When it was mentioned by the interviewer that Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi must have been an inspiration: "It very much was--I first watched it in 2006. The film presented the world in a way I never really looked at before and that captivated me. Moments like these compel me to physically express progressions in my thought, I have just happened to do that through the form of creating these cities in SimCity 3000. I could probably have done something similar--depicting the awesome regimentation and brutality of our society--with a series of paintings on a canvas, or through hideous architectural models. But it wouldn't be the same as doing it in the game, because I wanted to magnify the unbelievably sick ambitions of egotistical political dictators, ruling elites and downright insane architects, urban planners, and social engineers." and yet he himself is an architecture student. Just looked at what this website was asking him and they asked was there anything wrong with this city that we dont know about? Or along those lines and this was in his (the guy who made this city,Magnasanti) answer There are a lot of other problems in the city hidden under the illusion of order and greatness--suffocating air pollution, high unemployment, no fire stations, schools, or hospitals, a regimented lifestyle--this is the price that these sims pay for living in the city with the highest population. It’s a sick and twisted goal to strive towards. The ironic thing about it is the sims in Magnasanti tolerate it. They don’t rebel, or cause revolutions and social chaos. No one considers challenging the system by physical means since a hyper-efficient police state keeps them in line. I think the second song, starting at 0:18, is heavily processed and may even be slowed down. With that in mind, an interview with the designer indicates he was influenced by Philip Glass who composed music for a movie called Koyaanisqatsi. Slowing that soundtrack down sounds similar to the middle track here. #2 "Vessels" seems the closest. The instrumentation was probably changed from organ to a guitar effect.

An inescapable prison where the prisoners may leave at will, with walls built not around bodies, but minds. A tomb populated by its own architects. Magnasanti welcomes you.

This is one of those 'oh there is something Wrong with you' pieces of art and I mean that as a sincere compliment. There's something about a slightly deranged work that rewires your brain and it's great.

I'm just happy the creator of Magnasanti focused his effort on Sim City and not real world regime change to topple world democracies and install totalitarian dictators who's only goal is peak efficiency and population density by any means necessary.

Why is this video fucking terrifying?
@XxDTownxX9111 жыл бұрын
Probably because of the satanic music, and because of how much time he spent on a Sims project. Seems like a sociopath.
@tankermottind11 жыл бұрын
It's terrifying because it's an inhuman, uniform, brutalist city that perfectly encapsulates the values of 20th century totalitarianism. It's amazing as a technical accomplishment but goddamn it would be a terrible place to live. It's like a fascist dream city and should be rendered in a tileset of slab-sided concrete box buildings. Also that population graph at 6:40 ELDERLY CITIZENS ARE UNPRODUCTIVE. ALL CITIZENS MUST REPORT FOR TERMINATION AND RECYCLING AT AGE 55. THE STATE HAS PROVIDED ENTERTAINMENT FACILITIES FOR YOUR COMFORT AS YOU AWAIT PROCESSING.

Imagine an urban hellscape which extends infinitely on into the horizon, yet there is no reason to explore anywhere as it is nothing but a deliberately engineered matrix of perfectly repeating sectors. This is the hell of the human spirit. This, is Magnasanti.

The fact there are several of these cities he made, and the meaning of their names, makes it seem like they exist in the same world, probably as part of some unimaginably efficient totalitarian empire, that spans both the entire globe and the entire future after its establishment.
@Jihon8311 жыл бұрын
Someone built the dead city of Rlyah in SimCity 3000? Good for them. Though I doubt they could do that with SimCity 2013, as that uses the awesome power of Glassbox. You know, the game whose AI is so advanced and demanding that the game needed to be always-online! Oh wait, nevermind.

Dude oh my fucking god. I have never played one of these games but that seems really impressive. All the the planning, the interweaving components of the city for maximum effectiveness, and you actually based the designs off of historical and mathematical symbols. This is art at the apex of technicality.
