Hello Simon and may I say thank you so much for this video. Sorry this may be a bit of a rant, but a very nice one! I usually watch quite a few KZbin photographer channels as well as yours and enjoy different things from each but I always find yours so calming and relaxed whilst still being very informative. Not looking for sympathy or anything now, just want to give you a bit of perspective. I'm currently in hospital 24 days and counting! Getting over COVID and Pneumonia. Anyway, I haven't really felt like watching all the usual channels but knowing what you do with your videos I have watched and truly enjoyed every moment of this today and I just wanted you to know that it has helped me through my day, so thank you from the top of my heart. I really hope one day to be able to do one of your work shops. Many many thanks and all the best :) Jeff

Hello Jeff, that is by far one of the nicest, if not the nicest things anyone had ever written and I am completely and utterly warmed by it. I am so sorry to hear about what you have and are still enduring as I can only imagine it must have been and probably still is, a terrifying experience. As a small but non-the less heart felt incentive to keep you on the right track and the road to a full and speedy recovery, when all this is over drop me a line and we will sort something out.

You can't please everyone Anthony and sorry you find it a distraction. Over the years, I have had a lot of compliments over my music choices. I for one find images accompanied by music helps me feel the emotion of the image or place. Your Icon is a motorbike image and not wanting to pigeon hole you, but I reckon our music tastes are not the same.

Hi Simon. Couldn't bring myself to get up early enough to catch the video just as it was posted (I try to be first in line). I'v had a couple of Benbos, and they are pretty fascinating devices, although a bit ungainly. Trying to get all the various appendages correctly oriented is like trying to put a sport coat on an octopus. Loved the bracken shot (clearly suffering from Pinna Disassociative Disorder). Great tips. And now....I must go outside!

Hi Peter, trying to catch up on my comments. I think my tripod needs a service. It kept falling flat with the MF on it when the legs were splayed. The weight of the tripos on it's own is enough for it!

Great tips Simon, accompanied by super images as always. Coincidentally, I saw your fungi image from the WPOTY comp only this week. Having plenty of time whilst on lock down I spent a day going through my collection of WPOTY books and noticed your name. It has always been my highest ambition to have an image placed in this comp. No success yet! Ever since the WPOTY dropped the 'British Wildlife' section I have concentrated on the BWPA comp. I have had several images selected for final judging but have not made the cut... Yet! 😕. Will keep trying. Anyway, very relaxing yet informative video. Take care.

Here are two more suggestions. We tend to always hold the camera either horizontal of vertical. For long stemmed flowers, I like to deliberately cock the camera so that the stems create diagonal lines that head toward but not directly into a corner. Sounds odd but it adds a nice touch to many photos. It both creates strong diagonals and helps fill the frame. Since we always tend to see flowers spright up and down, angles can add interest. For flat flowers like daises, you can get diagonals from the stem in one direction and diagonals from the flower in the other. The other tip is to carry a 5 in 1 diffuser/reflector in a pocket. I use a 12 inch one that collapses its a bag that easily fits in a pocket. It is great to soften harsh light but the reflector placed strategically can give enough reflected light to backlight a subject.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Another one...I also have a white linen sheet that has two pockets in for sticks to slot into and I push the sticks in the ground so I then have a white curtain to diffuse the harsh light though.

Hello Simon, thank you for your video and showing 'your style' of macrophotography. Very useful! As a beginner I am going through quite some introduction videos, and what strikes me in yours is that you do not seem to use a flash. With yourself moving and insects moving, and the wind adding additional movement, how do you manage to get photos that are sharp and not too dark?
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
I would only photograph insects whilst they are roosting and in still conditions early or late in the day so long exposures are possible. Flash as the primary light source in nature is often unconvincing because of dark backgrounds (fall off) and lack of modelling. When I have used flash, I have done so with multiple guns and as many as four all firing at the same time.

I've owned a couple of Benbo Trekkers over the years; and though a good tripod, it is heavy. But the worst part about it, is when folding it back up. It's like fighting an octopus. It's not easy to carry either.

Hello Simon. I am still busy catching up on your videos after discovering your channel. I found it very interesting that you were using your old Benbo, which incidentally is short for Bent Bolt, which the whole tripod hinges upon. It is based vaguely on a WW1 machine gun tripod design. Benbo did a Mk2 tripod which is actually the biggest one they manufactured, this extends to around 6ft without using the centre column. I have both the Mk1 and the Mk2 which I have owned for many decades and they are both still in use and nothing has ever gone wrong with them. It's not often you see anyone on a KZbin channel using one of these very versatile tripods so this was great to see
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. How interesting, I had no idea that's where the name came from and it makes complete sense now! I knew about the Mk2 and the Trekker, which I also have along with a couple of Uniloc versions. These were all my go to tripods back in the day, often with flash guns and cameras mounted on them as a full high speed flash rig in the days before digital. I have to confess however, they've now gone back in the shed!

