SimCity 4 is one of my favourite games of all time, and one of the finest city builder games ever created, so this week, I'll be revisiting this classic, starting off by founding the beautiful little town of New Jonton...

SimCity 4 will always have a special place in my memories. I remember being 6 or 7 years old when I got my copy (late 2005 I wanna say) and playing it on a Dell Dimension 2400. The lag was unbearable at times but I poured my little child soul in to that game. The soundtrack alone (particularly the "Area 52" track) makes me incredibly nostalgic. Thank you for doing this LP, it's nice to see some people still playing this excellent game in 2016.

16:50 Roads Rule in New Jonton, but Streets Becoming Endangered? What does that even mean? I love watching city builders. I am dreadful at them myself, but I just get such a satisfaction over watching everything just move around. I can't wait to see more. Thanks for the video!

Niel Fairbanks, your City Planning adviser, doesn't like it when you use more roads (or avenues and highways) than necessary. The problem is he's VERY picky about it. If you look at the way cities are laid out in real life, you'll notices roads tend to be in areas with higher traffic, while the opposite is often true for streets, especially in suburbs. This video by MATN isn't a good example of how to play SC4. You'll notice late in the video he bottlenecks ALL commute traffic into the industrial sector on a single road.

On the main screen, the oval on the top left, with a map-looking texture on it, well, if you open it, you can choose other large region maps, one is actually London, another is Berlin, there are a few more in there too, plus, you can create your own Large Region maps, with city areas. You can have the whole region be flat with nothing but grass, or break into the terraforming tool, and do pretty much anything you desire (I used to have a continental North America map, from Canada to Mexico). The nicest thing about this game is this, you can incorporate nearby areas and make them set up for nothing but power/landfills/industrial. effectively limiting pollution for the nearby populated cites (they will commute to work there, when you connect them). The industrial power centers/areas can be used to sell power back to nearby areas/population-commercial centers, with power lines, linking nearby areas the same you can with roads. The smaller areas are ideal for this. It also leaves you more area for your regional population, which will unlock better things down the line. Sticking to lower/light zoning is best to start out. Taxes are the teeter-totter that everything else hinges on, and if you start out with them low for things like the rich, and jack them up for the poor, you will keep a lot of crime away, which is a big problem later on, especially if you end up with a bunch of arsonists, or riots...fire can decimate your cities pretty fast. Schools and higher education are also key to building a successful city, you won't need so many police when your educated Sims are rich and happy. It all feeds into an upward-spiral of growth, if you take care, and don't try to change too much, all at one time. You do have to watch when terraforming, it can be steeper than it looks like sometimes...a good rule to go by, is that trees will grow where houses can usually go. You can use shift to enlarge your area effect area when terraforming, and control will shrink it (or vice versa), which is handy, and will keep you sane when doing rivers...Smoothing is a good idea, and so is wind erosion...and add as many trees as you can, while they are free. They keep pollution down. Well, I could probably write you ten books on this, but, that should be enough to get you going for now. Rush hour is pretty cool, and will also help keep you sane, and, you can drive the cars around, but, I'm sure you saw all that in the tutorial map in Timbuktu...I usually stay off that map, because once you save to it, it's pretty much permanent (unless if you change it back or exit before saving a city there, no city=no changes), and being a default map that I hardly go to, because of the tutorials I leave that one alone, so it's file size remains the same... :)

Well, I don't think Jon is a stranger to reading anything at length. and, like I said towards the end of it, I could write about ten books on parts of it. It makes me wish I still had my old hard drive, with my earlier work, My North America map was quite a bit of work, I already had the whole East Coast populated, and had worked across to past Detroit. Then I'd started on the West Coast, and had most of it squared away.

SC4 is one of my favourite games ever. I always found building another city full of agriculture next to your main city to be a good tactic as it removes that agricultural desire for your main city. Another very good city building simulation that's a bit more modern is Cities: Skylines, which came out in 2015. Those guys have clearly played loads of SC4 and loved every bit of it.

Jon, just so you know, the reason moose doesn't pluralize like goose does 'ie geese/meese' is because goose is a germanic word, and follows their rule of vowel tightening. Moose is from native american language, and thus doesn't follow the same grammar.
