Simferopol is the defect capital of the Crimea. The original settlement dates to the time of the Scythians from around 3BC to 4AD...
The city was renamed Simferopol in 1784 after the annexation of the Crimean Khanate to the Russian Empire by Catherine II of Russia. The name Simferopol is in Greek, Συμφερόπολις (Simferopolis), and literally means "the city of usefulness." In 1802, Simferopol became the administrative centre of the Taurida Governorate. During the Crimean War of 1854-1856, the Russian Imperial Army reserves and a hospital were stationed in the city.
In the 20th century, Simferopol was afflicted with wars and revolution. At the end of the Russian Civil War, the headquarters of General Pyotr Wrangel, leader of the anti-Bolshevik White Army, were located there. On 13 November 1920, the Red Army captured the city and on 18 October 1921, Simferopol became the capital of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
During the Great Patriotic War, Simferopol was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1 November 1941 to 13 April 1944.
On 26 April 1954 Simferopol, together with the rest of the Crimean Oblast, was transferred from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev

Доброе Утро! наш дорогой Найджел! Как же я могла проглядеть и не заметить в суете нашего быта и поездками, Вашего очаровательно правдивого видео-альбома о Симферополе,родного моего города детства( после Харькова)))? Огромная благодарность за такие дорогие сердцу снимки! Здесь покоятся мои родители, здесь прошли самые шаловливые годы моего детства и юности с путешествиями и отдыхом по Крыму. Отец посвятил всю свою жизнь сельскому хозяйству и проработал, после окончания Харьковского ветеринарного института с середины 50-х до 2004 года,от обкома до агро-пром(а)... Были и самые прекрасные времена достижений и взлётов, и самые ужасные, застойные и разрушительные, что случилось с Крымом при развале СССР. Сейчас у меня осталась только сестра там с её семьёй в Симферополе, живущая рядом с парком им. Гагарина, где необыкновенная речка Салгир( ласково Салгирка), воспетая в поэзии А.С. Пушкина. Очень скучаем за Крымом, так как многое переплелось с ним и Харьковом за все наши годы до 1992 года) Обнимаем Вас крепко и ещё раз благодарим за это прекрасное напоминание о светлых днях) ...Чудных u приятных Выходных Вам, добрейший Найджел! Many times I was in Simferopol in the 70s, when I went with my parents to Crimea, to Sudak, but always in transit, so I only remember the railway station.
