How and why I print my photographs

In this episode I briefly talk about how I print my photographs in Photoshop and why I think it's important to print to improve your photography and appreciation for the finer details.
I've been investing a lot of time into printing because of an photography exhibition event I hosted on the 15th September. I believe that it's been time and money well spent so I felt it was important to record a video to give a brief overview of what I've been very busy with. It's not a deep dive tutorial but hopefully you'll pick up some tips on preparing your image in Lightroom, printing from Photoshop and perhaps feel inspiring to print and frame your photographs more often.
I'll be talking about my exhibition in a future video so please look out for that. Many thanks for watching!

About 20 years ago a friend of mine bought the newest Nikon DSLR and sold me some of his old film equipment. Seattle has first rate parks and a beautiful Japanese garden, and I’d often shoot in these places. When my photography began to improve I made some prints. Seeing the images enlarged to 11”x14” was pure magic. Love your process - your images look so natural, unlike some popular landscape photographers.

Thanks, Simon, for this great video. So many of the things you said really hit home with me and I've made a promise to dedicate myself to doing more printing. As you said, it is so easy to get wrapped up in posting on the Instagram, Facebook, etc., putting big, beautiful images on the small screen. I've forgotten what a joy it is to see my images come out of the printer-sometimes like a miracle. In many ways, I think the essence of landscape photography for the photographer is printing images. After all, Ansel Adams didn't have Instagram and his legacy is his large and beautiful images, along with the many books of his work that were published. Ansel printed almost all his work himself, while we now have the luxury of advanced technology to print ours. Like him, I think the images we print remain as the legacy of our work-and in your case, your images go to people who value your work enough to pay for them. Although I've done a fair amount of printing in the past, your video was a good refresher for me. I'm going to order a bunch of Fotospeed paper; I can't get it in Italy, but will have it shipped from England. Good paper for printing photographs is hard to find here, and ridiculously expensive when you do. Also, I agree with Sean Tucker, your packaging looks fantastic! Thanks again, Simon. I hope you are doing well.

I really enjoyed the exhibition, like you say seeing them in the flesh, you really get a feeling of the effort and love that has gone into them. Thank you Simon for taking the time to have a chat. It was well worth travelling all that way. I ended up in a woodland and didn’t go to the abbey. Simon, I loved this video. I think all of us amateur photographers can learn a lot from actually printing our keepers. Of course we all may not have the means to print our own but finding a reputable printing site or company is probably a good start. To see the professionalism you use both in the process and packaging is truly inspiring.

Hi Simon - I found your channel via Thomas Heaton. This is one of the first videos of yours that I've watched and I just want to say Thank You for promoting the benefits of printing. I totally agree with you about the tactile experience you get from a picture which you can hold in your hand, frame, put on a wall and then experience every day. The picture becomes part of your home when it's on a wall, part of your life. Putting images online is great, it serves a valuable purpose. But to really experience a picture and fully enjoy it - that needs ink, paper and somebody who knows what he/she is doing when it comes to processing, papers, calibration, profiles etc. I consider printing to be the third artistic skill in digital photography - first is getting the image in camera, second is editing, third is printing. Get these three right and you're good to go.

Excellent post. Quick note on the Pixima Pro 1000. Great printer but once the ink absorber gets full the printer needs to go to Canon for service. Best way not to fill the ink absorber is to always print with boarders. Borderless prints will fill the absorber much quicker. Keep up the great work

You're absolutely right about printing. "The proof is in the printing". Why spend thousands of dollars/pounds on high quality camera bodies and the best lenses if all you do is web photos? If I did that I'd buy a crop sensor body and an 18-300 zoom. No one could tell the difference in the Internet.

#SimonBaxter... great demonstration thanks, it gives me pause, and I think... What about, this shot and that... I come from a background of photographers in the family, professional etc. My dad must have taken more than, 30K images, prints and slides... over the years... Brother-in-law also, instilled, a love for photography, he taught me a lot... Said, David, a good and serious photographer, always has his camera and gear with him... You never know when that shot, with just the right light, will appear, never to be seen again... Got to be prepared if you want to get... He did fine prints of people, city, and rural life mostly, BW, LA, New York, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, in the mid 60's - late 90's and loved to share his ideas on filters, darkroom work, etc. Love your work, thanks for sharing... David Justiss P.S. I had no idea who you were, from the beginning to the end, only after I looked at your channel name, did I discover it... Peter McKinnon, always says who he is right from the start... He's a good model to follow, most of the professionals I follow, do... It helps with the branding.
