. I highly recommend two sites for SimCity: www.simcityplanningguide.com/search/label/Blog (show all of the regions, all of the cities within the regions, and the natural resources underground, and much more) www.parsimonious.org/simcity5/index.html (many great articles on how the various mechanics within the games work) I decided that I wanted to do oil in city two because oil can be sold for money, used in oil power plants, and refined into fuel or plastic. Plastic will be important to us down the line in this region. :)

I wished that SimCity would come to Wii U (and later Switch) as it's almost the only game that forces me to use a PC, but now that The Basement has a good rig that I can use, I find myself back into this game, playing Minecraft on Windows 10, and dabbling in some indy games on Steam.

3:13 This road doesn't need to bend around for the water pumping station; give the sewage plant one treatment tank module on the east side, then the water pumping station can go on the same street as the sewage treatment plant on the east of the sewage treatment plant. 3:44 No reason to care about pink land value. 4:29 This is the pattern; it'll be fine. 6:15 Finished already? Is City Hall all you hope to accomplish here? There's so much more that can be done on a flat plot like this. 8:54 Further punishment for a lack of cross-streets. The game does this with long turn lanes, even though multiple lanes can be used to make the same turn. You've got to have cross-streets for this reason. 10:40 In the end, they must all be upgraded. The density freeze is good since this pattern will not survive high density. 13:40 Instant punish for the circuitous road connecting the water pumping station. RIP 16:45 The way to check is to try to fit a Tall Tree Row on the spot of the building. 19:43 The problem with this is you still lost the space where the road used to be. The only solution is to draw it without that space. 20:08 Hazmat trucks are needed at high density industrial. 22:44 Not with this pattern, but a flat plot like this could certainly reach 75k. 24:36 Roads along the edge generally need upgrades less, but with $1.8M you can afford almost anything. 25:44 Spreadsheet looks good, but it only counts if the traffic allows. 27:24 That's never a good idea. The more ways people can get around, the less people are dependent on any one intersection. 28:38 Finance should be the first department ever built. Never having it has slowed this city significantly. 31:40 Without a University with School of Engineering, industry can't survive at high density. 36:08 I like these edits. 38:20 Since you're starting to make Tier 2 services, the Tier 1 services aren't needed. 39:26 What I did in my games was draw a dirt road behind the hospital to fit the modules that require roads. 42:43 It also allows $100k bonds, which are a big deal early on. 45:11 Yes, you really do fly to City Hall every morning once it's built. 48:19 Approval rating goes up as buildings max out happiness & stay that way; ideally, you do it at low density with a density freeze to drive it up fast. 49:20 Basically, the two departments that only Gambling cities care about. 50:46 It's a good city, but I wouldn't want to be your neighbor. Those high school buses will ruin neighbors' education. This plot could've been so much more, but a maxed out Mayor's Mansion is a nice consolation prize.
@BasementLetsPlay3 жыл бұрын
Here are my responses, if you're interested. No need to respond to this, but feel free if you want. Thanks again for all of the great feedback. 3:13 "This road doesn't need to bend around for the water pumping station; give the sewage plant one treatment tank module on the east side, then the water pumping station can go on the same street as the sewage treatment plant on the east of the sewage treatment plant." BASEMENT: I have read that the main buildings need to be as close to each other as possible, and because they're oriented opposite of each other, they need to go on different streets to get them the way you want them. I'll keep your method in mind in the future, though. 3:44 "No reason to care about pink land value." BASEMENT: Yeah, I deleted that extra park pretty quick. I like reducing pink land value for my own satisfaction, but it's good to know that the sims don't actually care about pink. 4:29 "This is the pattern; it'll be fine." BASEMENT: LOL, silly game. 6:15 "Finished already? Is City Hall all you hope to accomplish here? There's so much more that can be done on a flat plot like this." BASEMENT: I have a tentative plan to return to this city as the final thing in this series. Once all 16 cities are completed, I'll return to city 1 and make it better. I might not do that, though. Part of that plan was to upgrade services to Tier 2 at that time, but I ended up doing that already. 8:54 "Further punishment for a lack of cross-streets. The game does this with long turn lanes, even though multiple lanes can be used to make the same turn. You've got to have cross-streets for this reason." BASEMENT: This crossstreet advice you've been making is definitely going to influence my strategy in future cities. 10:40 "In the end, they must all be upgraded. The density freeze is good since this pattern will not survive high density." BASEMENT: Most end up upgraded, and as you later saw, cross streets were added. The city sustains at 95k. 13:40 "Instant punish for the circuitous road connecting the water pumping station. RIP" BASEMENT: LOL - DANG it. Oh well. Live and learn. 16:45 "The way to check is to try to fit a Tall Tree Row on the spot of the building." BASEMENT: Yup. I use that trick often. 19:43 "The problem with this is you still lost the space where the road used to be. The only solution is to draw it without that space." BASEMENT: I don't mind the little gap. I picture living in one of those apartments and having a friend in an apartment building across that space - our back yards touch and we could play back there. Enough room to run around, play tag, build a fort, etc. 20:08 "Hazmat trucks are needed at high density industrial." BASEMENT: I've read high density, and I've read high-tech. I believe IGN claims high-tech are susceptible to hazmat fires. Is it just high-density? 22:44 "Not with this pattern, but a flat plot like this could certainly reach 75k." BASEMENT: Mwa ha ha! You'll see! 24:36 "Roads along the edge generally need upgrades less, but with $1.8M you can afford almost anything." BASEMENT: Another reason why the finance-first strategy doesn't compel me. It must've driven you nuts that I waited until the 4th module for finance - sorry! :) 25:44 "Spreadsheet looks good, but it only counts if the traffic allows." BASEMENT: Crossing my fingers there, it seems. 27:24 "That's never a good idea. The more ways people can get around, the less people are dependent on any one intersection." BASEMENT: I was wondering - it felt like it might be a bad idea. I think I never ended up trying it. 28:38 "Finance should be the first department ever built. Never having it has slowed this city significantly." BASEMENT: You may very well be right. This pace felt about right to me, but maybe that's because I'm used to slow progress because I don't take advantage of early 100k bonds. 31:40 "Without a University with School of Engineering, industry can't survive at high density." BASEMENT: That's good to know. In earlier years I've done high-density residential and commercial with medium density industrial, which means more of the map had to be industrial. 36:08 "I like these edits." BASEMENT: Crossstreets! :) 38:20 "Since you're starting to make Tier 2 services, the Tier 1 services aren't needed." BASEMENT: I don't like bulldozing Tier 1 clinics and police stations though, as that puts sick/injured sims on the street as well as criminals. I suppose one needs to bite that bullet at some point though, unless they want to spend money on unnecessary services. 39:26 "What I did in my games was draw a dirt road behind the hospital to fit the modules that require roads." BASEMENT: That's a good idea. I'll need to keep that in mind in future cities. 42:43 "It also allows $100k bonds, which are a big deal early on." BASEMENT: As we've discussed. :) 45:11 "Yes, you really do fly to City Hall every morning once it's built." BASEMENT: That's AMAZING. Especially if the Mayor's Mansion is right next to City Hall! Ha ha ha! 48:19 "Approval rating goes up as buildings max out happiness & stay that way; ideally, you do it at low density with a density freeze to drive it up fast." BASEMENT: Ah, I'll need to try this trick someday. 49:20 "Basically, the two departments that only Gambling cities care about." BASEMENT: I want to try gambling at some point in this series, but I'm a bit nervous about it. I've only tried adding a few casinos a couple of times many years ago, and it didn't go very well. I'll need a lot of police before I give it a try, I think. 50:46 "It's a good city, but I wouldn't want to be your neighbor. Those high school buses will ruin neighbors' education. This plot could've been so much more, but a maxed out Mayor's Mansion is a nice consolation prize." BASEMENT: Thanks for the kind words at the end here. I'm definitely going to get rid of those high schools (and the bus stops) pronto and hope the damage to the region is mitigated. Next city isn't connected by highway, but city #3 is and it's my university city. I think this city's high school may have stolen some of my students and slowed my research projects, but I did much of that off-camera, so not too big a deal for viewers.

