Fun fact: Salaar has a lot of Mahabharatam references in it. Like the friendship between Vardha and Deva are like that of Duryodhana and Karna respectively. Karna being the first born of Kunthi Devi, had the right to the inheritance of Hasthinapur, but he chose to stay loyal to Duryodhana and fight to make him the king. Duryodhana was the only one who saw how great of a warrior Karna was and treated him as an equal while others treated him as lower than them because to them he was just the son of a charioteer. Duryodhana even gives Karna Angarajyam to make him a noble. Even though he knew the Pandavas are his younger brothers, he chooses to be loyal to Duryodhana and join the Kaurava. Just like Deva should be the rightful heir to the throne of Khansaar, but he stays loyal to his friendship with Vardha, and fights to make Vardha the new king of Khansaar because Vardha was the only one who was there to help Deva and his mother. Vardha even gives away his territory to make sure Deva and his mother are not harmed. Even though Deva knows he is a Shouryanga, he chooses to stay loyal to Vardha. You can also see how the character played by Bobby Simha (Bharava) takes inspiration from Sakuni. And “Shouryanga Parvam” is clearly a reference to the 18 Parvams in Mahabharatam. Edit: Another important Mahabharatam reference: Another powerful character from Mahabharatam which Deva draws similarities to is none other than Bheeshma. Bheeshma just like Deva could have been the heir to their respective kingdoms. However, Bheeshma, for the happiness of his father and stepmother renounced his birth right, and vowed celibacy so that he wouldn’t have any descendants who could claim the throne in the future. Just like Deva gave up his inheritance to Khansaar for Vardha. And what was the birth name of the almighty Bheeshma Acharya? Devaratha! 🤯 So Deva’s character is like a mix of Karna and Bheeshma.