@@SimonBoothPhotography No worries and thanks. Yes I do have a carbon fibre tripod, but cannot get used to it, I'd rather suffer the weight, it is far better. My walk to my local macro spot is approx 1 mile, with camera gear in back pack, I shoulder my tripod, and when that one aches I've got another one to use, mind you it is a country lane walk to my place of choice and it usually takes me an hour to get there, because spot things on the way, stop and photograph, carry on, spot something... Couple of hours walking around spud wood ( just outside Lymm, Cheshire) then another hours walk home... Passes the day, retired now so gives me something to do. However not been out since lockdown ! Built myself a focus rail and play with that more at the moment, going to run out of flowers in the garden soon though, as I keep cutting them off and bring them in to shoot...

Ha! The mighty Benbo! Not sure which came first - Benbo then Uni-Loc or vice versa, but the same chap (designer?) was involved in both. I bought one many years ago having seen Heather Angel using one, in one of her many 'Nature Photography' books. I thought I had a 'MK1' but it is marked "Benbo 4". Finding this too unwieldy for day to day carry, I retired it (still on a dusty shelf, so it is) but years later, seeing a "bargain" on eBay, I acquired a massive 'studio sized' version Benbo - 36" (90cm) outer legs! - this does sterling work in, or very near home. People often roll their eyes when they see me fighting with an octopus, but - as you demonstrate - once set up it is uniquely adaptable and has some particularly useful functions. I love it - simply too heavy (and awkward) to carry far (especially as I age), but I wouldn't be without it.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry, I have the Benbo Mk1 along with two trekkers in the garage, but I honestly can't know where they came from? I couldn't for shame bring the Mk 1 out for the film though. It still works like new but has more silver than black paint and is currently covered in cobwebs, not unlike yours. I'm pretty sure the Benbo came first but they also do a baby Benbo, which back in the day all the nature photographers used to use for flower photography. I couldn't afford to have both back then and was always very envious. I also remember Heather Angel using one too, along with one of my old favourites, John Shaw who first alerted me to the sunny f16 rule :-). Back to the tripod, I have heard many funny descriptions about people wrestling with them and my favourite was always: like trying to take a photograph with a camera mounted on a set of bagpipes! I also like @PeterLewis reference to the same in the above comment!

@@SimonBoothPhotography It is so difficult at the moment, as you may know I work for North West Ambulance Service as fleet engineer. Unfortunately I'm on shielding and have to work from home, I'm managing to go three miles daily in my own car to a place where there are no people for exercise and photography as my mental health would suffer big time otherwise. I have always been an outdoors guy and love my macro and wildlife, your tips will aid me looking at the small world in a different way. Stay safe out there, I just hope I can when I have to be with people again. All the very best, and thank you. Andy

Hi Simon, first of all thanks for the video. I've been doing macro for some time but I was pleasantly surprised with softness of you background, I can't get that quite... 08:15 - 08:30 is what I mean, can I know your settings on those two photos? Is key maybe low f-stop? 5.6 ? Most of the time I can't get whole flower and stem in focus both at the same time while background is so smooth..If I go to F13 I don't get that soft background. Do you clone most of the picture?
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikola My medium format 100mm lens, which I use now gives a beautiful bokeh. However, both of those shots were taken with a 500mm prime at f4, which naturally creates a fast fall off of focus behind the subject. Crucially though, I do make sure that any backgrounds to my images are distraction free. So shooting in densely vegetated areas won't work with this type of shot. I don't clone any of the picture.

Just stumbled across this video, your application of the handheld guideline (it's not a rule) of 1/focal length as shutter speed is not correct. In normal photography this guideline accounts for the magnification of your movement due to focal length, thus it's magnification that's the factor here. A shot taken at 1:1 magnification will need a faster shutter speed than one taken at 1:5 magnification irrespective of the focal length because it is the relative movement of your hands with regards to the frame that's the thing you want to keep a check on...
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Karl but to keep things simple and to keep the nice flow of the video, I say the "general rule of thumb", as this allows flexibility in my statement as opposed to an absolute rule.
@karlgunterwunsch1950
@karlgunterwunsch1950 3 жыл бұрын
@@SimonBoothPhotography My point in this case is that no matter what the focal length is, at 1:1 magnification you need a much higher shutter speed to eliminate hand movement as a source for lack of sharpness. So for a 50mm macro lens the 1/50 second your rule of thumb gives you IMHO is much too long for a high magnification shot, even the 1/200 of a second for a 200mm macro lens may still be too long.

Simon Booth Hmm I went cold turkey a few years back. I would drink coffee 7 times each day about a pint each time. And sleep well No coffee for 3 years. Then on one of our anniversary’s I have a coffee after dinner one Saturday evening didn’t feel like sleeping till Monday morning. So I use coffee for tired driving, no more than once a day An architect I worked with got relief for his headache’s drinking coffee. Tried to tell him the coffee is the cause. Didn’t want to know It’s understanding what we put in our mouth
