Sanskrit and Tamil are two ancient languages which have had a profound impact on many other languages. These two languages have a lot in common, including some similar vocabulary, as well as words that are not exactly the same but follow the same thought process. In this video we showcase some of the words found in common between these two languages, with Aanandi (Sanskrit speaker) and Abishek (Tamil speaker) challenging each other with a list of words and sentences.

Sanskrit (संस्कृतम्) is an Indo-Aryan language and one of the oldest Indo-European languages. It is closely related to many Indo-European languages, either living or extinct, including Latin, Hittite, Luwian, Old Avestan and many others. It is the primary liturgical language of Hinduism and some texts of Buddhism and Jainism. Many languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Urdu, Dogri, Maithili, Konkani, Assamese, Odia, and Nepali have their roots in Sanskrit, while many languages outside of the Indian subcontinent, including Iranian languages, as well as several European languages, have close relations to Sanskrit. Today, Sanskrit is still spoken as a primary language in some parts of India. The impact that Sanskrit has had on other languages outside of the Indian subcontinent is very significant. Sanskrit manuscripts and inscriptions have been found in China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia, Thailand, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Japan, and other parts of the world. It is very common to find words that are derived from Sanskrit in languages beyond the Indian subcontinent, with significant influence across Asia including Chinese, Sino-Tibetan languages, Thai, Khmer, and Lao which contain many loanwords from Sanskrit. Austronesian languages, such as Javanese, Malay, Tagalog, and Indonesian, also derive a portion of their vocabulary from Sanskrit. In addition, European languages, including English, also contain words derived from Sanskrit.
The Tamil language (தமிழ்) is classified as a Dravidian language and mainly spoken by the Tamil people of India and Sri Lanka. In addition to India and Sri Lanka, Tamil also has official status in Singapore. In Malaysia, Tamil is used as one of the languages of education along with English, Malay and Mandarin. Aside from Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, in India, Tamil is also spoken in the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tamil is considered one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world and its vocabulary has impacted many languages, including non-Dravidian languages.

*Please read the following two statement by Aanandi and Abishek* - Aanandi's comment regarding part of this video: A minor correction. I said the original word is ‘Raatrin’ while explaining the word ‘Raatrau’ in the sanskrit sentence. But I am afraid I am wrong. The original word is ‘Raatri ‘ (रात्रि) which works like ‘mati’ (मति). However, the word ‘Raatrau’ (रात्रौ) which I have used in the sentence is correct. - Abishek's comment regarding the flags. Note: As is the case with other videos on this channel, the participants in the video have the final say on the flags in the thumbnail. I do everything else! Abishek wanted both the flag of India and Sri Lanka to appear, so please read his comment: I kept myself unbiased and not provoking someones feelings! I'm a Chennaite , from Tamilnadu, India. Though me being an Indian , seeing previous videos why not add them to cos they are not migrated Indians they live in the north east part of Sri Lanka for years! Other Tamizhs are migrated from India to Singapore, Malaysia etc,. And also Sri Lankan Tamils to Canada , Germany etc. I also gave pure Tamizh equivalents to the Sanskrit words and please check it out again. I might have made a mistake in Konkani as I said it's spoken in South India along with Tulu beary etc,. I'm immensely proud of being Tamizh not to provoke someone because of my language but to spread love through it and admire other cultures too! "யாதும் ஊரே யாவரும் கேளிர்" Sanskrit and Tamil are two ancient languages which have had a profound impact on many other languages. I am from Gujarat and my mothertongue is Gujarati. When I shifted to Tamilnadu for fellowship and job for few years, I learnt Tamil and my sanskrit base has helped me a lot. Many many many words are almost similar (may be pronunciation are different). I was surprised to know that. It was a wonderful experience for me and especially people of tamilnadu are so helpful in every way and that helped me a lot to learn Tamil. Even I learnt to write and read in 1year only 😊. Now I returned to Gujarat, but still missing always helping people of tamilnadu and food also. ❤️Tamilnadu

@Hashan Silva All the European languages origin from Sanskrit and the sanskrit origin from TAMIL. Tamil is the oldest and only Tamil peoples use sanskrit in their mantras and prayers. Tamil is the only language in the world to meet all 11 criterias to be classical language. Wheress Sanskrit, Greek, Chinese, Latin, Hebrew, persian languages do have only 6-7.criterias to be a classical languages. This proves that Tamil is the oldest and mother of all languages

