I saw him once and Jeff Beck's 'there and back' tour. Had never heard of him, thought it would be a good concert. To this day, by far the best concert I ever saw, a force of nature. Beck and Phillips teamed up together. and the bass player and keyboard player were incredible as well. The drummer totally blew me away, Simon Phillips, and I didn't expect Beck to be that fucking good as well. Simon Phillips. Carl Palmer, and Neil Peart were the best I watched live yet. A close tie between Phillips and Palmer, both jazzy, Palmer faster but Phillips more creative and spontaneous.

Just days before JeffBeck T+B tour date Philadelphia. Simon held a drum clinic via Medley Music Ardmore Pa. Simon spoke calmly and generously to inspire us admiring drummers. Mid sentence of an explanation he'd commence with playing an example ... Space Boogie intro. It blew every attendees brain to bits. Simon is a disciplined + skilled musician of the highest caliber. Actually, I found a different video of him talking about that. He's right handed, but because he wanted 4 toms across the front, you have to raise the high one to fit the hi-hats at a level where you can play the snare. He didn't liked the way it looked so he ended up pretty much with the set he plays to this day - 4 toms across with the hi-hats setup very low. Two of his favorite drummers (mine too) are Billy Cobham and Lenny White, both of whom play this way (left-hand lead), so he changed.

Are the people who react on this video also superdrummers? Can you play what he drums? I like to hear it? Why do people like to put down others? Music is meant to connect people, not to make war! Otherwise join the army! I play drums too, also ambidextrous (= using all limbs in all ways)! What about oldfashion? Is newfashion using 8 limbs (= 4 arms and 4 legs)! I have not seen this people in real life so far! Simon Phillips is one of the greatest ever and a great personality! More groundbraking and lifechanging drummers are: Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker,Billy Cobham,Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart, Steward Copeland, Deen Castronova and not many more lately! Thanx Rolf @

Sorry, but Cobham already did most of the things Simon's doing here, only faster, more relaxed, more intense, funkier several years BEFORE Simon.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 4 жыл бұрын
@Simon Affolter NOPE, sorry, but you are wrong. Cobham's always been faster than Simon. He's also more powerful than Simon. He's always been more relaxed. Just look at how they hold the sticks. Cobham's arms don't flex, they are always relaxed. Look at Simon's arm, he tenses up a LOT more and his arms are skinny and definitely not anywhere near the shape that Cobham was at. Cobham was in insane shape back in those days. Simon's a great player, but he's copped a LOT of things from Cobham. Cobham could never play Space Boogie? Yeah, right. Sure he could. He didn't because first, off, he never played with Jeff Beck being asked to play that song and secondly, Cobham has nothing to prove to anyone, except you. Simon could definitely not have been able to handle the MO gig. I'm sure he could have copped some of it, but not like Billy. It wouldn't have come across the same since Simon has a more rigid, tense (rock) feel rather than Cobham's relaxed jazz feel.
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 4 жыл бұрын
@Simon Affolter Go watch this video of Cobham playing Stratus. Go to about :50 into the song and watch him completely manhandle that crash cymbal. He treats a big crash cymbal like a tiny splash. Full arm strokes. Simon couldn't do that. I doubt anyone could. Cobham had a way to attack a crash cymbal lightning fast as he stabs the cymbal and pulls back. That technique is something he did and Simon doesn't stab his cymbals like that. I haven't seen anyone stab a cymbal like that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGe3qH9smtSMm8U
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 4 жыл бұрын
@Simon Affolter Here's a 34 minute video of a bunch of Cobham solos dating back to the late 60's. WATCH THEM CAREFULLY. PAY ATTENTION. He's got moments were he's just fast as anyone out there today regardless of who they are that probably would have a tough time duplicating some of the things Billy was doing and the speed and power he was doing them at. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnndm56VraeAn9k I don't know how old you are, but I've seen Billy with MO in November 73, and also went to countless shows he did with his first few solo bands, and I sat literally about 15 feet away from him because my seats were right up front. I have seen Simon with the There and Back tour, so I saw him then too.. I have watched MANY Simon Phillips solos he's got posted and I have listened to all of the MO live sound board recordings that are available, which there are over 50 concerts so far. I have them all and have listened to them all. There are moments were Billy is incomprehensible as to what he's playing. As far as his time? He's got good time. It's just that with his first band with the Brecker Brothers, those guys didn't really rehearse much, just like MO didn't rehearse much either. They are more play the framework of the song, but it's more of an improvisational, loose jazz interpretations instead of a solidified song where it's played the same way night after night. Billy thrives on being spontaneous back in the 70's. That's how MO was. RTF, on the other hand, had everything written out, even their solos. Where's the "jazz" in pre-written solos and parts where you have to play it as written? That's NOT what Billy was about back in those days. Yes, he's calmed down a lot since the 70's as his approach doesn't require him to play like he used to. But he was still MUCH faster of a player than Simon has ever been. He's more powerful of a player. And he was the one that was coming up with these "patented" Billy Cobham licks that Simon has been duplicating since he started playing with Stanley Clarke. Face it. Simon has been emulating a lot of Cobham licks, etc. But Cobham was creating them for the first time, instead of copying someone else doing it before him. Don't get me wrong. I love Simon. I think he does an excellent job and I like his intelligence and the fact that he continues that style of playing. And I am a little jealous of Simon because he was able to get as good as he is and was able to create a great career doing his thing.. But many Simon fans don't necessarily understand where he got a lot of his stuff from. He does Cite Billy as one of his influences and I'm sure Simon would agree with me too. Go ahead and send him an email, he usually does respond. Billy had the first "Gong Drum" back in 1973 or 1974. Billy had the first set of Octobans. Billy was using tunable floor toms back in the 60's. Billy was the first (that I'm aware of) to play an inverted China type with his left hand ride on a right handed kit. Billy was first to use three floor toms in 1971. Tony Williams, Lenny White, Alphonse Mouzon, Dennis Chambers and Simon came MUCH later than that using 3 floor toms.. But they all got the idea from Billy. I do believe that Alphonse actually used 4 floor toms as that's what I saw him with when 11th House opened up for RTF. But again, Cobham was faster than Alphonse Mouzon and Alphonse was coping a lot of Cobham rolls, licks, etc. too.

Simon does the Rosanna-shuffle well, but somehow it is not his own thing. This drumpart was created by Jeff and the only thing Simon can do is covering, but he is a phantastic drummer and should go for his own thing. I think he did right leaving Toto, because this band forever will be connected with Jeff's style.

Can anyone out there tell me if Simon is left-handed? Way back in 1973 when I tried teaching one of my novice private drum set students to do his "rides" ( jazz or rock) with his left hand as does Simon, his old man had a fit! Of course, nowadays, lots of drummers mount a pair of hi-hat cymbals on the right side to avoid that problem..Ain't technology cool?!
