Safety Nitpicking: Please move the chair a little away from the power outlet, that's like a fire hazard with the materials in clothing, any static/arc that happens with that plug catching that dry clothing hanging off the rail, and then with the clothes on the wall being a propagation point. Otherwise really nice on the chair! It comes off looking like something from the 1960s (?) too. I'm kind of sad you couldn't keep the circle shaped back rest 😥.

We should all get away from the being forced to wear "new clothes" everyday - either at work or school from society. I like wearing wool in winter, much warmer while still being light - and not smelly. Airing worn clothes makes huge sense - while also putting them not with fresh clothes. Maybe a half ladder could also work in small spaces. But I really like this chair - looks good at the end and you can do both - sitting while hanging clothes. 👍🥰

Ikea is one of the worst greenwashed companies ever - they cut down giant patches of old growth forests in Poland bc they have bad environmental laws just to make cheap plywood and actively built the fast furniture industry.. I think/hope simone wouldn’t do business with them. Everyone should invest in furniture made from locally sourced wood and made by well paid hands! :) And for all confused souls: I would never shame someone who is not able to afford/has no other options other than Ikea- but like other people pointed out there is still the opportunity to buy second hand furniture, which (atleast where i live) is considerably cheaper. My point in writing this comment was to inform people who dont know better and not to spread a political message or criticize anybody/thing other then the business practice of Ikea. I mean, it has a gimmick. just a very practical one. that really adds value, and is remarkably attractive too, the way Simone did it. could build an even more basic version without the rotating lazy susan base. that version would fit in smaller spaces too, because it wouldn't have to be round. In fact you could just add a really tall rack to a standard chair w/o expanding the footprint, for tight spaces. it could have arms on hinges so you could adjust them to whatever space, and fold them up out of the way too.

The best solution I have found is a towel rack from West Elm that is essentially just a short ladder that you balance against your wall. I think that will work well for getting these "not clean, but not dirty" clothes off my floor,, but it does not parallel the thoughtfulness and function of this chair. Very creative. I love making/building things like this that you will never find in a store. So cool.

This turned out way better than I thought in the beginning of the video. I was like: sure, you can make it work when you throw your trousers and sweater on it, but nothing more, so it doesn't make sense if you are going to wear these the next day. But then I saw how well it works with the amount of clothing you put on the rail. It's great. If I had space for another chair, I would definitely want to buy it. Design-wise, I would go with the legs splaying out at a slight angle and the same for the clothes rail supports, but it's nice that the way you made them both vertical, they still correspond with each other in that sense. Well done

Then hand it off to the sample frame builder and once he's done it goes to the sample Upholsterer. Once were all finished and management and the customer are happy the patterns created throughout the process are used to do our bespoke production runs... it's not really glamorous but it's very interesting at times. It's always neat to see how someone else's thought process works, nice chair by the way... I have never felt more seen lol I would 1000% buy that chair for hundreds of dollars. I showed my fiance the video and at first he was like "Mmmmm idk..." and I showed him the final product and he said "Okay it's actually pretty good. I'd get that chair." We aren't just a "half-used clothes chair" household. We're a "half-used clothes chair + piles in multiple areas in multiple rooms" household 😩 100% if you put this on pre-order sales or something to see if people want it, I will buy this chair

I'm disabled and I typically leave the house for 2-4 hrs at a time for doctor's appointments. I'm not wearing a shirt for 2 hrs and washing it. It still smells like detergent! But I live with multiple cats, so I have inside clothes and outside clothes. Also, the intro was the most relatable thing ever, from the existence of "the chair" to building a "messy" prototype, and not spending too much time on the perfectionism. (I went to school for art, and mock-ups still haunt my nightmares.)

I too have a clothing pile that could very much make use of a chair like this, but odds are it would use the hanging rail, the seat and the back rest.

My wife and I have a 'chair' like that. It's my old office gaming chair. It does the job well enough but it's an office gaming chair. I don't sit in it anymore. It is full of clothes on its backrest and is tucked under an old desk. Our bedroom has the room for your working prototype you just made in this video. I'd buy this now if you had it on your site. Thanks for the content, as always.

There was a piece of accessory-furniture called a *Valet,* named after the position that a wealthy man would employ for helping him dress, for handling clothing in just this scenario. It was definitely a function-determines-form design though, not meant to look like a chair but capable of being used as a seat when putting on one's socks and shoes. It's meant to hold the trousers draped over a horizontal dowel, with a hangar-like top for the jacket to hang on. Often there's enough depth that clothing doesn't fold-over and sit against other clothing, so that it can all air-out while it sits. I've been using hooks installed on the backside of the closet door with hangars, but we have a walk-in closet so the door can handle the weight. I've thought about buying or building a valet but the way the bedroom is laid-out I'd have to change the rest of the room for it to fit, and I'm not prepared to do that just yet.
@bradys2742Ай бұрын
My wife and I each have a valet. Both are small profile lightweight pieces found at thrift stores. One of their advantages is that when there are enough clothes piled on, they fall into the center of the room, signaling the start of laundry day.😂
@nimue325Ай бұрын
Love a valet chair! (The chair in this video is also wonderful.) The official line is that you put clean clothes on it but let’s be realistic: it has a built in clothes hanger. My grandfather never took his clean clothes off of a hanger and rehung it onto that other hanger for five minutes. Nor did my grandmother put anything there (she would lay out his clothes for him because like all mid century men, he could not choose his own clothing). Clean clothes went on the end of the bed. The valet was used for hanging up worn clothes so they could air out and be worn again.