@EXTREME so what ?Not only in malayalam but also in kannada, telugu, hindi have loan words. As our language has more loan words, mallus are apt for learning hindi and other languages. malayalam pronunciation is sweeter, and softer than other languages(see the songs). U cant even read a malayalam word even if we write it into tamil as it is because tamil has the least number of alphabets so that ur pronunciation level is very week. U dont know which letter will be used in certain tamil words Itself In tamil ka (க )is used for kha, ga and gha. Similarly for all other consonents. Malayalam has a large set of alphabetic series than other languages so we can use the letters according to the pronunciation of a word which is in english or tamil. We can translate any other language sentences or songs exactly into malayalam. Most of the tamizh peoples struck their tongue to say the ZHA (ழ,ഴ), ങ്ങ (ங்ங ), ഞ്ഞ (ஞ்ஞ) ,ശ്ശ (ஶ்ஶ),ന്ന (ந்ந)etc in tamizh😂. Nothing to say more than this🙏

May be, this video's title should have been Sanskrit words adopted in Tamil! Tamil has its own vocabulary for almost everything - you won't believe how rich its vocabulary is! Thakaval = vivaram = information, Vennilaa = chandrikaa = white moonlight, kathiravan = sooryah = sun, thirai = tharangah: = wave, malai = mountain, panth = kandukam = ball, veetu = gruham = house, ... By the way, I am a Malayali. I had learned Sanskrit till my 10th grade.

Not Adapted, Why Tamil needs to adopt vocabulary from Sanskrit? These words are forcefully imposed. After 12th century Complete education, religion and other influential jobs were in the hands of one particular community. And they hail sanskrit as deva baasha. They called tamil Neesha baasha. That's why Tamil has lots of sanskrit words. Also they introduced manipravala nadai, It is a hybrid language, typically written in the Grantha script which combines Sanskrit lexicon and Tamil language. This is how malayalam script and language was born. Successfully they split TN and Kerala.

@@yuvanm411 - Languages evolve by mixing up, by giving and taking. There are many words in Tamil which are taken from Sanskrit. For example: Sheekhram = Sheekhram = quickly, Sooriyan = Sooryah: = sun, vipath = vipath = accident, Rajaa = Raajaah: = king, paTi = paTh = to read, punitham = punyah: = effect of good deeds, manithan = manushyah: = human being, adhikam = adhikah: = surplus, more, and so on. Unlike other South Indian languages, Tamil indeed has its own vast vocabulary for most words used in day-to-day life. Efforts by the Tamil Nadu governments to coin new words based on pure Tamil words are very much to be appreciated. For example: Kaal-panth-aattam = football (kaal = foot, panth = ball, aattam = play, game), Vaan-oli-nilayam = Aakaash Vaani (Radio Station, vaan = sky, oli = voice, nilayam = house, station). By the way, Nilayam is a word adopted from Sanskrit. Yet, Tamil too, as any other language, is susceptible to evolution by accepting words from other languages, and giving its own words to other languages. I have Hindi-speaking friends who use the words such as "Chummaa" (just), "Kutti" (small) in their conversations with us. Visibly, they are taking such words into their languages. I, as a Malayali, aspire to be fluent in Tamil. Yet, I think it wouldn't be wise to aspire for a puritanical state for any language.

Very good video and message brother. Tamil plays a big part in Malaysia, Singapore and neighbouring countries. Raja Raja Chozhan conquered Malaya (which comes from the word Malai or hills because Malaysia has a lot of hills and mountains). It was called Malai Nadu and Malai Oor. The Malayan people were called Malaiyur makkal. That's the reason why the Malay language spoken in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore (Malaai mozhi) originated from Tamizh and Sanskrit later part other languages. Culturally, Tamil plays a big part such as from human beings birth, living, death, wedding, darma concept, surgam, naragam, etc. Thank you 👍

These are the words in relatively pure Tamizh. Both Tamizh and Sanskrit has not borrowed from each other and are independent languages. But both are complementary. Both are divine languages. 1. @@sumit4640 Guys for your information don't conclude that Tamil came from sanskrit wise versa. Because ruling languages and ruler preferred language will change subjects or people of the place yes like wise today "if I say Nan bus la vanthen" the word bus is English word but due to frequent usage of English we replace Tamil word "perunthu" with "bus" that doesn't mean Tamil came from English. At that period rulers mostly preferred sanskrit over Tamil so people started using sanskrit word in Tamil sentences. But pure Tamil has no language linkages or support need to speak or write.

