I'm at stage 4 cirrhosis of the liver and an immune disorder. I live with my 87 yr old mom who has dementia. I'm struggling to take care of myself because I take care of her. This song helps to reassure me that my faith in God will allow me to rest in eternal life with no more worries.

My Dad died on February 18 2020 from heart complications, I was 21 at the time and I now just graduated college (no thanks to the pandemic taking away our ceremony.) Simon and Garfunkel was one of my dad’s favorites and we played this song at his funeral. Today is Father’s Day and it’s been very difficult for me so far. My Dad was a Vietnam vet and a very loving man, I thought the least I could do for him today was talk about him here under one of his favorites. The most heartfelt song I’ve ever heard.

Gypsy Girl, so sorry to hear of your father's passing earlier this year. My 96 year-old father passed away in 2018 and I considered using this song at his funeral, but chose two other songs that were more appropriate for him. You certainly chose an amazing song and it is hard not to feel emotional after hearing it.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" is my favorite Opium song, because that, is the real meaning of what this song is all about. "Silver Girl" is actually the Opium "shining" needle "sailing" into a person's arm taking all the emotional, physical pain away. I've been a fan of this song for decades and only recently learned from an interview Simon did that the song was originally written with only the first two verses, inspired by some American gospel Simon had heard. The album's producer told Simon to add on another verse and give it a bigger ending. Simon's wife at the time was upset at discovering her first white hair and Simon wrote the third verse "Sail on silver girl" as a joking reaction to a white hair. I still love the song, but when that third verse starts part of me laughs knowing that this emotional song of support to those in distress was written partially in jest.

I'm sorry you lost your wife back then. But do you know that God promises a world, in which there will be no more war, disease or death on earth. For example, in Jeremiah 29:11,12 God says ,,For I well know the thoughts that I am thinking toward you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of calamity,a to give you a future and a hope. And you will call me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you." God foretells also that in this time loved ones that whe have lost, will come back to life again here on earth. Revelations 21:3-5 ...,,with that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” And the One seated on the throne said: “Look! I am making all things new.” Also he says: “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Jesus the Son of God put it this way:.."John 5:28 ...you shouldn't be surprised, because the time will come when all, who are in the graves will hear Gods voice and will come out. The future look's much better than most of the people expect, because God loves us and what he promises will not fail. If you are interested I send you an very interesting interactive textbook with the theme: Enjoy Life forever" www.jw.org/en/library/books/enjoy-life-forever/ This book is about what God will do in the very near future and how it can give you hope for the future. I wish you all the best for your future and send you my best greetings Michel

I have something i want to share with you about this song. Everytime I listen to this song, I cry like there is no tomorrow. I have been in the US Navy, I have been injured, shot, 20 stiches on my head..still not a tear. I used to listen to this song when I was in Malta in july 2015. At that time, I remember as it was yesterday, I was listening it with Aida, the only girl I have ever fell in love with. She dedicated this song to me, if in my life I would ever felt lonely, sad or in trouble, she would have been my bridge over trouble water. We were seating on her bed, with a laptop and listening to this song one next to the other. At the end of that very month, I had to leave Malta, without her, and i can swear to all what i care about in life, i left my heart, soul and whats left of me there, still seating on her bed listening to this song. I am sure that i will remember her all my life, every time I listen to this song. It has a place in my heart, as she will always have. Don't end up like I did. At 75 I have just bought my wife a house in small town, SC. We are so close to the Baptist church we can here the bells play old hymns on the hour. Music does have a magical transcending quality to it. Many of the 70’s songs takes me back when I met the love of my life over 50 years ago. She lies here beside me asleep in the night.

@@marycooney It has not always been smooth sailing. My Mary and I are opposites. My many years with the (old) FBI made me skeptical of almost everything. Mary is a very spontaneous amorous girl from the KY mountains. She is a hugger while I’m a deep thinker. Our common ground is our love for the Bible and Jesus Christ. When it works for you remember God’s mathematics is 1+1=1.

Wow! What a story of resilience in the face of pain! Thanks for sharing what must be a very painful experience for you! By your wounds we're healed! Your stillborn's death is not in vain! Your stillborn reminds us that even when we feel like Job, it's still better to go through tough times than come out stillborn. Your stillborn child will probably meet Job one day and be his teacher, saying: "Job, you lost everything and your health, and you envied me? Are you serious? If I had your life, I'd be so happy! To gain! To lose! To be healthy! To be sick! To recover! What a rich tapestry of experiences! What were you complaining about?" I think parents can be disappointed in what appears to be 'lost potential' in a stillborn. But we have to remember that God's thoughts and ways are higher than our own. And He knows how to work all things together for the good of us who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Your stillborn never had the chance to do anything good or evil. And yet, your stillborn is still loved by you and by all of us. Isn't your stillborn better off than the villains of history? Doesn't this prove to all of us that since all of us are selfish, and yet, we can love a stillborn who died before this stillborn can do anything for us, then our God, who is Love itself can love us completely independently of our daily performance? If your stillborn deserves love, don't you also? Don't we also? Of course! Even if we die today and don't finish all our tasks, do we deserve love? Yes. Even if we die today and our bills haven't been fully paid, do we deserve love? Yes. Did you invest in your stillborn? Yes! You had to be extra careful, you had to eat right, you couldn't do whatever you pleased. Did you get a cent of it back? No! But do you resent it? No! Why? Because you love your child, and you never expected anything from your child, and you just wanted your child to be happy. If anything, you feel bad, because you wanted to give your child more. Listen, if that's how we feel about one stillborn child, how do you think God feels about us living adults? If there is so much value in one stillborn child, just imagine how much value there is in each of us, nonstop! God sees us as assets, people, not liabilities! Remember that!

