“Sounds like there is a compressor on it.” Am I missing something? ( if you look closely, behind him, the Dbx compressor is reducing deep into the red)

The compressor could be on a room mic... The point he was making about a "compressor sound" is cranking the preamp and attenuating the level with the fader.
@simonbezek63824 жыл бұрын
He tweaked the gain knob and lowered the fader so it started saturating, making it sound compressed. I think

No, dbx comps doing 30db of compression don't sound like that, yikes! Also, the compressor didn't move when he changed the gain... throwing an extra +30db of pre would have splattered that compressor ... so it's not on the snare insert (it's another mic) :P The "compression" he's talking about is the transformer stage saturation, etc.

For recording drums, Neve and API are the best. Simon Philips is not only a good drummer but a very good producer.... by the way, it is a very beautiful studio
@Architectureguy22 күн бұрын
There's a Jeff Porcaro video where he's instructing students, and in it he said he'd never trust an engineer who never came into the studio to hear the drums and the dynamics of them in the recording space. That's part of what made Simon a perfect drummer to follow Jeff in Toto!

Gee , how much is it for just that EQ setup , 21K ?

there is a dbx 160 in the background working with every snare hit..... so don't say that the preamp works like a compressor... when you hit it harder.... com'on Simon....

to me 10k + is often cute in solo but i find you can get build ups of the sweet stuff and it just ends up being trash

EQ makes it much louder than flat, no wonder it sounds better but how could you evaluate without context?! Its obvious no tutorial, its just an ad...

i did think that when the A/B happened like we are listening to quite a few db there. always really surprised to see experienced engineers abing without even slightly level matching. but maybe he's done it so long he doesn't actually AB and this was just for the tutorial i dont know

@@m.o.n.d.e.g.r.e.e.n Sometimes its just extremely expensive so it have to sound good. Maybe only the red neve-style buttons make it sound good sometimes :D

@@m.o.n.d.e.g.r.e.e.n It‘s common for experienced engineers to not level-match after processing. From a certain point on, you know how it sounds and what‘s changing and often times you push certain frequencies into the desired level you want them to sit in the mix anyway.