lol, after using my chairdrobe for years I now have a rule that I’m not allowed to use it any more because I’ve declared war on clutter in my home space. 😅 sometimes it still becomes a big pile of laundry briefly buuut it’s no longer non-functional and I can actually sit and read in my room instead of using my bed for all things chill again. This is inspirational! I love how you encouraged yourself with an elegant solution instead of more rules. :) Peace out

And also you don't wrinkle any bits because you don't sit on the clothes at all. I also hate if they are on the back and I stand up and knock the clothes to the floor... and find them hours later as a floor pile.

I love that corner of "Things I made!" It's a great chair and you should be proud of it! I wouldn't buy it as a product though I'm afraid. Chairs are too space dependant and you'd need to make so many variants to match the vibe of the space I was putting them in that it wouldn't be worth the effort of making it. You should patent the concept though, as a more general idea. For bragging rights mostly.
@Rose3V21 күн бұрын
I have a designated basket in my closet for lightly used clothing that I intentionally made space for this exact purpose. The only downside is if the clothing item wrinkles easily then the basket concept doesn’t help. I’d have to end up steaming the garment before wearing it….but I also designated a small hanging space alongside the basket and then problem solved 😊
@Stuck_on_pauseАй бұрын
Now if you could just make a clip-on attachment to convert the rail that swings round into a small desk/workspace area (think school desk but lazy-susan style), you could also use it as a small workspace for your laptop or something. It's so versatile! Especially for people who live in tiny spaces and don't have room for hanging laundry (or a workspace with the attachment I suggested! 😉)

That chair is a wonderful concept for so many of us ADHD folks. May not be what I go with, but it gets me thinking about where my half-dirty clothes should live. But I'd like to take a moment to talk about that clothes rod. I've never seen one with grooves so that hangers are spaces perfectly evenly apart. It really makes the whole scene. If anyone knows where to buy them, let me know. Otherwise, the best idea I can come up with is to turn them in 4 foot sections on a lathe. That will be my next project.

What a beautiful yet so functional chair! If my bed room was big enough I'd buy one! Also, I've had a Henson razor for about 3 years. Absolutely love it. I used to spend an absurd amount on shaving products. Then I saw an ad on Instagram for their product, showed my dad. We were both impressed. Immediately bought 2 and 2 packs of blades. The blades were 100 for $12 CAD. I haven't even gone through my first box of blades yet. Yes the cost of the razor is more than most want to spend, but it's forever.

I have something in my bedroom you could copy. I hang my slightly dirty clothes on it, my clean outfit for tomorrow, a couple of jackets for the current season, my robe, when I take clothes out of the dryer and plan to hang them in the closet, and I need a temporary place to hang them until I can get them on the hangers, they go on there. There is a place at the top for a couple hats and gloves. It was my grandparents antique hall tree. It's very versatile and I couldn't live without it. You can make them with as many hooks as you want and put some at the halfway mark to hang shorter things like an umbrella. 😊

I won't lie, this is such a fun watch. I'm in my studio barn, supposed to be doing my own work and yet I'm drawn to watching this to completion! That initial 3 circles shot was modern furniture bliss! The un-functionality of a vertical backrest was peak modern. Changing to an angled backrest was the best choice though for actual comfort. Ok, take a page from The New Yankee Workshop & Blacktail Studio and create plans to sell for building a Clothes Chair by Simone Giertz. Possibly also consider selling a parts kit that has the hardware required.

@@alexsawyer2060 My current operating theory is that Big Chair’s current obsession with Mid-Century Modern is purely profit motivated. By continuing to make the backrests and feet lower and lower Big Chair can sell us less chair for the same amount of money. I yearn for quality Wingback yet Big Chair is only interested in giving me small chair for big chair money and I’m glad to march arm in arm with you in demanding Big Chair free us from the shackles of small chair with Big Chair big chair. Also ever since my thirties my back isn’t so good and I make the noise…

That's an effin' brilliant idea, and a great first prototype. Now for the refinements for aesthetics (minor) and manufacturability with the goal of being able to flatpack the product (totally doable). So...type to move from CAD (cardboard aided design) to real CAD and CAM. With coathingers, this new not-too-dirty laundry chair and coordinating basket, you're building out a very nice product suite that you'll have absolutely zero problem selling. Well done, as usual.