Music that we hear on earth, could not mathematically exist without the discipline of math known as Calculus. That math explains and allows how the notes relate to one another as the melodies and harmonies cause sounds that go together although those same notes come from different octaves. And singing is the only exercise of which we know that uses both halves of the brain at the same time. What’s more, it’s not a biological thing that could have evolved. Calculus had to have been in existence before the beginning, however you ascribe that event. Else, a “Big Bang” couldn’t have happened.

My grandad passed just over two weeks in hospital. This was his favourite song. I wasnt able to see him for the final month due to his condition but in his final moments I thought to this song and raised a glass to him. I later heard it was playing as he went. A great man passing to a great song.

I'm with you. Definitely among the best songs ever written. It's beautiful poetry AND beautiful music and I love the gospel version Aretha Franklin but this is equally as beautiful. Garfunkel's voice is like an angel and 70% of this recording is just piano and Art Garfunkel, only the climax outro is done with a big production. It almost doesn't need the production. The purity of the voice with the piano is so intimate and expressive it's even more touching!

@@losangelesmusicteachers-bu3034 There's several demo's of this song (and others, of course) floating around on KZbin. The one that's closest to the final version but without the production at the end is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIPHf5h3etWMb80 It's almost better than the album version, it's sort of a simpler version. I'm pretty sure you'll quite like it. A much earlier one is one where Paul is singing it, before he wrote the third and final verse. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIPHf5h3etWMb80 It's clear that it's a more raw version, but I always love hearing Paul singing falsetto, even if it's just sort of a rough draft of the final song. Although I think if I absolutely *had* to pick one version, it'd be the Central Park one. Though that might not be my final choice.

It is a song that touches the depths of your soul . I was listening to the song our youngest sent me for our mother/son dance at his upcoming wedding . Actually, he is astonishing live. He has such a unique voice, that doesnt need recording "make up" ,try to see and listen his early 60's lives with Paul, or the legendary concert in central park. He's one of the few great "pop/rock" artists who can sing live as good, or even better than recording, as his pitch, precision, timber, intensity, flow of emotions are heavenly delivered anytime he sings. He gives all his soul to his voice, and that's maybe why so many say that he doesn't simply has a beautiful voce, but the voce of an angel.

Three days after returning from Vietnam having traded his arm, leg and eye for two purple hearts and a bronze star, my uncle sang this song to my 10 year old cousin who was in the hospital being treated for leukemia. He sang it at her funeral a few weeks later. Every time I hear it I can see my uncle standing there at the front of the cathedral singing this song in front of 600 people and a tiny white casket holding the mike in his remaining hand while leaning on a crutch. He who had sacrificed so much had more to give. He told me my cousin was the bravest person he had ever met. That coming from a man who almost died and lost body parts on the battle field while attempting to rescue comrades. He who could have gone home leaving Vietnam behind instead volunteered for not one but two more tours of duty. He who was shot in the leg and then patched up and volunteered for one more mission and lost his arm, eye and later the leg to infection, thought a little girl in a hospital bed was braver than he was. Typical hero type. Typical soldier. To quote him "just doing my job." Typical.

As a child in the 70's I hadn't been through enough to really get this song. It was overplayed on the radio too - it was the background muzac of my childhood. As a teen, getting my heart broken and taking drugs, I would secretly cry to this song. I wondered what was wrong with me: it was the schmaltziest, daggiest song from my childhood. It wears it's heart on it's sleeve, which is not a very rock and roll thing to do. But as a middle aged man, with years in recovery from addiction, and so many of my friends dead, this song is the closest thing I've heard to the voice of God. It tells me, when I'm weary and feeling small, that I am not alone, that I am held and understood. Love to all of you who know what I mean x

When I was a little boy, 10 years old, my older brother who was 17 bought this album and put it on the stereo. I distinctily remember hearing Bridge Over Troubled Water for the first time and thinking, "This is what angels sound like when they sing to God", which was a bizarre thought for a 10 year old boy who didn't go to church regularly or grow up in a reliigous housefhold. However the thought and feeling I felt at the time still exist in this 60 year old man 50 years later. They still sound like angels when they sing together. Thank you Mr. Simon and Mr. Garfunkel for bringing me so many years of joy.

I just recently turned 40 and I like music from many eras... I feel the same way with them and others such as Jay Black and the Americans especially with their hit Cara Mia, and just about anything from Connie Francis. Others such as Dusty Springfield, Same Cooke, The Righteous Brothers, The Mamas and the Pappas, and many more... You rarely find music today that has the vocal talent of those from the 50s and 60s... one of the few would be the group Pentatonix... They are amazing, but most music in the past 5-10 years has been trash...

It’s impossible to believe this song is 50 years old. It’s still one of the most beautiful and moving songs ever. The first time I saw a video of Art from the last 10 years or so I felt sad because he can’t sing it like he used to. He can’t hit those notes anymore. But then I thought,”But he did. He was perfect. And we have it for always.” One music publication called it ‘The Song of the Decade”. I think it’s a “Song for the Ages”.

I saw Art with Paul in 1966 and Art live do Bridge in 2019. The notes were still true, albeit with less power. Tears flowed as I listened

Call me cosmic, but I believe everything exists forever in its own time. It's just that we're not in that moment anymore. Imagine seeing him perform it back in the day, hey.

I heard God speak directly to my heart when I was going through a very difficult time in my life. I was passively listening to the radio and this song came on. In my heart I heard Him say, “Sail on silver girl, sail on by…Your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on their way…See how they shine!” My heart leapt and it literally took my breath away! This song still gives me goosebumps and will forever be a reminder of His encouragement during that very sad and lonely time.

Probably the best song I`ve ever heard. I remember first hearing it while still at school in 1970. I`m now about to retire and it hasn`t lost any of its magic......... It`s a classic !