@@BasementLetsPlay 3:13 Not exactly. Sewage water table respawn emanates from the center of the Sewage Treatment Plant, but water pumping station modules pump water back up based on the location of the individual modules. Ideally, the Sewage Treatment Plant would be surrounded by a snake-like pattern of modules from the water pumping station. This isn't always possible, though, and so long as the water table is dark blue, recharge will spread toward the lighter shades on the water map. 19:43 Just one empty gap doesn't matter. But repeat that mistake across an entire grid on a city, and it adds up to a lost row of buildings or another road. 20:08 IGN is wrong. High density industry has hazmat fires. Tech level is irrelevant to hazmat fire. 25:44 With a good zoning pattern, you don't need crossed fingers. Just cross-streets. 45:11 The City Hall must also build a landing pad for the flight to happen. 48:19 Except you maxed out your Mayor's Mansion in the next video, so you did. Nice job.
@BasementLetsPlay3 жыл бұрын
VERY interesting about the sewage and water plants. I never knew that. Hmm. Nice pun about crossed fingers and streets. :D re: the landing pad on city hall - aren't municipal airports bad (stealing sims from cities)? do I need to do the airport Great Work to unlock this, then?

@@BasementLetsPlay Students don't fly on municipal airports. It's the easily avoided module on the Airship Hangar that would leave a city vulnerable. Simcopter 1 is for the mayor and no one else.