Similarly, the Hindu Bengali guy also chooses to use both flags so both are displayed. However, if you observe, the Pakistanis never ask to use an Indian flag as well for Urdu. We also use tons of Sanskrit loanwords with different pronunciation in Thai. I believe in many SEA languages as well. I cannot recognise all the equivalents for those words but here are what I recognise (Not sure about transcription of Sanskrit I heard): Wanam -> Wanah Forest Rahassiam -> written as Rahas (read as Rahad) we use it for a meaning of code or key Nakaram -> written as Nakara (read as Nakorn) city Sayahngalam -> Sahyan & Gahl I have never seen both used together but they mean evening and time. Katay, kathaa -> Khathaa I can mean story but usually mean like a spell. Ratrie -> Rahtrie Night Other words might also be used in Thai but I can't really recognise them. Even though Thai alphabet system also based on the same system as Sanskrit but the pronunciation and sounding systems are way too different. It's so difficult for me to recognise them without knowing the meaning. Maybe due to the conjugation that we don't carry over as well.

Indonesian language is now being changed by using a lot of English words... :) Sadly, the history is being lost and not know by people from Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Thailand. For e.g. Bangkok International Airport's name is Suvarnaboomi. Which means something like promising land..

Both derived from brahmi script that was written traditionally then translated into sanskrit and tamil according to comfort see brahmi script both their language get words similar tamilians doesn't modified brahmi much just curved some words in a flowy manner whereas sanskrit was written keeping in mind our sound but with totally new words using previous words of brahmi so i don't think their is a need to fight...basically both are same just time and places changed them separately~Courtesy An Indian from north

Dear Bahador brother, your efforts are priceless. We are from same and only source. This connect all of us. Here one sharing from me, the example Warthai... Wartha and Word in English, Warta in Malay and Indonesia are sharing the same word. I'm Indian origin born and raised in Malaysia. I'm able to analyse and research in languages since small age. I can speak and write Tamil, Malay and English. Now I'm learning Hindi and Urdu for research. Here I'm amazed and surprised with so much connection in words and writings. Once again I wish you all the best. I can also willing to support and contribute my findings in many languages. Thank you dear Bahador.

Hey Bahador, As a new special video idea can you do similarities between two ancient languages as well? I have always been fascinated by Latin and Sanskrit being similar since they are from the same language family but maybe and surely there are languages that aren't from the same family but are somehow related. For example the video about the link between Korean and Tamil was so fascinating. Just an idea :L btw i love your videos man keep up the good work! ♥️

Thank you @Bahador for brining people together! To those nitpicking things to find fault with, try doing this for yourself and publish on youtube if you aren't happy . There is an Indian flag and a Sri Lankan flag. The guy introduced himself as being from India. Regarding languages in India, There are at least 5 different language families each with multiple distinct languages and each language has multiple dialects. The major language families include Indo-Aryan (Mostly spoken in North, West and East India), Dravidian (Mostly spoken in South India), Austroasiatic (Spoken in east central India), SIno-TIbetan (Spoken in North-East and along the Himalayas), Kra-Dai (North Eastern India) and multiple language families with smaller representation (Such as Ongan).

Bahador's policy is that he asks the person which flag they wish to use and it is completely up to them. So that means that the Tamil guy has chosen to use both India and Sri Lanka. Similarly, the Hindu Bengali guy also chooses to use both flags so both are displayed. However, if you observe, the Pakistanis never ask to use an Indian flag as well for Urdu. Some things in life, you can't do anything about.

Do a video on chinese vs sanskrit. I want to know if there is anyword common between them or not. I always wondered how we are totally unaware about chinese eventhough we have living closest to each others for thousand of years. What could be the reason that there is zero influence of chinese in Indian languages and vice versa??

Liked this video. I appreciate your efforts to bring the similarities between two languages. India a diversified nation. Languages, cultures, practices are different from state to state. Every language is beautiful and unique by its own. In tamil we say "vetrumaiyil ottrumai kanbom". Ignoring the differences, we need to start appreciating the similarities within ourselves. We need to create a comfortable space for each and everyone living around us. Every state is like a family member of India. There should be harmony within family members for our India to grow greater heights.

Guys for your information don't conclude that Tamil came from sanskrit wise versa.
